GEORGE M. HERSHBERGER George M. Hershberger, 86, of 119 Grissom Drive, Walkerton,
passed away at 11:55 p.m., on Thursday, October 10, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, after an illness. He was bom on Sept. 27, 1905, in Garrett and lived in Walkerton since 1935, coming from Bremen. He married Irene V. Starner, on May 10, 1933, in Garrett who preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1972. He married Carrol Lonn on September 10. 1975, who preceded him in death on March 10, 1987. He was owner of Hershberger’s Five and Dime Stores in Walkerton, Bremen and North Liberty. Surviving are two daughters, Shirley A. Hazel, of Walkerton and Janice Berrier, of Lakeville; a son. Dr. G.R. Hershberger, of Walkerton; 10 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral Home, with Rev. Marilyn Gebert, officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton. He was a 1928 graduate of DePaul University; past master of Walkerton Masonic Lodge 619 F & AM; past patron of Walkerton Chapter 319 Order of the Eastern Star; a member of Scottish Rite Valley, South Bend and Orak Shrine Temple, Michigan City. He was a 33rd degree mason, receiving this honor in 1970 in Milwaukee. He also served as a justice of the peace. Memorial contributions may be made to the Walkerton Masonic Lodge building fund or the Indiana Masonic Home, Franklin. MARYE. SPRINGMAN Mary Elizabeth (Newcomer) Springman, 81. of Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, formerly of North Liberty, passed away at 6:20 a.m., on Saturday in the nursing home after an illness. She was bom on May 29, 1910, in North Liberty and was a lifelong area resident. As Mary Newcomer she married Charles Irving Springman on December 10, 1927, in North Liberty. He preceded her in death in 1987. Surviving are a daughter, Jov Fraki, of Pine Island, Minn.; three sons, Charles Dallas and William Frank, both of North Liberty and Donald Gene, of South Bend; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grand-children; a great-great-grandchild and a sister, Eva Ross, of North Liberty. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, of which she was a member, with Rev. Bert Pauluhn, pastor, officiating. Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery, North Liberty. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 290, North Liberty and the Lutheran Church Women. Memorial contributions may be made to the church memorial fund. Arrangements were handled by the A.M. Manuel Funeral Home, North Liberty. LARRY W. HECK Larry W. Heck, 47, of Starke County Road 1050 East, Koontz Lake, passed away at 8:10 a.m., on Sunday, October 13, in Holy Cross Parkview Hospital, Plymouth of an apparent heart attack. He was boro on August 27, 1944, in Plymouth and was a lifelong area resident. He worked at Hi-De-Ho Truck Stop, Gro vertown. He married Rosedella Weldon on Sept. 4, 1965, at Koontz Lake, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Cynthia, at home; six sons, Tommy, of Nappanee, Roger, Randall, Bruce, Larry and Shawn, all at home; his mother and stepfather, Georgia and Bruno Simmer, of Grovertown; two sisters, Patricia Whitesell, of Grovertown and Delores Miller, of Culver; a brother, Harry, of Grovertown; a stepsister. Linda Awald, of North Liberty; and a stepbrother, Bruno A. Simmer, of Grovertown. Services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Ranneils Funeral Home with burial at Grovertown Cemetery. Walkerton Mrs. Vi Masterman returned home on Saturday after spending two and a half weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Rex Masterman and family, in Plano, Texas. On Saturday evening the usual pot luck dinner will be held at the Koontz Lake Conservation Gub. Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. McKesson, of Austin, Texas, are in town for a few days visiting with his sister, Mildred McKesson and friends. HOMEMAKERS MEET The October meeting of the Oregon Davis Homemakers Gub gathered at the Koontz Lake Conservation clubhouse.

Halloween pumpkins, witches, ghosts and black cats decorated the tables. Hostesses were Ann Labno and Lou Dipert who served cakes, coffee, tea and candy to the 16 members present. Lou Dipert gave the devotions, "Nobody Knows’’ by Patience Strang. A letter from St. Dominic's Church was read thanking the club for the contribution of food for the pantry. Gen England read an article about the origin of the T-shirt. Happy birthday was sung to Connie Chojmaclo and Josephine Gantier. Cards were played after the meeting adjourned. Four U.S. State capitals are named after presidents: Jackson, Mississippi; Lincoln, Nebraska; Jefferson City, Missouri; Madison, Wisconsin.
