4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION DRAWS NEAR Only two more weeks til the big day! Things are coming together now, our weekly meetings are paying off. It looks like a pretty exciting day that we have planned. I’m anxious to hear the John Glenn High School Band perform the program they will be presenting in Washington D.C. It's been so long since I have heard any marches, I’m really looking forward to some good ole oom-pa-pa’s! The Great Swami (Ellis Swihart) will be entertaining us with his hypnotist act. Then later, Byron Craft and his band “Elite” will get the crowd moving to their music. BJ the Puppet and his antique truck will be moving through the crowd, during the day. Look for a crowd of kids, and you will most likely find him. Oh, and don't forget to attend the 10:00 a.m. church service in the park, and give thanks for the beautiful day ahead, and for our troops who served in the Persian Gulf. All Friends of the Fourth committee members will be selling raffle tickets at the park. So, be sure to get a chance on some big bucks! Os course, the Little League will be playing, starting at 11:00, and the Wabash Valley Shows will be running all day, also starting at 11:00. I would like to express the committee’s appreciation to Betty King and Deon Miller for all the work they do for this event. All year long, Betty, who is secretary/ treasurer, and Deon, who is our committee president, work to prepare for this day. If you see them in the park, please say “Thanks, Betty and Deon - Good Job!” By the way, I forgot to tell you in my last article, Tom Bradford from North Liberty won our last grocery bag drawing. Congratulations, Tom! Again, I would like to remind everyone that only Friends of the Fourth will be allowed to sell raffle tickets at the park on the 4th. But, we will gladly hold drawings for any organization who asks. Also, a reminder to use the trash containers at the park, instead of the ground. And, please, no alcoholic beverages or personal fireworks, either. We'll look for you at the Kiddie Parade on July 2, and, especially, during our road block on June 29. Remember, the guality of our show depends on the donations we receive from everyone. The committee would like to thank all those who donate time and money. After all, it is a community event! The schedule of events is listed elsewhere in this issue. CHRISTIAN WOMEN’S CLUB TO MEET JULY 3 “The Grand Old Flag” is the theme for the upcoming Marshall Co. Christian Women’s Club meeting on Wednesday, July 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Plymouth Holiday Inn. The buffet luncheon is $5.00 inclusive. POSTAL SERVICE SAFETY RULES Now that the weather is wanner and children are spending more time outside, the Postal Service is reminding parents of the importance of safety rules for children to used when near mail vehicles. Walkerton postmaster, Linda Johnson, urges parents to assist the Postal Service in its safety efforts by going over some basic rules with their children. “Please by aware of the great interest children have in mail trucks,” says Mrs. Johnson. "We know that they love getting mail for mom or dad, and this can be a fun and safe experience for them if they are made aware of and observe a few simple safety rules.” Mrs. Johnson recommends that the following rules be adopted by every family with children. § Never send children out to get the mail from the letter carrier. § When children are outside they should never walk in front of, or come from behind the mail truck. § Children should stand behind the mailbox until after the carrier pulls away. § Children should be discouraged from using bikes and hot wheels as a “ladder” to reach the mailbox. § Children should not follow the mail truck on their bikes, skateboards, or on foot. Ethel Bierly Celebrates Her 90th Birthday H Long-time area resident, Ethel Bierly, was 90 years young on June 17 and was honored with a birthday celebration on Sunday, June 16th. Ethel was born in the home on State Road 104 in which she presently resides, the oldest of eight children born to Harriett and W. E. (Bert) Bierly. Her formal education began at the one-room Dare School formerly located on Route 104. She later attended the Carlisle School which is now the Johnson Township Community Building and was graduated from Walkerton High School in 1920. Ethel enjoys telling of driving the cattle to pasture, approximately a mile down what was then a dirt road, as she walked to town. She laughingly says things got better in late fall and winter when the family horses were no longer needed in the fields and she could travel to school by horse and buggy. With her newly-earned high school diploma, Ethel departed for Ralph, South Dakota, where she taught 12 pupils in a one-room school and lived with a local farm family, traveling seven miles by horseback to the school. Subsequently, she returned to Indiana where she taught in a number of schools including Clinton Township, Hudson Lake, Mill Creek, White’s Institute in Wabash, and North Judson. She also earned her degree in education from Manchester College. In 1972 she retired from the North Judson School System. Ethel is a member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church, the Starke County Retired Teachers’ Association, and is an honorary member of the Walkerton Community Club. She has four brothers, Russell, Lester, Amos and Floyd, all of Walkerton, and two sisters, Josephine Smith, also of Walkerton, and Doris Malstaff, of Union Mills. A brother, Benjamin, died in 1983. While Ethel’s eyesight is failing, she remains remarkably alert and interested in local and world events. WALKERTON CLASS OF 1966 PLANS REUNION The Class of 1966 of Walkerton High School will be having their 25th reunion on Saturday, July 6, at the Walkerton American Legion.
