JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES May 7, 1991 Regular Session And Executive Session CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on May 7, 1991 at 7:30 p.m. in the library of the Walkerton Elementary School. Those present included Nilas Miller, Dave Hostetler, Don Ludwig, Mary Kay Stedman, Gene Knowlton, Dan Patrick and Jean Ann Beem. The Board and 31 observers opened the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion was made by Gene Knowlton and seconded by Mary Kay Stedman to approve the minutes of the April 23, 1991 regular meeting and executive sessions. The vote was six/zero with Jean Ann Beem abstaining because she was not present during that meeting. APROVAL OF CLAIMS 715 - 809 A motion was made by Dr e Hostetler and seconded by Jean Ann Beem to approve claims numbered 715 through 809. Following discussion, it was noted that claim number 810 was to be held for further discussion. The vote was seven/zero. PATRON RESPONSE There was no Patron Response. RECOGNITIONS 1. students participated in an Earth Day Poster Contest during Earth Week. From the many excellent posters turned in, the following winners were chosen: Ist, Casey Pawell; 2nd, Crystal Brooke; 3rd, Shasta Wines; 4th, Patricia Lozano. On April 24 the Urey Academic Team took the Knowledge Master Open, a computerized quiz bowl of 200 multiple choice questions. Urey came in 12th out of 46 schools in the State of Indiana and 385th out of 1,470 in the United States. On May 4 the UMS Academic Team competed at Bremen Middle School in the Hoosier Academic Super Bowl. This year’s theme was “The Renaissance: Luminary to the Modern World.” Out of 13 schools in our region, Urey came in fifth in both math and social studies categories and third in the all-around category. The students worked hard this year and represented Urey very well in all areas. Students who participated were Chris Arick, Danny Beem, Matt Church, Nathan Cripe, David Guseilla, Barry Houser, Chris Mattix, Casey Pawell, Joe Pletcher, Ryan Schmeltz, Joshua Smith, Kelly Tingle, Scott Tribbey, Glen White and Jeremy W’ynn. Mr. Andy Stegemiller and Mrs. Lisa Cox are coaches for the team. Mr. Reese stated that Urey wanted to acknowledge the financial participation in Junior Achievement’s Project Business Program. They are American Door, Combo Corporation, Farmer State Bank, Charles O. As noted previously, Christi Clark from Miller’s Merry Manor, Jayne Cooper from Ist Source Bank, Sue Louzon from Farmers State Bank, Steve Kruszynski from Teachers Credit Union, Dave Behr from Walkerton Chamber of Commerce and Gary Brooks representing South Bend Tribune, are the business consultants who gave their tin^e and effort in working with the Urey students. The week of May 6 is Teacher/ Staff Appreciation Week designated by the P.T.A. The Urey P.T.A. very graciously supplied assorted “goodies” to the Urey staff, and Mr. Reese and all the staff at Urey wished to publicly thank the P.T.A. Mr. Reese announced that the Urey Middle School Awards Night Program will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 1991. The Bob Clark Memorial Award, D.A.R. Awards, and Outstanding Seventh and Eighth grade student awards are among the special awards that will be presented to UMS students. Along with those special awards, athletic departmental and attendance awards will also be presented. Mr. Reese invited students, parents, relatives and friends, as well as the general public, to attend. Mr. Reese announced that Anittah Patrick placed Bth in the Marshall County Spelling Bee and congratulated her for this outstanding performance. Mr. Reese called attention to a Lilly Endowment national publication that pictures the Voyager Club and sponsor, Vera Tiani, and refers to UMS accomplishments. Principal Brent Kaufman, North Liberty Elementary School, recognized and thanked the P.T.A. for their work dirng Teacher Appreciation Week. North Liberty Elementary School Awards Day will be on May 23 for grades one through three and on May 24 for grades four through six. meeting concerning development of the Day Care Center. Marilyn Lightfoot, Walkerton Elementary Principal, reported that the Knights of Columbus 5709 donated $443.26 to the Marshall County Special Olympics. This gift helps sponsor the program in which the John Glenn students participate. Mrs. Lightfoot recognized Kim Vail, 4th grade student in her first year of computer keyboard instruction. She won the award for the fastest speed of 71 words per minute. Omni Medical Clinic has given free physicals to students who had previous records with them so the resource students could participate in Special Olympics. The P.T.A. paid for students not in that classification who next year will be eligible for the free physicals. Mrs. Lightfoot also recognized Mrs. Rehlander, Mrs. Hockman and Mrs. Holland for the effort and work they expended in encouraging their students to participate at the Special Olympics in Plymouth on April 27. Most students had parents there supporting them and encouraging them to do their best which is the goal of the program. There were 28 students from Walkerton Elementary and John Glenn High School who participated. Seven students from Walkerton Elementary will be traveling to Notre Dame on May 11 to compete in the Regional Special Olympics. Winners are: Mike Mickelle, Bill Miller, Bobby Gross, Jason Peterson, Craig Bishop, Eugene Lamphier, Mike Simpkins, Tom Turner and Jim Lowe. Mrs. Lightfoot, on behalf of the Walkerton Elementary School staff, thanked the P.T.A. for the favors they bestowed all week as a part of Teacher Appreciation Week. 2. Special Recognition — Chapter One The Board recognized and complimented those teachers responsible and Jan Hayes, Chapter One Coordinator, for the Chapter One Program for Parents that will be held at IUSB on May 10. Mrs. Hayes and the teachers planned the complete program that offers many choices for the approximately 1,000 parents that will tend.OLD BUSINESS 1. Mr. Patrick stated that his vote against was not reflective of his opinion of the architectural firm, that in fact he does not support the current proposal. NEW BUSINESS 1. Personnel a. The vote was seven/zero. 2. Appointments — Summer Positions A motion was made by Gene Knowlton and seconded by Mary Kay Stedman to appoint the following persons to summer positions: a. Martha Keeling, Head Cook, John Glenn High School A motion was made by Dave Hostetler and seconded by Gene Knowlton to honor a request from Martha Keeling as Head Cook to be reassigned as a regular cook in the John Glenn School Corporation. The vote was seven/zero. b. Urey Middle School 1. Resignation a. Carolyn Alexander, Football Cheerleader Sponsor A motion was made by Gene Knowlton, seconded by Mary Kay Stedman to accept the resignation of Carolyn Alexander as Football Cheerleader Sponsor.
