WELCOME BACK STARKE CO. This Sunday, October 27, the last Sunday in October, is the day that most of the nation sets their clocks back after observing almost seven months of Daylight Savings Time. Here in Indiana, the most of the state does not change but remains on Eastern Standard Time the entire 12 months of the year. A handful of counties in a couple of corners of the state are the exception and for many years the dividing line has been on one plus sides of St. Joseph County as LaPorte and Starke County both were included in the group that switched twice a year. This year Starke County is going to stay with the rest of the state instead of the other five counties in the corner of the county near the Chicagoland area. This will be much more convenient for our immediate area, and in all probability, after they get used to it a little, almost all of Starke County will agree. This is especially true in our area where the Koontz Lake community each year is split as the larger portion of the lake lies in Starke County, but the east end is in Marshall County. Add to this, more ties in this area are to Walkerton and Plymouth than to Knox and LaPorte. The Department of Transportation has allowed this change to be made and it might even lead to more changes in future years. It gets to be a touchy subject one way or the other when you are a borderline area, especially one that does have definite ties in both time zones. But for all of us and now the Starke County people as well, the change of time will have its annual effect on us, mainly the changing of times of television programs which does play a more important part in our lives than many people would like to admit. For five months and about one week, we will be on the same time with New York and the Eastern Time zone for programming instead of with Chicago and the Central Time zone. It boils down to prime time, network news, etc., all being one hour later on our clocks and local programming also changes accordingly to match up with network times. Maybe, just maybe, someday, somehow, Indiana will all be on the same time . . . but don’t hold your breath waiting for this to happen as ties on the opposite sides of the state are strong in many ways and means so much to those local areas. We can’t fault those people and it is just something we can easily learn to live with. At any rate, welcome back to our time, Starke County. We think you will like what you will have for the next six plus months.
