VERY WORTHWHILE CAUSE The recent ice storm that hit Indiana last week caused not only millions of dollars of damage around the north-central part of the state, it also put entire communities without electricity for various periods of time. In fact some communities as well as many individuals still do not have power completely restored as the storm took down electric lines and poles all over the areas. Having to live in today’s world without electricity would be something else for most of us as almost everything we can relate to depends on electricity in some way. Out of a story such as this, there usually is some good news also and many in this area may not be aware of such happenings. The Town of Walkerton’s municipal electric department got involved directly, thanks to the cooperation of the Town Council in letting this happen. Calls for help came from many cities and towns and electric departments and Walkerton, with some good relationships with individuals from Tipton, was quick to respond. Last Wednesday, electric superintendent Jolly Back and Ken Bolze took two of Walkerton’s trucks and headed south for Tipton. Stating that wires at that time had up to three inches of ice surrounding them, it was no surprise to see the many wires down and utility poles that had been snapped off “like toothpicks’’ from the weight of the ice combined also with a little wind. Jolly and Ken worked through Friday and returned home after power had been returned to much of the town, but a lot of work remained for the local crews to finish. The Indiana Municipal Electric Association has a mutual aid policy which at a time such as this certainly is needed and apppreciated. The Town of Walkerton also agreed to pick up the pay, mileage and meals for their two employees, which we think was a very positive action to be taken. It is hard to imagine, without actually being through something like this, just how much outside help can mean. We certainly applaud the Town and its employees for extending this small bit of help to an area that really needed all the help they could get. And we further hope the favor never has to be returned to our area as emergencies such as this can cause a lot more than just hardship and expense for those involved, whether it be a utility, town or individual.
“Scheel Board” The School Board says that the welfare of the children has top priority. I carried a petition recently and the patrons are the people that should be given top priority just as well. The tax burden that’s coming up is atrocious. The taxpayers that are out there will be gone if they go through with all this new spending, 12% the first year, 8% the second. Dan Patrick is the only one they should keep, the rest of the puppets should go. When it comes election day get your butt in there, vote, stand up and be counted. This recent petition, we had 842 signers. There’s another petition in the making for Lincoln, Liberty and Johnson Townships. This School Board never went through a depression. I remember back during the depression there was a lady that came to my parents

door and traded a bar of soap for a bushel of corn so she could make hominy to feed her hungry family. Wake up Board members .... there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. A Polk Township Taxpayer Ed Dolph “The Klee Heard Around The Church” It was a busy weekend but a happy and fun one! It all started Friday evening. Greg, our son, called to ask if it was okay to host a bachelor party at our house. Having been forwarned and having the house a little cleaned, we agreed to go get some food from Ray & Kenny’s. We stopped at Mr. Tee’s for a hamburger. They were good but Roy’s was bigger than mine! Home again to set up and make sure there were no water spots on the glasses. I guess that they had a good time, Roy fell asleep on the couch and I retired to our bedroom to sleep after the news. Saturday was the big day! Mike and Sandy’s wedding! We made it
to the church on time. Pastor Marilyn had a beautiful service and then the wedding kiss. We could tell it had been a well rehearsed kiss. Thanks to Jimmy’s sound control expertise, it was loud and lovely. The caps were an unusual touch, male members of the wedding! The reception was held at Al's, at Koontz Lake. About two hundred people were served by a trio of great waitresses, Phylis, Robin, and Maggie. The food was excellent and Wayne and Elaine did the bar proud. We danced to the smooth sound of the “Midnite Hour.*’ It was a beautiful wedding and reception. Congratulations to Mike and Sandy Ross and only the best of wishes. Sunday morning we had pancakes and sausages at St. Pat’s. They forgot the green food coloring. As usual, the service and food were great. Roy’s family (and I guess after 31 years, mine too) went to dinner at Lea's. Henrietta and daughter Brenda, from Minnisota, joined the family members of Indiana. Mike and Sandy joined the group, hoping to find out where the light bulbs and toilet paper had been hidden the evening before. We had corned beef and cabbage. The afternoon was spent visiting and card playing. Meta and Flora kept us well supplied with food and drink. I'm sure that Kent and David had fun cleaning up after us. The party room was just the right size for a family get together. Walkerton has many fine eating establishments from the quick snack to the formal, to large group dinners. We have local musical groups. I forgot to mention I bought the wedding gift from Kabelin’s, the card from DeJoss and the paper at Hook’s. Walkerton does have everything that is needed for a successful event. We have champion ball teams and we have an excellent band. We just need the people of the area to brag about our town and to utilize it. Sincerly, Nedra Williams “Frieada Os TW Fewth” This year we will celebrate America's 215th birthday as a nation on July 4. Hundreds of people from nearby communities come to Walkerton to enjoy our fireworks each year. The carnival brings people to the park and contributes to the cost of the fireworks. Local industries and merchants have been generous as have the people of the community. We are all Friends of the Fourth. Betty King

FALCONS FALL TO WAKARUSA IN FINALE Urey’s Falcons dropped a sea-son-ending 20-18 decision to Wakarusa in girls’ eighth grade basketball action Monday at the local gym. After a 4-4 deadlock at the end of one period of (May, the Falcons held 11-4 and 18-14 advantages at the next two stops. The locals turned ice cold in the final stanza and fell to 10-5 to end the Falcon’s 1991 hardwood campaign. The ten victories were the most ever compiled by a local middle school girls team. Anittah Patrick paced the Falcons attack with 8 points. Renee Fisher added 4, Tracy Legge 3. Jennifer Hoover 2 and Tabatha Higgins 1. The game scheduled for Wednesday with LaPorte Boston was cancelled due to bad weather conditions.
