NORTH LIBERTY NEWS By Gladys Sheneman Lois Hunt, of Lakeville, played the piano for the birthday party at Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, held Sunday for all the residents who had birthdays during July. There were ten, namely, Bill Swihart (73), Shirley Shaw (62), Clela Northam (73), Gladie Sprunger (84), May Albright (91), Jane Keefe (89), Madeline Petrosino (79), George Stombaugh (89), John Peterson (75) and Madeline Sorenson (87). Karen Warner and daughter, Becky, and Marka Jackson of the Tri Kappa, North Liberty, served birthday cake, punch and coffee to a large crowd that was present to be with their loved ones who were celebrating their birthday this month. I am very happy to report that we will soon have two businesses opening up in August in the old hardware building. Nunley’s Trophy & T-Shirt will be moving and they are expanding into a line of sporting goods and we certainly wish them well and then Success Realty with Lisa Patton, brokerowner, will be in business soon, next to Nunley’s. On Saturday afternoon, at 4:30 p.m., Florence Garwood attended the wedding of her great niece, Patty Olsen, held at the First English Lutheran Church in South Bend. Patty is the daughter of Jim and Marie Olsen, of Greene Township. After the wedding, all attended a sit down dinner for 200 held at the Avalon Grado, while Roger Kronk’s band entertained during the evening. North Liberty Park, with 62 attending coming from Seymour, Jonesboro, Gary, Valparaiso, Muncie, Hobart, Hebron and North Liberty. Mrs. Dewey Thomas (90) was the oldest member persent. Scott and Tanya Johnson and new baby son, Nathan, born on July 2, spent the weekend with Bob and Donabelle Balsley. A baby shower was held for Tanya and Nathan on Friday night at the First Baptist Church. The baby received many lovely gifts. About 30 were present and lovely refreshments were served. Edna Steele, Tanya’s grandmother, was also present. Mr. and Mrs. Travis Holmes and son, Michael, spent the weekend with Jay and Kari Williams and helped them move into their new home in Crete, Illinois. Frank Rauen arrived Sunday evening from Monette, Missouri and spent Sunday night with his mother, Ethel Rauen and left Monday on a business trip to Michigan. Charles Whitmer of North Liberty, returned home on Tuesday from the LaPorte Hospital. Sorry to report we have had no rain and the crops are really looking bad in this area. It will surely rain this week, as the St. Joseph Co. Fair is on and it use to always rain and I mean we have had some bad storms when my kids were in the 4-H Fair in South Bend at the old Playland Park grounds. Bob and Pauline Powers and Gladys Sheneman enjoyed dinner together last Thursday evening at the Family Tree Restaurant, in Knox. The crops down that way look much better than around here. Many from the area attended the Historical Days in New Carlisle, on Friday evening. Evadene Platz and Galdys Sheneman accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Kaufman of Fish Lake, where Gerald and Evadene entertained in the Fun Follies Band, of LaPorte.

The band will be entertaining at the Potato Creek Festival, so be sure and see them perform as they have a wonderful variety program. Sunday, Aug. 4, the Pleasant View Missionary Church, along with their pastor, Dennis Potoczky, will hold the Sunday morning service for the campers at 8:30 a.m. at Peppermint Hill at Potato Creek Park. Remember Friday, Aug. 2 is going to be a fun day at the Five Star Store in North Liberty from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will be a hostess to greet you, a nutrition table to give you tips on diet and nutrition, Marvin the monkey will be present along with Sparky, the clown and others. Pat Murphy, head baseball coach of Notre Dame will be present from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to talk to and also Sunny the News Hound will be at the store from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Many have volunteered to bag groceries for an hour which will be a big help and as you all know by now, Five Star is proud to sponsor the "Grocers Fight Cancer’’ event in their North Liberty and Knox stores on Aug. 2. This day a percentage of their total day sales will be donated to the American Cancer Society to help fund research, service and educational programs. Florence Garwood spent last week with her son and family, Robert Gard and while there, along with her two great-grandsons, Heather and Robbie Gard. They all spent time fishing at the Monroe Resevoir, near Huntington, but didn’t have much luck. Mrs. Bert Rudynski and Mary Louise Sheneman still remain very ill in the hospital, so please remember them. Those attending the Ladies Retreat at Bruce Lake, Indiana, July 21 through July 24 were Alice Brown, Virginia Ross, Eilene Snyder, Georgia Bergiand, Garland McFarland, Mae McDaniel, Helen Wentz, Leslie White and friend, Maryin. We studied Hebrews, Chapter 11 and the eight keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. A good time was enjoyed by all and we thank Helen and Garland for the good lessons.

North Liberty Church of Christ sent 17 teen-agers and four adults on a mission to Cookson Hills Christian School, in Kansas, Oklahoma last week. The youth raised S6OO with support from private donations to leave for the school. They painted houses, tore down fences, cleared rocks out of fields and hauled logs. It was an exciting time to work for this childrens home and put our faith into action. Mr. and Mrs. Ron Peterson and Mr. and Mrs. Tim Steward were their leaders. Just a note to let you know Marjorie Fair had the misfortune of falling and fracturing her ankle and is now in a cast. So please remember her. Great Potato Cook-Off Contest At 1991 Festival A new feature of the North Liberty Lions Club Potato Creek Festival this year will be The Great Potato Cook-off Contest. The recipes must feature potatoes in some form. There will be cash prizes awarded: $25.00 for first place, $15.00 for second place and SIO.OO for third place. Bring entries to the Festival on Saturday, August 17 before 11:30 a.m. at the red and white striped tent in the Ist Source Bank parking lot, in North Liberty. Judging will begin at noon.

So bring your favorite potato dish - appetizers, soups, side or main dishes, desserts, candy, etc. and see if you can win! The Potato Creek Festival will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 16, 17 and 18. Booths filled with arts, crafts, food, drink and much more will be set up on the main street, with activities also in the local park. Entertainment by magicians, singers, bands, etc. will also be on hand. STEELE REUNION The 91st reunion of the Steele family was held Sunday, July 21, at the Stuntz and Hochstetler Pines, with 26 persons attending. The oldest person attending was Grant Steele, of Walkerton, age 86, and the youngest was Melissa King of South Bend, age 7. Coming the farthest were Susan Steele Marquez and three children from Monon, Indiana. Those attending were from Niles, Michigan; and Monon, Milford, Elkhart, Mishawaka, South Bend, Walkerton and North Liberty. Current officers re-elected for the coming year were: Robert A. Steele, Mishawaka, president; Patricia Johnson, Elkhart, vicepresident; and Maz E. Steele, North Liberty, secretary-treasurer. Next year’s reunion will be held Sunday, July 19,1992 at Stuntz and Hochstetler Pines.
