Walkerton Women's Club Holds Meeting The GFWC Walkerton Women's Community Club met on Friday. March 15. with 28 members in attendance. Lucille Dipert introduced her hostess committee, Lucile Dickson. Helen Cowood and Margaret Moravek. Lucille Dipert gave the devotions The speaker for the occasion was Mark Dubuque. who runs Camp Awareness at Koontz Lake. Mr. Dubuque said that having been a troubled teenager himself, having abused drugs and alcohol, he believed he knew how to get troubled teenage boys back on the right track. So he worked with these youngsters for five years at White Institute, in Indianapolis, in a special program called Project Foster Care. As a licenced foster parent, he counselled 16 boys. In January , 1987. Dubuque and his wife bought the campground at the lake and Camp Awareness was bom. From five boys at the first session, the numbers grew to 28 boys last summer. There have been no runaways, no break-ins. no problems with the community at all. years, are counseled on the problems of puberty, drugs, alcohol, manners and respect for authority. The camp gets financial assistance from a few organizations in the state but they raise 50 percent of their budget themselves. Carol Knop was sworn in as vice president by Alice Walker. She will serve until the next election, having taken over the office of Barbara Simpson who now holds the office of president. Birthday ladies were Shirley Awald, Pauline Stanley. Margaret Moravek, Lucile Dickson, Helen Cowood and Lucille Dipert. Lucille Dipert drew the lucky number for the birthday gift. Freda Meyer gave an interesting report on a World Exchange program, in South Bend. Twenty Russian students were to have taken part but only half that number came over. Their parents were fearful of sending them due to reports of drugs and alcohol problems, in South Bend. A group of St. Joseph County students will visit Russia in the near future. Alice Walker, art chairman, reported that she has six students lined up for the art competition the club sponsors. Mildred Casey asked members not to forget articles for the Silent Auction to be held at the next meeting on April 6th. President Simpson asked for reservations to the St. Joseph County Federation of Cubs Convention, at South Bend, on March 23. Reservations were also taken for the club’s Spring Breakfast, on April 19 at Al’s Diner, at Koontz Lake. A getwell card w as offered for signers by the sunshine chairman. Marian Ogle, to Josephine Nowakowski who is in the hospital. The meeting closed with the reading of the collect by all members present. The first polo game in America was played indoors at Dickel s Riding Academy in New York City in 1876
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN MEET The United Methodist Women met at the church on March 21 with Mrs. Jim Seiders welcoming all. Devotions were given by Mrs. Walter Smith and she used as her theme the deity of Christ. All joined in a responsive reading and then we sang “What Wonderous Love Is This." She closed with prayer. Prayer requests were given for Ted Hostetler, Paul Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Elkin's grandsons, Ann Clark. Carl Creech. Darlene Pontius. Mrs. Robert Keck and Aaron Bales. Prayer was then given. Thank you notes were received from Mrs. Carl Dilland of the LaPorte United Methodist Women. The new Circle has set their meeting time for April 2, at the church, at 7:30 p.m. They welcome any of the ladies to join them. The Mother-Daughter Banquet is set for May 9, at the church. It will be a pot luck dinner with the meat furnished by the United Methodist Women. More details will be decided later. Our annual Easter bake sale will be on Sat., March 30. at De Joss Drugs. Drop by and visit us anytime after 8:30 a.m. We welcome any baked goods for the sale. A new coffee pot will be purchased for use at the church. Dates to remember are April 2, the Ruth circle: April 7 is our charge conference where we will serve refreshments; April 8 is Hope Circle at Mrs. John Wathen’s; April 18 is our prayer and self denial program at 7 p.m.; and April 24 is the Day of Inspiration at the Maple Grove United Methodist Church from 9 a m. to 2 p.m. Luncheon cost is $4.50. Pastor Marilyn Gebert interested all with her wonderful slides and story about Korea. Mrs. Richard Kickbush dismissed the meeting with prayer. The Hope Circle served delicious refreshments. A RECORD SUNDAY FOR MAPLE GROVE CHURCH The Maple Grove United Methodist Church, located at the intersection of New and Maple Roads in South Bend, enjoyed a record attendance on Palm Sunday of 127 worshipers. the church fellowship also on this day. There were four persons receiving baptism as well. A reception was held in the church fellowship hall following the worship. On Thursday, March 28, Maple Grove will have a “Maundy Thursday" communion and drama worship at 7:00 p.m. On Easter Sunday, March 31, the Sunrise Worship at 7:00 a.m. will feature an “Easter Seder: We Remember" with Carol Saltzgaber, Brandi Brodzinski and Carolyn Weber having roles. An Easter Sunrise Breakfast will be served at 7:30 am. in the fellowship hall. The Easter worship at 9:00 a m. will include a choir anthem, "The Risen Christ," directed by Mary Ann Gradeless and accompanied by Lesa Piech; a solo, "I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked," by Wendy Weber. Dr. Saltzgaber's message will be "Jesus' Walk and His Cross." The scripture reading will be by Lisa Brodzinski. Pastor Saltzgaber will also baptize three people. All children will enjoy an Easter egg hunt during Sunday School time. The public is invited to all these services.

SECOND GRADERS REACH THEIR GOAL Mrs. Gurtner’s second grade reading class at North Liberty Elementary met their challenge of reading enough books and completing book reports to reach the principal's office and were treated with ice cream bars. Upon completing a "bookworm" report, the students added to the length of the bookworm which traveled the halls to the principal's office. Congratulations, students on a big accomplishment!
