A FULL TIME JOB The celebration of Fire Prevention Week is a very good project, especially with the instruction and educating aimed at youngsters. It can never be too early for learning minds to understand about fire prevention and the seriousness of fires. Preventing a fire can not only mean the saving of structures, money, etc., more importantly it can mean the saving of human lives. However, fire prevention is more than a one week a year matter. And it is also more than a project aimed at the young people. Fire prevention must be a full time job and one that young and old alike should be aware of at all times. There is no doubt more fires are caused by careless adults by far than by youngsters who simply do not know better. Adults have a great ability for carelessness, lack of concentration, a shortcut to get something done, or taking that chance they know should not be taken. Add to this the numerous other ways fires can be started and you have something everyone must be aware of and help stop. We want to salute all the firemen everywhere, but especially the volunteer firemen of our nation’s many small communities where a paid fire department is not possible. It takes a special kind of person and a special kind of dedication all the time to sene in this capacity. We will never know what the consequences would be if we did not have these public servants who perform such an important deed for all of us. Keep up the good work firemen, everywhere. “REMONSTRANCE” MEETING The group calling themselves Taxpayers For Education, who have been quite active in recent months in the John Glenn School Corporation, have scheduled a meeting to be held next week on the “remonstrance process’’. This is in regards to the legal way to oppose the proposed new middle school building program by the John Glenn School Corporation Board of Trustees. It must be noted at once, these people are aware of a need, they are aware of the problems that exist, but they are also aware of the fact that other avenues can be followed to relieve the present problem. This is their goal, not to just oppose completely what is being done. The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 17, at 7:00 p.m. in the North Liberty Community Building. The purpose is to explain the remonstrance process and basically find out if there is enough support to continue their battle to stop the plans that are now being pursued. The group is hoping for a good turnout and explains this will be the chance to express their side of the story. The recent 1028 hearing held by the school corporation, presented that side of the story with time for citizen input, but was a hearing that had to be held by law and operated under the legal guidelines. Now the Taxpayers For Education want to inform the public of the legal process available and find out if support is there to continue. This is an important meeting for these people and for all taxpayers of the school corporation. Remember, Thursday, October 17, 7:00 p.m. in the North Liberty Community Building.

“Thank Ym" On Thursday October 3rd, we had just sit down to eat when the dreaded “tones” went off. Being the wife of a fireman 1 realize that nothing else matters to these guys, their number 1 priority is getting to the fire station. Normally I don't go to a fire scene, but when finding out it was the drugstore I went, worried about losing yet another building downtown to a fire, especially after the town has worked so hard and has done such a wonderful job with the downtown development. 1 immediately started scanning the scene trying to look for my husband. Was he up on the roof or crawling inside the burning, smoking building? 1 heard comments around me on how stupid they thought it was for the fireman to try to break down a steel door instead of just going thru the front door or even breaking a window. These firemen continually have training meetings every month. They are well trained on how to survey a situation once they get to the scene, and to tackle the fire in the best possible way in order to minimize any fire damage. They don't want to add any more fuel (oxygen)
to the fire than they have to. To the person that wanted to throw a pumpkin thru the window to help the firemen into the building, thank God you didn’t, the building might not still be standing today. Three and a half hours after the first “tones” went out my husband finally came home, dirty; smelly; tired; and hungry. I was just grateful he was safe. Yet there was still firemen standing by the scene making sure the fire didn’t rekindle and others were still at the station taking care of the hoses and other equipment. Who knows when they finally got to go home? But yet they never complain and are always ready to go back out again at any time day or night. To the Walkerton fire department I just wanted to say "Thank You” for all your dedication and hard work. Also to the Walkerton ambulance crew a special thank you for always being there to stand by in case our husbands and sons need your assistance. Because of these two groups of individuals I believe Walkerton truly has great reasons to be proud! Deanna Viche P.S. Honey, the next time do you think you could sleep outside to air out? “BMtFriMMT' On Sept. 26, 1991 a light went out in Phoenix. You know that light as Charlene Cripe Manns.
To you she was a local girl trying hard to raise her three children on her own. Because of her health she left her hometown and came to mine. Its hard to explain the impact Charlie had on people here. To so many different people she was so many different things. To me she was "best friend.” Someone I could laugh with or on occasion cry with. We often good naturedly even argued. We were so alike, yet so different. I was the dreamer flying high in the sky. She was my anchor keeping me attached to the earth. Once in a while we'd trade places. Oh, the adventures we shared. To my children and all the children around her she was a "second mom.” Someone they could always turn to and know she’d always be there. She didn't always say what they wanted to hear, but she always told them the truth and because of that they loved her. To her other friends she was the "keeper of their secrets,” “shoulder to lean on” and at times "sanity restorer.” During my trip from my home in Las Vegas to Phoenix and back I had a lot of time to remember. The memories helped me realize just how special she really was. When it came time to say good-by in the Chapel I had to accept the fact my beloved Charlie was no longer "just a phone call away.” The chapel was packed with equal parts teenagers and adults. You could feel the love they all felt for her. It was something I'll never forget. Charlie and I always ended our phone calls with I love you and miss you. I’ll say it one last time for all of us. We love you Charlie and we will miss you. Estelle V. Teske
