EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS The nation’s “happy holiday”, the 4th of July, is just two weeks away. And yet for many, the preparing for this grand annual celebration began as early as last July. We are talking about those dedicated people who take charge of planning, financing and actually putting on the various activities for the local 4th of July celebrations. Many small towns have celebrated these annual programs for many years and certainly hope to continue for many more. However, the job is not getting any easier . . . and certainly is not getting any cheaper. The sponsoring bodies, whether an organization or a group of interested individuals, have a very big job to do . . . and one that doesn’t very often get the praise and thanks they deserve. In Walkerton, the 4th of July is now planned and controlled by a group called the “Friends of the Fourth”. This is not a large group, certainly not when compared to the forces of years past when the Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club and the American Legion used to handle this responsibility. These individuals do work year round to make this possible, whether it be the actual labor involved during the festivities or the very hard work of raising the thousands and thousands of dollars necessary to put on this annual celebration. In North Liberty, the Fire Depatment has overseen the operation of the 4th program for sometime now. They too have a big task in planning and financing this event. Both towns have a grand fireworks display to highlight the day. However, in other ways the programs feature different interests. Walkerton’s program centers more around a several day event with a carnival in the park and activities to fill in around the carnival and fireworks. In North Liberty, in addition to the fireworks, a parade has been featured for many years now, starting the activities in the afternoon to carry on over to the evening’s climatic fireworks display. Both of these programs take a lot of money. In addition to donations by many businesses, many other events are held to help bring in the thousands of dollars necessary' to put on these programs. This is where everyone can help. In these last two weeks, a more concentrated effort will be made to climax the financing of the programs, through different avenues. Raffles, a road block in Walkerton, and about any other source of income that is feasible will be used. Don’t be offended when you are asked to buy a raffle ticket to help finance the 4th, or even for an outright donation. These are just a couple of ways that everyone can help continue the very enjoyable 4th of July programs we have come to expect and receive. It is a hard job for a few, but many can help make it just a little bit easier by giving that little bit of help that is so needed. And don’t forget to say “thanks” to the very dedicated people who work hard to make this all come true. Without them Walkerton and North Liberty would not have these celebrations to look forward to and enjoy each year.

“Where An The Parenti?” Lately there have been breakins and vadalism in the North Liberty area. Although everyone is upset with this, all you hear is “where are the cops at when this is happening?” Its always being blamed on the police. Well, the police are not babysitters! Where are the parents! Why are these kids allowed to be on the streets at all hours of the night? The police can only do so much and the chances of the police catching them in the act is slim. They do what they can do. Maybe, before people bad mouth the police they should ask themselves, “where are my children and what are they doing?” Annoyed **Swwflme” h’s summertime and the grass needs cutting (constantly), the garden needs weeding and picking, the skateboarders are skating down the middle of U. S. 6. The other day as I was crossing U. S. 6, I was almost run into by three young men 10 or 12 years of age coming down the line on the highway on skateboards. Needless to say when 1 said something to them, I was answered by a few four letter words and the finger! Maybe I have no right correcting other peoples' children, but 1 certainly don’t care to see children (and these are still

children) killed or injured. Bicycle riders do not belong all over the road either. As I was driving through a residential area on Monday, I was caught in a game of tennis played back and forth across the street. Walkerton is a small town but it has very heavy traffic at all times. I also know that young people need to have areas in which they can play and enjoy themselves. Whatever happened to the swimming pool that Walkerton raised funds to build? Why were our tennis courts never replaced? Why aren’t the restrooms opened at Place Park during the day? Why can’t a skateboard area be built in the park? At the time, maybe we need a safe area for our youth to play, more importantly than benches and trees downtown. David Williams, whoever you are, please tell your friends your telephone number. We’ve been receiving calls for you since school has been out for vacation. Also Scott (another I don’t know), I certainly don’t know your whereabouts either, especially when your friends call at 2:00 a.m. Are you ready for the greatest show coming to Walkerton? Yes, I mean the presentation by the Friends of the Fourth and the Fire Department. On July 4th, a day of carnival rides, picnics and fireworks! lam even getting enthused. Through the help of the Walkerton area businesses, we’re putting on the biggest and best show to date. When you see names on the placemats, tell the contributing merchants thank you, better yet, show your appreciation by shop-

ping at these places! Rumors. I’m getting tired of them. Two weeks ago a local restaurant supposedly was closed by two workers walking out. Yes, two girls quit, but they went on to other jobs and there was a funeral in the ownership’s family. Good luck girls. Sorry owners. Case closed. Folks, water your pets and love your children. Sincerely, Nedra Williams North Liberty Has Recognition Day Program The North Liberty Elementary School held its Recognition Day for grades 1, 2 and 3 on Thursday, May 23rd.
