WALKERTON DEMOCRAT CONVENTION The Walkerton Democrat Convention will be held on Tuesday, July 23, at 7:00 p.m., at the Walkerton Community building. The convention is being held to elect candidates for Wards 3, 4 and 5; clerk-treasurer and for Town Court Judge. Candidates wishing to be on the slate must file a declaration of candidacy with St. Joseph County Clerk, Marilyn Rzeszewski, prior to the convention. Jaske Appointed To Solid Waste Management Board Leonard S. Jaske has been formaly appointed to the St. Joseph County Solid Waste Management District Board of Directors. Jaske is a member of the Walkerton Town board where he serves on the Planning Committee and the Walkerton Investment Committee. He is a graduate of John Glenn High School and from Anderson University where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in business management. Jaske has been employed at Mahoney Chevrolet, Olds and GEO, in Walkerton, for approximately eight years. He is married and has two daughters. GOLF SCRAMBLE The second annual North Liberty Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, August 17, at Whispering Pines Golf Course. Entry fee is S3O per person which includes meal and drinks. The winning foursome will receive S3O per person. For a hole-in-one on number 14, 180 yards long, will receive $10,000.00. SEUSS FEST Friday, July 19, at 2:30 p.m., is Dr. Seuss Fest at the Walkerton Library. Five different Dr. Seuss stories will be show. The classic Cat in the Hat will start the series followed by Pontffel Pock, The Sneetches, The Zax and finally, Green Eggs and Ham. All ages are welcome, but please, children under the age of five should be accompanied by an adult. For more information call the library at 586-2933. CHEERLEADING COMPETITION JULY 20 The second annual Starke County 4-H Cheerleading competition will be held on Sat., July 20, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Registration is from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Starke County 4-H Fairgrounds, Hamlet. Varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders will compete in seperate catagories with trophies and awards for first, second and third places in each catagory to be awarded. JUDY O’BANNON TO SPEAK AT DOWNTOWN GROUNDBREAKING
The Town of Walkerton will be breaking ground for its downtown renaissance on Friday, July 26th at 2:00 p.m. A ceremony will be held at downtown’s Urey Park at the corner of Roosevelt Road and Illinois Street. Featured speaker will be Mrs. Judy O’Bannon, chairperson of the Indiana Main Street Council and wife of Lt. Governor Frank O’Bannon. Also in attendance will be Craig Hartzer, Director of the Community Development Division of the Indiana Department of Commerce. The Walkerton Redevelopment Commission obtained a $150,800 grant through the Department of Commerce for this project. The grant will pay for new curbs, sidewalks, antique lighting, trees and other amenities for downtown Walkerton. The Town of Walkerton will do all necessary demolition work for the project, and the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce is providing funds for storefront renovation rebates. The Chamber

REPUBLICAN CONVENTION IN WALKERTON The Walkerton Republican Convention, to select candidates for the fall Town Election, will be held on Thursday, July 18, at 7:00 p.m. at the 1.0.0. F. Hall of Roosevelt Road, at 7:00 p.m. This year there will be three council seats, in Wards 3, 4 and 5; the Clerk-Treas-urer’s office; and the Judge of the Walkerton Town Court up for election. Candidates for these offices must file with the County Clerk at 12:00 noon of the day prior. PRIVATE WATER TESTING PROGRAM TO BE OFFERED A private water testing program is being offered to St. Joseph County residents who have private water systems. A goal of analyzing a minimum of 200 private wells throughout the rural areas of the county to gather data on private systems to assess the quality of drinking water is the intention of the program. This will aid in assisting participants in evaluating their confidential test results. Options available are testing for nitrates or pesticide screen or both. The cost is $12.00 for nitrates or $27.00 for pesticide screens. The total package will be done for $37.00. Checks should be made to The Extension Education Fund. To participate you should decide which of the test options you want and then pick up a test sampling kit at the Farm Bureau Insurance Office, the County Extension Office Room 646 County-City’ Building, or at the Extension Service 4-H Fair Office in the Esther Singer Building or Farm Bureau Booth in the Commercial Building at the Fair July 29-August 3. Instructions for taking the water samples will be with the test kit. Each kit will contain three test vials and an information sheet. All three vials must be filled with water from the same water source and faucet. If you want to test more than one source, you must purchase additional kits. The kits and participant’s information sheet must be returned on Monday, August 5 to one of the pick up points or Zahl’s Elevator, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in New Carlisle; the North Liberty Fire Station, 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., in North Liberty; the Wyatt Fire Station, 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., in Wyatt; or the Harris Twp. Fire Station, 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. This program is sponsored by the St. Joseph County Farm Bureau and the Cooperative Extension Service. N. L. Republican Convention Thursday, July 18 The Republican convention for the Town of North Liberty will be held July 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the North Liberty Community Center. The purpose of the convention is to select the nominees for all town offices to be elected at the next municipal election, specifically, town council members for wards 2, 3, and 4 and Clerk-Treasurer. ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUP TO MEET The next Alzheimer’s Support Group meeting will be held at Miller's Merry Manor, in Walkerton, on Tuesday, July 30, at 7:15 p.m. The third in a series of videos will be shown and the title of this video is “Safety First.” People with Alzheimer’s disease experience changes in their mental capacities. As their ability to remember, reason and communicate weakens, their preception on what is safe and unsafe becomes clouded. In addition, they may experience physical hardships such as immobility or unbalance. Because of mental and physical deficiencies, your family members with Alzheimer's may face a variety of potentially dangerous situations, especially in and around the home. This video makes safety a top priority for Alzheimer’s caregiving. It presents ways in which you can prepare your loved one for an emergency. HEAD START PROGRAM REGISTRATION The Hansel Neighborhood Service Center is currently seeking children for the North Liberty and Walkerton Head Start programs. Children who will be 3‘/j or 4 on or before June 1, 1991, and are from families with a limited income, are eligible. Registration will be held on Thursday. August 2, at Walkerton Presbyterian Church, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Parents should bring the child’s birth certificate; Medicaid number, proof of income and social security numbers of family numbers.
