Free Pamphlet on Walking

A new free pamphlet from the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) repons that walking can help you: •Strengthen your heart and lungs and improve circulation. •Prevent heart attacks and strokes. •Reduce obesity and high blood pressure. •Boost your metabolic rate. •Favorably alter your cholesterol. •Improve muscle tone in your legs and abdomen. •Reduce stress and tension. •Reduce arthritis pain; stop bone deterioration. Just about any time of year is a good time to start a regular walking program, experts agree. About 67 million men and women are already walking regularly. If you'd like to join them, first be sure your feet are healthy and that you have the right kind of walking shoes, advise the experts at APMA. Choose a good quality, lightweight walking shoe with breathable upper materials, such as leather or nylon mesh. The heel counter should be firm; the heel should be positioned closer to the ground for walking stability The front or forefoot area of the shoe should have adequate support and flexibility. Go to a

RETIRING SOON? FIND OUT ABOUT SOCIAL SECURITY NOW If you're thinking about signing up for Social Security sometime in

1992, you should get in touch with Social Security now about your plans. You and your family may be due benefits for months you are still working. But to get those benefits, you must file your application early. It may be to your advantage to have your Social Security benefits start in January, even if you don’t plan to retire until later in the year. Under current rules that affect how much a beneficiary can earn, called the Social Security "retirement test," many people can receive more benefits with an application that is effective in January. A 1990 legislative change that eliminated retroactivity in most retirement claims, increased the importance of contacting Social Security before retiring. The rules are complicated, so the Social Security Administration urges prospective retirees to find out in advance if choosing to start their benefits in January would be advantageous. Retirement claims that go into effect in January can be filed any time now through January 31. To set up an appointment to file an application for retirement benefits, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. weekdays. The best times to call are early or late in the day.
