HAZ-MAT Team Removes Chemical Vials Last Week South Bend Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Response team was called by the Walkerton Police Dept., on Tuesday, Feb. 4, to the local station to remove cemical vials that were taken to the station by an unknown citizen. Several vials containing a mixture of tear gas, chloropicrin and methyl chloride bromide were taken to the police department about 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The vials were found in a 1920's era safe and the unidentified person asked the police to dispose of them according to Capt. Cari Sobieralski. Sobieralski contacted county police for advise and found that the chemical mixture was considered a hazardous material. The Haz-Mat team placed the vials in an air tight container and taken to the county police firing range where they were destroyed. The vials, about two inches in diameter and about six inches long, were commonly installed in an old safe as a theft deterrent. While the local police department was evacuated and the street in front dosed off to traffic all calls were routed to the county police dispatch center in South Bend. The chemical compounds that make up tear gas are described as extremely irritating to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Though not generally considered life threatening, large quantities of the material can be fatal. Downtown Grant Increased $30,000 In Walkerton The Indiana Department of Commerce has announced that Downtown Walkerton will be receiving an additional $30,000 of Community Development Block Grant money for downtown improvements, according to David Behr, Executive Director of the Walkerton Industrial Fund and Walkerton Redevelopment Commission. Walkerton received a $150,800 State Grant in October of 1990 and has since installed new sidewalks, antique lighting, brick paving, and trees along Roosevelt Road downtown with those funds. However, when bids were opened last July, the Redevelopment Commission discovered the grant money could not stretch far enough to do everything they originally wanted to do. Deleted from the construction plans was a new sidewalk along Michigan Street which would give a necessary pedestrian link between Roosevelt Road stores and the Ist Source Five Star Shopping Center one block away. Additional lighting and park benches also had to be removed from the plans. In September, Behr prepared a request to increase the State Grant budget by $30,000 to complete the downtown project to its original expectations. “We will be working with our architect, Brent Martin, and our general contractor. Larson-Danielson, to quickly determine exactly what additional improvements can be made with our new budget,” said Behr. “We would like to begin construction of those improvements this spring.” Fire Destroys Trent Residence Early Sunday The home of Walter and Marie Trent at U. S. 6 and Sage Road, Walkerton, was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning. Polk Twp.
