j. < ' x; ■ ' F • BITS AND PIECES Among a few bits and pieces of happenings we would like to pass on to you include: School Board Election — The time for filing to run for the John Glenn School Board of Trustees is winding down and will close at 12:00 noon on Friday, February 21. An open seat in each of the four townships will need to be filled and to this date we have unofficially been informed of four people filing to run. Those whose terms expire are David Hostetler, in Polk Township; Donald Ludwig, Lincoln Township; Jean Ann Beem, Johnson Township; and Mary Kay (Stedman) Millar, Liberty Township. As filing can be done in any of the three counties and there is no direct line to know who has filed until the deadline is here, we know of just four who have filed at this date. They are Robby Keck, Polk Township; John McGee, Lincoln Township; Shirley Anderson, Johnson Township; and Tom Bradford, Liberty Township. There is expected to be several more filings before the deadline and a complete list of candidates will be released once the filing is final. Mike Tyson Trial — The recent trial that has found the former heavyweight champion of the world guilty of rape, is not really a surprise and a decision that not only made news at the time, but will have ramifications for some time to come, still is somewhat of a shocker to many. Being found guilty was deserved according to jurors on the evidence provided and rightly so. But still, should the young black beauty contestant be made a heroine for standing up to a famous person or is there more to this than the final verdict reveals? She was in her own way, guilty of some actions, whether it be intentional or not. Maybe the old question used so much in lighter situations be asked: “What’s a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?” Seems like many of her actions were to say the least, in very bad taste and judgement. Downtown Project Grant — The additional $30,000 the Town of Walkerton has received on their Downtown Grant will be used in some manner to further the project that has led to new sidewalks, trees, etc., in the business district. We hope good use can be made of this in a common sense approach. It still raises a question in our minds as to what kind of planning made the corner of Roosevelt Road and Michigan Street (as well as the other corners) harder for traffic, especially the trucks that must use these routes, to maneuver. It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to tell that such corners as this are bad enough without adding to the woes by further restricting the ability of such vehicles to turn safely. After all, isn’t safety as important as appearance in a situation such as this? Big Games — In the athletic world, you always hear a few times a year about “the big game”. Well, all kidding aside, this weekend has a couple of “big games” for the John Glenn Falcons as they hit the real meat of the schedule in a couple of consecutive nights. A win Friday will again give them at least a share of the Northern State Conference title as they visit LaVille. Then on Saturday, even though it is not the sectional or any title is on the line, the Glenn and Plymouth game has to be considered a biggy. Confidence, bragging rights and a lot of momentum will be on the side of the winner in this contest which has recently grown into a real rivalry. At any rate, it should be kept in proper perspective as this is still just a game ana sportsmansnip ana teilowship should always prevail.
fJf^EMEMBER^^ 1987 Urey Middle School conducted a contest for the yearbook cover design with Dawn Hinchy, eighth grader, winning. There were 24 entries submitted by students. Three of the best designs created by Kenny Stafford, sixth grader; Patti Christensen, eighth grader; and Dawn Hinchy, were among the finalists. The John Glenn High School Basketball Homecoming will be held this Friday, February 13. Candidates for the King and Queen of Homecoming include candidates Carmen Driscoll, Tricia ZeUers, Mindy Salyer, Amy Kaser, Tammy Osborn, Angie Miller, Lowell Tayler, Jeff Roberts, Eric Pentecost, Rick Dillon, Rick Hummer, Mike Traub and Brett Schultz. The GFWC Women’s Club of Walkerton met Friday, February 6, at 1:00 p.m. with 30 members present. Margaret Moravek, president, opened the meeting with the thought “Look For Beauty In Artsand Crafts.” 1902 The John Glenn girls carried the newly found momentum right on through the final game of the 1982
Sectional Saturday night as they followed their upset of favored New Prairie with another exciting win, a 35-29 decision over host LaVille. The LaVille team had beaten the Glenn girls twice in the past three weeks in both the Bi-County Tourney and regular season of play. The John Glenn basketball homecoming was held last week with the following being named as King and Queen candidates, Alison Keiser, Jody Vicsik, Roxanne Fisher, Kim Perkins, Dawn Swihart, Jeff O’Connor, Don Workman, Roy Kaser, Juan Fontanes and Dan South. The new king was Jeff O’Connor and the Queen is Jody Vicsik. 1972 The John Glenn Falcons, winners of two tournies already this year, were the victims of a "hard draw” in the 1972 Sectional to be held at LaVille starting Tuesday evening. The Falcons will meet Plymouth, a team who has been a power the past few years and winners of the two previous sectional titles, but a rebuilding squad this year that has had their ups and downs. North Liberty will meet the Bremen Lions on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Also at 8:30 Argos and Jackson will meet. The Falcons will play on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
The Indian Guides were recently formed in the North Liberty area with the organization to promote companionship of fathers and sons and is sponsored by the YMCA for boys six years and over. No members are allowed to join without their father joining also. Their slogan is "Pals Forever." "Flight to the World of Fashion" is the theme for the annual style show sponsored by Epsilon Chi Chapter of Tri Kappa, Walkerton. Fashions will be shown by Lilly’s, of LaPorte, on March 16 at the John Glenn High School auditorium beginning at 8:00 p.m. The PLJ School Corporation made a fine showing at the music contest held on January 29 with 54 gold medals earned by students in the system. 1952 A total of $971.61 has been collected for the Walkerton-Lincoln Township March of Dimes. Contributions may still be made. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Fraser were in Waukegan, Illinois, over the weekend and enroute home they stopped to have a bite to eat and came out of the restaurant to find their car had been stolen. The sheriff was called on the case and their car was found on Monday unharmed, but out of gas. The vehicle was left along the roadside at Fort Sheridan, just north of Chicago. Fire did considerable damage to the stage and properties of the North Liberty High School building early Tuesday morning. The fire was discovered by William Whitinger, janitor, around 5:30. City mail delivery services for Walkerton has been granted according to information received by Postmaster Arthur E. Shirley this week. The service will start about April first. President Truman will greet 12 outstanding Boy Scouts in the White House during Boy Scout Week, February 6 to 12, marking the 42nd anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. 1942 The Independent-News Co. announces with pleasure the arrangements have been completed for their annual Cooking School to be conducted by Miss Mary Howen, noted lecturer and home economist of the Spry Research Kitchens, Cambridge, Mass. Her feature event will be held March 2 and 3 at the high school in Walkerton. Rural mail service will be established to the residents of West York just as soon as the new regulations set up by the Second Assistant Postmaster are complied with. The first of four dormitories to house women workers at the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant was opened for occupancy on Wednesday. Two units will be ready by this weekend and the remaining two will be completed within two weeks. 1937 A new sewer one block long, extending from 6th to 7th Street, Walkerton, along the alley between Avenues B and C was started last week as a WPA project. The sewer will have seven outlets at the present time, besides three catch basins to serve the town. The project was started on the petition of interested property owners who will be benefited by its construction. According to WPA officials, the cost of the project will be $2,175.00, of which $1,890.00 is represented by labor. The schedule calls for 10 laborers, one time keeper, one first aid man, one truck, one pipe layer and one foreman. Ora Hostetler has been put in charge of the work. “Pick Tlm Beat Caadktote” To the taxpayers of the John Glenn School Corp. It’s time again to pick the best candidate. Why should the taxpayer have to pay the bill the school board made from
unwise decisions? Let the taxpayers elect someone who pays more than the present board pays (six board members average about $1,100.00 a piece, one paid zero or nothing). What I’m trying to say the amount of taxes a farmer has to pay would try to get everything possible out of the tax dollars. They should fine tune it just like you would a race car. The present tax structure is very unfair, why should the major taxpayer have to be burdened with rising taxes when you don't have anybody representing. It cost $29.00 per student so don’t you think the tax structure for the taxpayer is unfair. I think the parents that have kids should have to face up and pay. Instead of sponging off of the taxpayers. The present school board have seventeen (17) students attending John Glenn School Corp, and they are paying for a little over two and a half (2*4) students. What about the other fifteen (15) students? This is another food for thought item the next time you drive through the country cast your eyes on the farm buildings and see what a terrible situation they are in, its because he is taxed to death, there is nothing left after taxes to repair and keep things up, the farmer can’t build another building, like you birds do on the schools, just blown it away, tax the people to death. You fellows on the other hand don’t stop to think the farmer makes it possible for you to eat three (3) times a day of course, maybe you don't need him, you get yours from the super market. Ed Dolph A Polk Twp. Taxpayer “ItStfflb” About two weeks ago, we received a strange call, asking Roy to be the guest speaker at the Blue and Gold dinner. Roy asked me to help him and I said sure. I would go and eat. We went, did that dinner bring up old memories. About twentyfour years ago, our son, Greg, brought home an announcement that there was going to be a roundup for Cub Scouts and that he
KISSING TRIVIA
Kissing is having a heyday! The artful peck on the cheek is far from limited to babybussing politicians—everybody’s doing it! Thus, as romantic spring and summer advance, the lip care experts at Blistex Inc. in Oak Brook, 111., offer these “trivial” insights into the time-honored pursuit of kissing: Medical terminologists have defined kissing as "The anatomical juxtaposition of two orbicularis oris muscles in the state of attraction " Ann Landers, advisor to the lovelorn, says, "Kissing is an expression of affection that gets people so close together that they can’t see anything wrong with each other " Perhaps the reason kissing is so pleasurable is the fact that our lips are generously provided with nerve endings But no kiss is enjoyable if your lips are rough, dry and chapped “Lip skin is different from other skin because it consists of delicate mucous membrane which requires special care as you face the elements,” explains Charles Zugerman. M.D., assistant professor of dermatology. Northwestern University Medical School, and consultant to Blistex Inc “Proper lip care is far from trivial, of course,” he adds. If you are exposed to sun, wind, and cold or if you are prone to dryness, it’s wise to apply—and reapply—a medicated lip care product from Blistex, whether you prefer ointment in a tube or balm in a stick or small jar For lips that are smooth, moist and healthy will always be “pur-
wanted to go and take a parent. Having been a Girl Scout, I thought great! Little did I realize that for the next many years, I would be totally committed to this organization. That night, Sally Keeling and Nedra said that they would be Den Leaders. Many of those who signed up that night became very good friends. Hoppy and Maryin Hochstetler, the John McGoverns, Conrad Kriskovsky, and many more. Ask Doc and Jo Hershberger about the night Paul got dunked in the apple dunking tank. The many family campouts and doings at the Stuntz and Hochstetler Christmas Tree Farm were part of a growing time of our lives. The rest is history, Roy eventually became Scout Master of Troop 293, serving even after his son had left home. He turned it over to a person who wasn’t quite as committed to Scouting. Hopefully the Webioes and their parents will continue the Troop. The group of Scouts in the area were formerly sponsored by the Lions, who have since disbanned in the area. The present group is parent sponsored and I’m sure any financial or physical help would be appreciated. We had a nice dinner and Roy g«ve his talk. We had a very nice evening. Thank you Cub Master Swan and your merry bunch of leaders for the lovely walk down memory lane. Don’t forget to take your sweetheart out for pancakes and sausages, Sunday, February 16, at St. Pat’s. Happy Valentines' day to you all.
