VOTER REGISTRATION In recent years the local town elections have generated a 10l of interest and along with this, some changes have come about that changes the way the office holders are selected. For one thing, no longer do the towns of Walkerton and North 1 ibertv elect an entire Town Council at one time. The staggered terms have been with us for a few elections now, this assuring that an entirely new board will not be sealed at one time. In this year’s election, the regular off-year town election year, three of the five council seats will be decided along with the clerk-treasurer, and in Walkerton also the judge of the town court. Another change that has been implemented in recent years is that all persons must be registered to vote in the town elections. At one time this wasn’t the case. However, registering is not a problem or much of an inconvenience for anyone wishing to do so if they act quickly. There are a number of local people who are eligible to register voters locally. However, this must be done by September ’’’’ If not done localh b\ that time, registration must be done in South Bend at the County-City Building. This period of time will also be expiring in the near future, but one does have both of these opportunities to register at this lime. We will focus more on the upcoming elections in future issues as the 1991 town elections draw near. There has been slight precinct changes in Walkerton that will be called to sour attention and of course, in what is now less than seven weeks away, the election itself occurs. If you want to speak your voice tor sour local government, be sure you are registered to vote and now is the lime io take care of that matter. Your interest in sour candidates and your town is a healths factor so don't miss out bs not being eligible to vote on November 5.

“John Glenn School Corporation Patrons’’ I have been asked to respond to a question asked in a Letter to the Editor. The questions was, “Where in the plans are the necessary repairs for the North Liberty Elementary at 5.5 million dollars and the necessary repairs for John Glenn High School?" 1 will try to answer this question to the best of my ability and know - ledge at this time. Three of the six middle school building options considered the use of the North Liberty site. During the construction of a new middle school, the architect gave consideration to a complete renovation of the North Liberty Elementary School. This renovation would not be necessary , but was considered. The estimated cost of this work w as approximately 5.5 million dollars. The School Board chose not to build on this site, selecting Option A-l. an area adjacent to John Glenn High School. Any repairs requested to be done at John Glenn High School could be done during the middle school project or with the Capital Projects plan. At this time, there has not been any School Board decision concerning repairs to John Glenn High School. 1 would encourage any patron who may have questions about the building project to contact the superintendent’s office. I will try to answer any and all questions asked of me. I would request any letter sent to me be signed. The signature of a patron will enable me to respond to that person in an efficient and effective manner. In the future, 1 will not respond to unsigned “Letters to the Editor". Dick Reese Superintendent John Glenn School Corporation “Loyalties" Usually about this time of year the calls start coming asking for donations. This week alone we have received about ten requests by telephone or mail asking us to please give a gift of money for this or that Usually it is an organization operating under a local group’s

name. These are professional fund raisers. When I ask them where they are located, the answer is not locally. Maybe Ohio, Pennsylvania. or elsewhere out of state. I automatically say no! I'm getting quite a reputation with these callers. Now they ask for Mr. Roy Williams, he will listen. Where do our loyalties lie? Surely not out of state where the majority of the money is sent. W'hen I approach my local groups with a good promotional item, 1 am told that they get all their promotional items from these groups. Schools are another user of out of area businesses. When they are in need of money they hit up the local merchants for money, they then spend it in Plymouth or other areas. The local merchants and citizens pay a lot of taxes to support and even build new schools locally. Maybe the administratin should look at spending some of their monies locally! 1 am confused as to my loyalties. Should I help the local organizations who don’t help the local businesses or should I go out of the area and not give a dam about the locals? Maybe this lack of loyalty is why the citizens of the town don’t care about their sidewalks and lawns. The roads and streets are not repaired in front of all the houses in the town and in the county. Maybe the Chamber should promote fix-up all of Walkerton. Maybe a prize for the best kept lawn, the prettiest house color. We need more enthusiasm about our whole town. I know where my loyalties lie and lam proud of Walkerton. I need to get on my soap box and sell Walkerton, but so do all the rest of the people, including the merchants, schools and organizations. That Bill Ellinger sure knows how to roast a pig. If you missed the roast at The Cottage last week, you sure missed on some good eating. Bill, 1 still haven't finished with that horse radish. It sure cleaned out my sinus and all my other parts too! Remember, shop, buy and promote the Walkerton area. To expect loyalty, we must be loyal. Sincerely, Nedra Williams The Amazon is too wide at many points tor a person on one bank to see the opposite shore

SEPTEMBER 28 9:00 a.m., Boy Scouts. Dear Betty Crocker Question: Whenever 1 boil potatoes for mashing, a foam gathers at the top. Does this need to be removed? Mrs. A.C.S., Alma. AR Answer: There's no need to skim the foam if you use the potato water for mashing the potatoes. The foam is starch that cooks out of the potatoes. Amounts vary with potato type and tend to be greater in older potatoes. If the starch has reacted with metal from the pan. foam may discolor. In that case, do remove the foam. Question: I've tried everything to keep oil from foaming when I make meatballs, potato patties and cutlets. What do you suggest to stop this from happening? L.G., Rochester, NY Answer: Vegetable oil becomes less stable and foams easily as it's used repeatedly for frying. In fact, height of the foam is one way to measure how many times oil has been used. You can minimize foaming by using the oil two or three times only. Commercial oils are processed with a tiny amount of anti-foaming agent, methosilibone. but oils available for consumers are not. Do you have a cooking question? Write Dear Betty Crocker, Box 1113, Dept. Betty, Minneapolis, MN 55440 Tip of the week: Keep your kitchen cool and save energy by not pre-heating the broiler. Set the oven control to broil and/or 550 degrees F and, at the same time, place the food on a rack in the broiler pan.
