NORTH JUDSON FALLS TO GLENN IN 64-50 GAME The John Glenn Falcons invaded North Judson’s gym Friday night for a game with a good Bluejay team. In a battle that was tight all the way, the Falcons once again prevailed late in the game to pull out a 64-59 victory. As is often the case with a Gordon Mosson coached team, free throws down the stretch are a big difference in a lot of games and this was no exception as the Falcons converted eight of 10 freebees in the fourth quarter to pull from a 44-43 lead after three to the five point margin of victory. The win boosted the Glenn overall record to 6-2 while the Bluejays absorbed just their second defeat of the year. The two team were tied at both the first half stops as Kevin Stedman almost single handed kept the Falcons in the game offensively. The score was 14 all after one period and 28-28 at the main intermission. Stedman had 15 first half points, nine in the opening period as no other Falcon had more than four points at halftime. In the second half neither team could gain much of an advantage as they remained just about as tight as could be through the third period when Glenn held a slim 44-43 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Falcons did come forth pushing the ball inside and drawing some big fouls that were much of the deciding factor in the victory. As Glenn was making eight of 10 in this period, the only gave up two free throws to the Jays, both good by Shepherd, their leading scorer for the year and game. Stedman finished the night with 26 points, adding four more in the third period and seven in the final stanza including three of four from the line. B. J. Walls reached double figures with 10 points and the other starters chipped in with 9, 8 and 7 respectively. Shepherd paced the Bluejays with 14 while Gappa had 12 and Cox 11 for the Starke County team. North Judson remained undefeated at 9 and 0 while defeating Glenn 58 to 44. The Falcons connected on more field goals yet were outscored by 16 at the free throw line. Judson sank 21 of 23 attempts holding off a second half charge by the visitors. Matt Elmore was the leader of Glenn’s attempted comeback collecting 12 points, 6 rebounds and three assists. Randy Winkelman and Russell Burch contributed six points each in the second half rally to help the Falcons close to within 10 points with plenty of time remaining. It was
this second half however, that Judson was putting on their free throw clinic, hitting 19 of 21 attempts to hold off the Falcons. Against Triton, the Falcons twice gained lead advantage of eight points only to see the visitors rally and overtake that lead each time themselves. With only a few minutes remaining, Glenn owned a 7 point lead and had possession of the ball. In two trips down the floor, Glenn turned the ball over twice while Triton bombed in a pair of three-pointers. After a travel violation seconds later, Triton took the lead on a lay-up. A free throw and a steal by Russell Burch set up a tie score with less than a half minute remaining. Triton travelled leaving Glenn with a shot to win the game with 10 seconds to play. The ball was inbounded to Ryan Walls who, seeing the primary scorers covered, took it upon himself to drive towards the basket and sink the game winning lay-up. Matt Elmore led the Falcons eagers for the third game in a row with 10 points. Randy Winkelman and Nathan Lichtenberger matched Elmore’s point total for some much needed scoring strength. Congratulations to the junior varsity on two very competitive and exciting ball games leaving their record at 6 wins and 3 defeats. Glenn will play away at Knox January 17 and away at North Wood January 18. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. each night. The loss dropped the Glenn record to 2-11 for the season and 0-6 in Northern State Conference play. Culver in-
creased to 3-10 overall and 1-3 in NSC games. The Glenn girls just had trouble scoring as they only totaled five points in each of the first two quarters and then really went cold in the third hitting only 1 out of 14 shots. Culver led 13-15 after one and 21-10 at halftime. The last quarter was a free scoring one with the host team outscoring the Lady Falcons 24-21 to make the final score 52-35. For the winners good balance sparked their attack as only Wilson, with 12 points, hit double figures. Glenn was led by Ruby with 11, put the rest of the Falcons couldn’t match the balanced scoring of Culver. B-Team Wins Bth Game The Glenn B-Team won their eighth game of the season against five loses as they topped the Culver reserves 31-6. MANY UNSAFE TOYS GET TO THE MARKET Many toys and other children’s articles, all unsafe, were recalled from the marketplace during the Christmas shopping period. There was a total of 10.8 million units, say* the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Included were infant pacifiers and similar products. These toys and articles failed to measure up to the safety standards of CPSC. The Commission’s objective is to achieve the same level of safety awareness with other products that many people now have with toys. The 17 radio stations, one television station and five daily newspapers in Iraq are all governmentoperated.
