Proposed New Middle School Hearing Aug. 22 The John Glenn School Corporation Board of Trustees invites all interested patrons to attend a public hearing on August 22, 1991 at 7:00 p.m. in the Urey gymnasium. The main topic of discussion of the “1028 Hearing’' will be the proposed new middle school. New Before And After Program At W.E.S. The Walkerton Elementary School will be the site for the new “Before and After School Program” to be offered starting this fall session. All children who attend Kindergarten through 6th grade at Walkerton Elementary School as well as St. Patrick’s School are eligible. The morning session will start at 6:30 a.m. until 7:50 a.m. and the afternoon session will start at 2:50 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. The charge will be $1.25 per hour, per child, but may vary with the family’s gross income. Don’t let the charge put you off, talk to us, we will work out something to benefit all concerned. This program has been formulated to benefit the community. We hope that the parents will take advantage of this much needed service. The program will not be a profit making business. We hope to sustain ourselves on money collected as fees. We will be hiring people who enjoy working with children and want to make a difference in their community. If you are interested in a part time job of 3-5 hours, call us. Minimum wage will be paid until we are better organized. Volunteers are welcome and will play a very important part in our program. We do want this program to be beneficial to the whole community and are open for suggestions and ideas. CATCHES 24” CATFISH Nine year old Robert McMillen had the thrill of his young life on August 15, he landed a 24 inch channel catfish. Robert, his dad Mike and friend, Joe, went fishing at Fish Lake. Robert got the fish on a #l2 hook and a wax worm. Congratulations! From a normal deck of cards, it s possible to deal 2,598,960 different five-card hands.

TEMPORARY HOURS AT LIBRARY During the renovation of the sidewalk in front of the library, we will be open revised hours. Renovations are due to start about September Ist, and it should take until approximately September 14th. During the time that there is construction work in front of the library, we will be open from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday thru Friday and 9:30 to 12:30 Saturdays. As usual we will be closed Sunday and Mondays. The dates that we will be open these revised hours may vary. It will depend on when the construction begins and ends in front of the library. If you feel it would be difficult to cross the construction please feel free to call to renew your books. The library's number is 586-2933 . 2ta29 ANNUAL HOG ROAST The Tracy United Methodist Church will hold its annual hog roast on August 31st, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The church is located on Highway 6 & 35, approximately 2 miles east of Kingsford Heights. A full meal which includes green beans, sauerkraut, potato and applesauce and cost is $5.00 for adults and $2.50 for children. For a lighter meal try our sandwich plate for $3.00 (includes chips). Carryouts are available. Come and eat and also come and browse around our flea market which opens at 9:00 a.m. with lots of items for sale. A farm produce wagon will also be open offering baked goods, vegetables, fruits, etc. Come join us August 31st! INFORMATIONAL MEETING AT ST. PATRICK SCHOOL St. Patrick's School will host an informational meeting for parents on Thursday, August 22, at 6:00 p.m., in the school hall. Recent changes in the student handbook, which were developed by the St. Patrick's School Advisory Board, will be reviewed. School faculty and staff will also be introduced. STARKE COUNTY TO DISTRIBUTE SURPLUS FOODS Surplus food will be distributed by the Council on Aging on August 22, to eligible households. The Commodities Program is administered by the Indiana Department of Human Services. Locally, the township trustees assist the Council on Aging in distributing the food. Items to be distributed include: flour, butter, green beans, applesauce, and rice. To be eligible for food, the household must meet the following income guidelines: House- Annual Annual hold Income Income Size Under 60 yn. The Council on Aging and trustees have a form available for third-party pickup, which should be obtained prior to the date of distribution. Persons will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. The commodities are donated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and not to be sold or exchanged. Distribution will take place in Oregon Township, at the Koontz Lake Fire Station on Indiana 23, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. CHURCH SERVICES AT THE PARK The North Liberty United Methodist Church will host the 8:30 a.m. worship at Potato Creek, on Sunday, August 25. Join us at the Peppermint Hill Picnic Shelter and enjoy God’s word in a beautiful outdoor setting. The church will also host regular Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. followed by a church pot luck at 11:00 a.m. Sign in at the front gate and you will not have to pay a fee. Potato Creek Park To Host Governor’s Cup Potato Creek State Park, located near North Liberty, will host the last of five regional running and walking events in the eighth annual AUL/Governor’s Cup on Saturday, September 14, beginning at 8:15 a.m. The series features several fitness activities that should appeal to the whole family: a competitive 8K (4.97-mile Race, a competitive 8K Race Walk, a non-competitive 5K (3.1-mile) fitness Walk, a One-Mile Fun Run and a Pee Wee Race for youngsters two through six years old. After the events, participants can enjoy fresh fruit and awards ceremony festivities. “I’m pleased that American United Life Insurance Company is continuing to show support for Hoosier fitness with the 1991 AUL/Governor’s Cup,” said Governor Evan Bayh. “The series has become one of Indiana's premiere family fitness activities and provides people a good opportunity to visit several of our state parks. The Indiana State Parks system will celebrate its 75th anniversary this year with a renewed commitment to the future. We have one of the oldest and best systems of state parks in the United States, a fact of which every Indiana citizen can be proud. I encourage Hoosiers to participate in the AUL/Governor’s Cup series and enjoy the natural beauty of our state.” Male and female overall winners (8K Run only) receive SIOO each. And to recognize the achievements of the mature 8K Race runners, there will be a SSO cash prize for the fastest male and female in the 40-49 age category and in the 50-and-over age category. (Cash prizes are higher for the Finale). Competitive racewalkers will not be monitored and are on their honor to walk the entire 8K distance (no running). Plaques will be presented to the top three male and female racewalk finishers in the 8K event. Both 8K runners and racewalkers will be eligible for age division awards and will receive personal race stats in the mail after the race. Ribbons will be presented to all finishers in the 5K Walk, the OneMile Fun Run, and to all Pee Wee racers. Several prizes will recognize the overall male and female Pee Wee Race winners in the age two-to-four and the age five-to-six divisions. A pre-registration fee of $lO is charged for each competitive 8K Race and Race Walk and $7 for participation in the 5K non-com-petitive Walk. Advance registration forms and checks must be received the Wednesday prior to each regional event. Race day registration is sl2 for the competitive 8K Race and Race Walk and $9 for the non-competitive 5K Walk. Participants in the 8K Race and Race Walk and 5K Walk will receive a souvenir shirt. There is no charge to participate in the Pee Wee Event or One-Mile Fun Run. Entry forms are available at most running and biking stores, Indiana State Parks, YMCAs, fitness centers and American United Life agencies throughout the state, or by calling the toll-free Race Hotline at 1-800-622-4931. Glenn To Play In Jamboree At Bremen Friday The John Glenn Falcons will participate in the Bremen Football Jamboree this Friday night with teams from LaViJle and Triton joining the host Bremen team as well. The format for play is: first quarter, Bremen versus LaVille. Bremen will put the ball in play on the 30 yard line. The second quarter will have Glenn and Triton meeting with the Falcons having the ball wherever it is on the field at the end of the first quarter. The third quarter will have the host Lions and Triton playing with Triton having the ball on the 30 yard line and then Glenn and LaVille will meet in the last period with LaVille taking possession wherever the bail is on the field. There will be five minutes between quarters with a ten minute break at halftime. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. for the action to begin. Admission for everyone except pre-schoolers is $3.00. The preschoolers are free. Glean Fan Bus The fan bus for the jamboree Friday night will be scheduled as follows: 6:15, leave North Liberty United Methodist Church parking lot. 6:30 p.m., John Glenn High School west parking lot; and 6:45, Tyner, at Ray’s Grocery Store. The cost to ride the fan bus is SI.OO for adults and students. Glenn will open the regular season on Friday, August 30, at home with Jimtown as their opponent. ADULT BASIC EDUCATION CLASSES TO BEGIN The John Glenn School Corporation will begin adult basic education classes on Monday, September 9 in the John Glenn High School library at 6:30 p.m. These classes are for adults who wish to prepare for the GED test, learn to read, or to improve one's skill in math, reading, grammar, and spelling. There are no fees for these classes however, you must be at least 18 years old and must have been withdrawn from regular school for at least one year. More information will appear in future editions. Initiated in 1983, the Series is a cooperative effort between American United Life and State Parks Division of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
