WALKERTON Recent luncheon guests of Mrs. Ethel Fields were her long-time friends, Mrs. Flara Hough and Mrs. Velma Wharton, of North Liberty. They came especially to help Ethel celebrate her birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Roberts have returned to their home in California after visiting and traveling for the past month. Their three grandchildren from Pennsylvania had spent the summer visiting their mother, grandparents and other relatives in California until time to go back to school. The Roberts decided to give them a new experience by traveling on Amtrak so to get sleeping quarters for all five they went from Los Angeles to New Orleans then on to Philadelphia which took several days. Shirley and Dick then came to South Bend by Amrtak and Jean Cole transported them to the home of Shirley's mother. Mrs. Mary Jane Beaty. While here they spent three days in Ohio visiting Mrs. Beaty's sister and several cousins. One happy occasion while here was helping Mr. and Mrs. Bob Cole celebrate their wedding anniversary. The Roberts especially enjoyed renewing friendships and going out with friends of many years. Mrs. Beaty really enjoyed their visit and their doing many little repair jobs for her. Lenard and Deb Northam, Todd and Theresa Jacobson and Ethel Fields spent Labor Day at the country home of the Marvin Whitaker family, in Dyer. Other guests were the Garence Fields family, of Mishawaka, Roger Whitaker, Highland, Barbara Carey, Highland, and son Michael, of Dallas, Texas, who flew in for the occasion. Mike is a practicing attorney in Dallas and the grandson of Mrs. Fields. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mercer, Julie and Bruce, and Mrs. Ruth Ullery, of Walkerton, traveled to Terre Haute last weekend for a volleyball tournament at Indiana State. Playing for the Auburn University team was Shannon Kiracofe, granddaughter of Mrs. Ullery. John and Sharon Kiracofe, of Austin, Texas, parents of Shannon, were also present for the weekend. BARBARA BECKER RECEIVES AWARD Ms. Barbara (Lidy) Becker, of Decatur, Georgia, was presented on June 27 with a special award, the Dr. First Humanitarian Award. Barbara is director of diagnostic imaging at Northlake Regional Medical Center. The First Award exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of Dr. Thomas First, Sr., co-founder of Hospital Corporation of America, who said, "It’s not bricks and mortar and equipment that make a hospital, it is the warmth, compassion and attitude of good employees that leads to quality care. Congratulations to Barbara I UREY VOLLEYBALL NEWS The Urey A teams opened their season at home on September 12 against South Central. The Seventh grade beat South Central 15-12, 6-15 and 17-15. The eighth grade team won in two games 15-2 and 15-7. Both teams served strong and played very good defense. On Monday, September 16, the girls played their second match against Mishawaka Beiger. The 7th grade team lost to Beiger 6-15 and 13-15. Top servers for the team were Cheryl Paschen and Rebecca Hill. The Bth grade team was defeated 2-15, 15-11 and 7-15. Top servers for the team were Lisa Matz and Jessica Platz. The girls play at LaPorte Kesling on Thursday, September 19, at 4:30 p.m. Moss only grows on the North side of trees in open, dry country, not in the forest or on lowlands

LOUISE M. WALDRON Louise M. Waldron, 62, of Route 1, Box 102-A, Walkerton, passed away at 8:10 p.m., on Sunday, September 15, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, South Bend, of an apparent heart attack. She was born on September 15, 1929, in LaPorte and lived in Walkerton most of her life, coming from Chicago. As Louise Paddock she married Philip C. Waldron, Jr., on November 27, 1948, in Walkerton, who survives. She was employed by Action Inc., South Bend as a secretary for 10 years. Also surviving are three daughters, Debra Cormican, of South Bend, Karen Carr, of Fenwick, Mich., and Lana Jennings, of Bremen; a son, Craig, Walkerton; seven grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; and a brother, Jack L. Wallace, of Tipton. A son, Philip L., died in 1949. There will be no service or visitation. Cremation will take place at Riverview Crematory, South Bend. The A. M. Manuel Funeral Home, North Liberty, was in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Walkerton Ambulance Fund. HENRY W. DITTMAR Henry W. Dittmar, 73, of 203 E. Harrison Street, North Liberty, passed away at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, at his home after an illness. He was born on July 6, 1918, in New York City and lived in North Liberty since 1945, coming from New York City. On Feb. 22, 1945, in Naples, Italy, he married Arlene M. Fair, who survives. He retired in 1976 from the U.S. Postal Service. Also surviving are two daughters, Susan E. Pola, of South Bend and Julie E. Shaw, of Douglasville, GA; two sons, Henry W. 11, of North Liberty and Rev. Martin, of Lafayette; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at St. John's Lutheran Church, of which he was a member, with Rev. Bert Pauluhn, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Eastlawn Cemetery, North Liberty. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War and a member of VFW Post 365, North Liberty and the Masonic Lodge #266. The A.M. Manuel Funeral Home, North Liberty, was in charge of the arrangements. JAMES J. KEARNEY, JR. James J. Kearney, Jr., 71, of 72501 State Road 23, Walkerton, passed away at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, at his home. He was born on August 20, 1920, in Chicago. He lived in the area since 1946, coming from Wheatfield, Indiana. On May 26, 1951, he married Peggy M. Davis, in Pocahontas, Arkansas, who survives. He retired as parts managet for the Grovertown Truck Stop. Also surviving are two sons, James J. 111, of Sumpter, South Carolina, and Kenneth, of Aurora, Colorado; six grandchildren; five sisters, Vivian Duttlinger, of Wheatfield, Elaine Jachim, of Grand Junction, Colorado, Sue Pratt, of Hamlet and Dorothy Gine and Patricia Cow ger, both of Walkerton; and a brother, Thomas, of Wheatfield. Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, of which he was a member, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. He was an Army veteran of World War 11. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, Inc. The Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral Home, Walkerton, was in charge of the arrangements. PAULA A. CHAPMAN Paula A. Chapman, 16, of 11080 U.S. 6, Bremen, passed away at 5:40 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, in Memorial Hospital. South Bend, as a result of injuries suffered in an auto accident at U.S. 31
South and Tyler Road, near Lake ville. She was born on August 7, 1975, in Plymouth. She was a freshman at LaVille High Schoo) and a member of the Flag Corps. Surviving are her mother and stepfather, Shirley and Gary Douglas. of Bremen; her father, Arthur Chapman, of Grovertown; two brothers, Arthur, Jr. and Greg, both of Bremen; a stepsister, Carrie Douglas and a stepbrother, Sean Douglas, both of Plymouth; her maternal grandmother, Donna Keyser, of Plymouth; her paternal grandmother, Alice Chapman, of Grovertown; and her maternal great-grandmother, Mildred Tribby, of Walkerton. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel, with burial in the Grovertown Cemetery. CONGREGATIONAL MEETING There will be a Called Congregational Meeting on Sunday, September 22 following Worship Service at the First Presbyterian Church. The purpose of this meeting will be to vote on a candidate that is being presented by the Pastor Nomination Committee as your future pastor. This will be a secret ballot vote, for members only. The candidate is Rev. William Cullen, from Wisconsin. He graduated from McCormick Theological Seminary of Chicago with a masters of Divinity in 1983. The PNC heard Rev. Cullen preach at a neutral pulpit and interviewed him for over three hours. His bible based and meaningful sermons impressed the PNC to ask Rev. Cullen to candidate for this position. Prior to the church services there will be a breakfast served by your PNC to give everyone an opportunity to meet Rev. Cullen. The Get Acquainted Breakfast will be served at 9:30 a.m. We will be introducing Rev. Bill to you at that time. Your PNC has found him to be warm and friendly with a great sense of humor. Rev. Bill comes to us having been the Stated Supply at New Amsterdam Presbyterian Church in Wisconsin. He has had experience as a stated supply, pastor, volunteer in mission and community organizer. As a member of The Presbyterian Church, this is a very important and exciting event in the life of the church. Votes will be tallied and results announced during the meeting. Please be in attendance for this most (important meeting. SERVICE NOTES August 29 (FHTNO — Marine Pvt. Charles E. Ben well, son of Richard W. and Carol A. Ben well, both of 1007 Tyler St., Walkerton, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. During the training cycle, recruits are taught the basics of battlefield survival, introduced to typical military daily routine and personal and professional standards. All recruits participated in an active physical conditioning program and gained proficiency in a variety of military skills including first aid, rifle marksmanship and close-order drill. Teamwork and self-discipline are emphasized throughout the cycle. The 1990 graduate of OregonDavis High School joined the Marine Corps in April 1991.
