MARCH 28, 1991 - THE INDEPENDENT-NEWS -
regular session on March 12, in the gym at Walkerton Elementary School. Board members present included Nilas Miller, Dan Patrick, Don Ludwig, Mary Kay Stedman, Dave Hostetler and Jean Ann Beem. The board and 35 observers began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES. A motion was made by Don Ludwig and seconded by Jean Ann Beem to approve the Feb. 19, regular session minutes as corrected. The vote was seven/zero. Corrections included page three, Middle School Project. "Table until the next meeting only" and change "immediately following” to "after much discussion.” Under patron response, insert following "reemphasized that," "in his opinion.” APPROVAL OF CLAIMS 320 ■ 450: A motion was made by Dave Hostetler and seconded by Jean Ann Beem to approve claims number 320 through 450. The vote was seven/zero. PATRON RESPONSE: Persons speaking during patron response included Tom Fair, Ben Smith, Branson Hiatt, Tom Leffert, Nilas Miller. Dan Patrick, Barb Murray and John Wolff. Tom Fair presented information from a meeting he attended with Congressman Mangus. Ben Smith presented the board with a petition signed by patrons concerning tax increases and asked if there were any limits upon taxes. Branson Hiatt addressed matters relating to the affordability of tax increases upon community patrons. Tom Leffert expressed the need for emphasis on instructional quality rather than facilities. John Wolff, graduate of 1983, emphasized the need for quality instruction and continued corporation cuts in materials. Board president Nilas Miller disputed figures presented by Dan Patrick, board member, at the previous board meeting. Dan Patrick supported his original figures. Barb Murray answered Ben Smith's question concerning tax limits. Dr. Murray stated that the General Fund was frozen in 1973. She further noted that year "thaws in that freeze amounted to approximately 5%.” Therefore the board, by law, could only tax to that limit. Dr. Murray noted that further adjustments to state funding cuts would be absorbed through major cuts in all areas with emphasis, unfortunately, placed on personnel. RECOGNITIONS: Marilyn Lightfoot.
