JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corp, met in regular session on Aug. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at John Glenn High School. All board members were present. The board and 38 observers began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion was made by Mary Kay Stedman and seconded by Dan Patrick to approve the minutes of the July 24 regular and executive sessions. The motion to approve the minutes passed seven to zero. APPROVAL CLAIMS #1305-1341 A motion was made by Dan Patrick and seconded by Nilas Miller to approve claims numbered 1305 through 1341. The motion passed seven to zero. PATRON RESPONSE There was no patron response. Mr. Reese reminded any patron desiring to be put on the agenda to speak at school board meetings to contact his office by Friday a.m. prior to the regularly scheduled school board meeting. Liberty School as spokesman for the other principals, wanted to compliment the school corporations custodians on the excellent job of preparation of the buildings for school. OLD BUSINESS 1. Middle School. Mr. Reese advised patrons of student registration days, those being August 14 and 15, 1991. The official time for registration on August 14 will be from 12:30 to 7:00 p.m. and on the 15th from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Patrons having questions about specific building registration procedures are encouraged to contact the respective buildings. 2. Athletic Insurance. Mr. Reese advised the board to accept Mr. Gark’s recommendation that student athletes at John Glenn High School not be charged for athletic insurance for the 199192 school year. The athletic department will pay approximately $5,250 and completely underwrite the cost of athletic insurance for the 1991-92 school year. This decision will be reviewed yearly to determine whether the high school athletic department has the ability to underwrite the cost of athletic insurance. A motion was made by Don Ludwig and seconded by Dave Hostetler to approve the administration’s recommendation that the John Glenn High School
athletic department pay the cost for athletic insurance for the 1991 school year. The motion passed seven to zero. NEW BUSINESS 1. Personnel. a. John Glenn School Corp. 1. Superintendent of Schools (1991-94), Richard M. Reese. A motion was made by Dave Hostetler and seconded by Gene Knowlton to appoint Richard M. Reese as Superintendent of Schools for the John Glenn School Corp, with the dates of his contract to read from Aug. 7, 1991 through June 30, 1994. Mr. Nilas Miller had questions concerning salary that would be paid to Mr. Reese. Board members agreed that Mr. Reese shall be paid a salary equal to the past superintendent and will also be provided with the same fringe benefits. After teacher negotiations are settled, a recommendation concerning salary and benefits for all administrators, including Mr. Reese, will be made. The motion to appoint Mr. Reese as superintendent passed seven to zero. Mrs. Josie Snell, Urey secretary, speaking for a group of Urey Middle School staff members that were in attendance, let Mr. Reese know that they were going to miss him at Urey, but do support his appointment as superintendent of schools. Mr. Reese informed the public that Mr. Kaufman will divide his time between North Liberty and Urey Middle School until a permanent principal can be hired at Urey. A tentative timeline of October 1, has been set for the new principal at Urey to be employed. 2. JGSC Bus Driver appointment, Ed Barden. Mr. Reese reacommends the board appoint Mr. Ed Barden as John Glenn School Corp, bus driver. Mr. Barden will drive a North Liberty Elementary School bus route for the 1991-92 school year. The motion to appoint Mr. Ed Barden as corporation bus driver was made by Dave Hostetler and seconded by Don Ludwig. The motion passed seven to zero. Aide. Mr. Reese advised the board to accept Joan Haney’s resignation as an instructional aide at Walkerton Elementary School. Mr. Dan Patrick made the motion to approve Mrs. Haney’s resignation which was seconded by Nilas Miller. The board made note of Mrs. Haney’s contributions to the educational program at Walkerton Elementary School and have appreciated all of the efforts she has put forth to help the students in the corporation. Mrs. Haney has given 16 yrs. of dedicated service to the children of our school community and will be missed by students and staff. The motion passed seven to zero. 2. Appointments. a. Mr. Joel Wilson, teacher, grade 5. Mr. Reese recommended the board of school trustees appoint Mr. Joel Wilson to fill the temporary contract to teach sth grade at WES. A motion was made by Don Ludwig and seconded by Mary Kay Stedman to appoint Mr. Wilson as teacher at WES. The motion passed seven to zero. b.
