To Celebrate 50th Anniversary With Open House e ^^^B Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Divine, of Walkerton, invite friends and family to join them in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, on Sunday, July 14, from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m., at the American Legion. Joining the celebration will be their three children, Paula Johnson, of Elkhart; Laura DivineGrote, of Coronado, Calif, and Melvin Ross Divine, Jr., of Plymouth. Also attending the celebration will be the couples eight grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Divine were married in the Walkerton Methodist Church and have lived in the area all their lives. Melvin retired in 1978 from John Glenn School Corp. Norine retired in 1980 from Jacob Drugs. The “Ragtimers” will provide the music and a buffet will be served. No gifts please. ENJOYS VISIT Mrs. Lillian Cozine, of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, was a house guest of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Klin edin st. last week. Jessica Meuninck is the recipient of a Ball State University Department of Art Outstanding Freshman Scholarship of $1,500.00. On May 20 she was awarded a $500.00 scholarship, in Plymouth, at the May meeting of the Heartland Artists. She was also honored at the May meeting of the Board of Directors of the Michiana Arts and Sciences Council with a $2,000.00 scholarship. A reception followed the meeting for all recipients where her work was displayed. All the scholarships awarded were based on the quality of her portfolio. Jessica is the daughter of Thomas and Karen Meuninck, Rt. 1, of Walkerton. She will attend Ball State University in the fall and intends to major in fine arts and art education. Former Resident In Touring Drum Corps Former resident, Megan Williamson, daughter of Wes and Pat Williamson and the granddaughter of Venetta Kelleher and Glenn Stark is touring the United States and Canada with the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps. The Glassmen is a group, based in Toledo, Ohio, comprised of 128 members ranging in age from 14 to 21. They are a drum corps Midwest Division I finalist and a drum corps International member who have placed in the top 25 in the world for the last three years. The season will close with them participating at the Cotton Bowl, in Dallas, Texas, on August 17, which will be a worldwide competition. This will complete a 15,000 mile summer tour. NORTH LIBERTY NEWS By Gladys Sheneman Tim and Terry Stewart and daughters spent two weeks with Terri’s parents, Lyndal and Jerrine Smith, in Eugene, Oregon. While there they toured many interesting places including the Redwood National Park, in Calif, and also spent time on the coast. After a wonderful vacation, they were very happy to arrive back in North Liberty safely. The 69th annual Heim Reunion was held on July 7th at Potato Creek State Part. There were 62 present. Ethel Hillegas, 88, was the oldest present and Tyler Duff, 4 weeks old, was the youngest. Everyone enjoyed the delicious carry-in dinner. After a short meeting, games were played along with horseshoes for the men. There were guests present from Cincinnati, Ohio, Plymouth, Bremen, Warsaw, South Bend, Walkerton and North Liberty. The reunion will be held same place next year. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Homfeldt, of Monette, Missouri, arrived Tuesday evening at the home of Travis and Joan Holmes and also their grandmother, Ethel Rauen’s, where they visited and spent the 4th enjoying the parade and then dinner afterward with all the family including Kari Williams, of Flossmoor, BL, Michael Holmes and friend, Chris, of Mishawaka, and Ethel Holmes. They left Friday for their home in Missouri. The Sunday morning church service will be at 8:30 a.m. for the campers at Potato Creek State Park with the Sumption Prairie Church in charge with Pastor Russ Davidson. Alice Keyawski, of State Road 23, and her brother, Ed Dalke, returned home Friday after spending twelve days visiting their sister, Florence Sheaks, in Desert Hot Springs, Calif. They also went sightseeing and saw many interesting places along the way. Seventy-five attended the Church of Christ Sunday morning worship service at Peppermint Hill. We were certainly blessed while there as it poured down rain which we needed so much, so we really were thankful and it let up just as the service ended so we could all make it to our cars without getting wet, but we still need lots more, as the crops are really looking sick now. Marjorie Fair, of 3602 So. Ironwood Dr., South Bend, IN 46614 is celebrating another birthday on July 26th. She wonders about all her North Liberty friends so please remember her as she loves to get mail. Lily O’Connor remains very ill in the hospital at this writing. Word was received that Mary Louise Sheneman will be dismissed Tuesday after spending the past two weeks in Memorial Hospital and having two operations. Greg Shoemaker entertained a group of relatives and friends with a potluck dinner in his home after the 4th of July parade. Maxine Worthington, Violet Wolff, Maxine Lonzo, Dorothy Miller and Gladys Sheneman had dinner together last Wednesday at Roseo’s Restaurant, on Pine Lake, and then went to Fountainview Terrace, where they entertained the residents from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. They were shocked to hear of two of the residents they had come to love and looked forward to seeing had both passed away over the weekend. Ruby Salyer, of Teegarden, and her sewing group, made a beautiful Desert Storm quilt this past winter and they just finished displaying it at LaPorte. They would like to display it at our North Liberty Potato Creek Festival. They are selling chances on it and the money will go to Hospice. If you can help Ruby out, please contact her. Five Star Foods and the American Cancer Society have teamed up to sponsor “Grocery Days Against Cancer” on Friday, August 2nd. Five Star will donate a percentage of that day’s total sales to the Cancer Society. There will be downs, entertainment, tips on dieting and nutrition. So please do your shopping on Friday, August 2 at our Five Star Store and help fight Cancer. Richard and Cindy Tomascewski, of Tamarack Road, entertained their family and neighbors at a picnic dinner after the 4th of July parade in North Liberty. It was a great time of feasting and visiting among the 50 neighbors who gathered together. A three-tiered angel food cake, such as their mother used to bake, graced the center of the table. Gladiolus added a lacy effect to the special cake. Also attending was William Behrenbruch, of Santa Barbara, California; Mr. and Mrs. Hindman and three daughters, of Wellsboro, Pennsylvania; and Mr. and Mrs. Gerbard Kubala and son, Kilian, of Stomping Ground, Kentucky. The whole group enjoyed the fireworks display at North Liberty park. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nottingham, of New York, spent a few days this past week with his aunt, Martha McCrosky and visited his aunt, Francis Slattery, at Miller’s Merry Manor. About 150 retired neighbors and friends gathered at the Pine Creek Church Tuesday noon where all enjoyed a picnic dinner prepared by the ladies of the church. First time visitors were Elson and Loretta Ruff, of Plymouth; Bernice Barnhart, of South Bend; Norma Bennett and Maxine Lonzo, of North Liberty. There were several celebrating birthdays in July. One death was reported, that was Glen Long, of Tyner, who had been attending regularly. Gladys Sheneman, president, told two funny jokes, then Evelyn Dolph read the secretary’s report and then all filled their plates and visited with their neighbors while eating together. After everything was cleared away they were entertained with some of their own home talent with a variety program with many participating. Maxine Lonzo brought along her monkey which she calls “Marvin” and he really made the people laugh. Yes it was a fun program and in closing Harold Roush commented about the 4th of July and how proud and thankful we should be of our country and then closed with prayer. Millie Fleck, of LaPaz, will be in charge of the next program the first Tuesday in August.
