YOU AND . YOUR PET Dear Dr. Wiae: Our cat Raggety seems to be addicted to our house plants. She chews on the leaves, digs around in the dirt in the pot and sometimes uses it as if it were a litter box. If she doesn't ruin the plant with the chewing or with urine, she breaks it up by knocking over the pot. As a final "insult,”

she throws up all over the house because the leaves do not seem to agree with her. Do you have any suggestions to stop this behavior? We hate to give up plants because they add so much to our home. It is not an option to get rid of Raggety. Answer: From a cat’s point of view, houseplants also add a natural feeling to the environment, especially if the cat spends most of her time indoors. They are a great source of entertainment. Cats enjoy looking at and touching plants. You can discourage Raggety from chewing on your plants by sprinkling the leaves with ginger (yes, the same spice used in gingerbread). First spray the plant with a fine mist of water then put a pinch of powdered ginger on the most accessible leaves. The ginger will not hurt either Raggety or the plant.

You can buy repellants to spray on the plants. Just be sure they will not harm the plants. You can discourage Raggerty’s digging by covering the soil in the pots. Some people use a layer of small, rough decorative rocks. Others use a brown mesh needlepoint canvas and cut a slit for the stem from the center of the pot to the edge. The slit can be fastened together with brown hairpins. Decorative bark is not recommended for covering since cats like to bat it about. It makes a mess and also can leave spinters in paws. When selecting a plant, make sure it is not a variety that is toxic. Signs of plant poisoning are irritation and swelling of the mouth and throat, rashes, vomiting and abdominal pain, diarrhea, trembling, salivation and breathing problems. These may not show up until 18-24 hours after the cat has ingested some of the plant. If you suspect poisoning, call your veterinarian who probably will want to see the plant as well as the cat. You can satisfy Raggety’s appetite for greenery by growing special grass for her to eat. Small preplanted containers usually can ■ BY HYDRO! LO
