Betty Lawson (DSouth Bend) and State Rep. Richard Mangus (R-Lakeville) announced that money for development at Spicer Lake County Park will soon be coming to St. Joseph County. Funding for the projects has been approved by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and final approval is expected from the National Park Service in the near future. The St. Joseph County Park and Recreation Board stands to receive SIOO,OOO for construction of an environmental education center, a maintenance building, additional trails, and a parking area and access road. The money comes from the federal government's Land and Water Conservation Fund. "We at the DNR believe quality local parks are important, and we’re happy to play a part in the process,” said DNR Director Patrick R. Ralston. Ralston says nearly $600,000 will be spent on local recreation projects this year. The DNR has received requests from 18 agencies totaling over $1.2 million. THe DNR’s Division of Outdoor Recreation administers the Land and Water Conservation Fund in Indiana. Money is provided on a 50 percent matching grant basis for the acquisition and development of outdoor recreation sites by local park and recreation agencies Since 1965 more than S6B million has been received by Indiana for park land acquisitions and improvements.
