INDIANA RESIDENTS DUE FEDERAL TAX REFUND CHECKS The IRS is trying to locate Hoosier taxpayers who are still due tax refunds from their 1990 Federal income tax returns. William Jacobs, IRS District Director for Indiana, said 590 refund checks were returned by the Postal Service as undeliverable. "The refund checks total over $205,586 and range in amounts from $1 to $12,873," Jacobs said. Internal Revenue Service believes most of these taxpayers moved or changed their last names during the year, and failed to notify the Postal Service or IRS. When a refund is returned by the Postal Service, the IRS attempts to locate the taxpayer by follow-up mail "but there is always a small number who cannot be found," Jacobs said. Most taxpayers, over 1.7 million in Indiana, have already received their refunds, he said. If you are due a refund from your 1990 tax return but have not yet received it, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 (in the Indianapolis area, 226-5477) for information. Glenn Girls Face Pair Os Tough Road Games The Lady Falcons of John Glenn high school return to action next week following the holiday layoff with a pair of tough road tests. The Falcons travel to Rochester on Tuesday night to battle the 9-2 Zebras and then the following night are entertained by Northern State Conference power Triton, winners of 12 of 13 contests overall and 3 of 4 in league play. The Falcons experienced a rough schedule prior to Christmas and it appears things will not be getting any easier on the down side of the ledger. First year coach Scott Hostetler believes it may take a little more time for his young and inexperienced chargers to gel and get on the winning track. There are no short cuts, and there still will be pain involved. After a 2-8 start, it may be that the time and the pain are going to be greater than anticipated. Working with only two players with any varsity experience and facing a wicked schedule, the Falcons got off to a 1-1 start. They lost to NSF leader Knox in their opener and edged South Bend Riley in their second encounter. They then dropped tilts to perennial toughies Mishawaka, Bremen and Plymouth before losing starter Jenny Oke for the season with a knee injury. Oke and senior Michele knepp are the only eagers who returned from last year with any varsity playing time to speak of. The next five games saw the locals play against all types of adversity. The Falcons dipped Oregon-Davis to improve their record to 2-4. But then the Falcons were saddled with sickness and injuries. The Jimtown game saw Knepp sidelined with the flu as well as a couple of others playing under the weather. Against a very good South Bend Gay quintet, Knepp and Jonna Johnson were still recovering from the bug and Katrina Hill was out nursing an ankle injury. In the South Centra] and New Prairie games the local gals were nearly at full strength with only Hill hampered with her injury. Even so, the Falcons have made great strides in improving their overall play. They have had to learn an entirely new offensive and defensive system, which always takes time even with seasoned players. This coupled with their inexperienced, injuries and illnesses have definitely slowed their progress. Coach Hostetler is impressed with his squad’s work ethics and attitude. His team is quickly being noted for their never say die attitude and their aggressive style of play at both ends of the court. The Glenn mentor hopes his girls will be ready by sectional tournament time to give more than just a good account of themselves. With everyone but two players back from the varsity plus a young and improving junior varsity dub returning next year, the future definitely appears bright for girls basketball at John Glenn high school.
