GLENN TRIUMPHS OVER WARSAW IN TOURNEY 00-02 The John Glenn Falcons made a little more history Saturday and gave the capacity crowd at the Elkhart Northside gym plus thousands of basketball fans who were not in attendance, something to think about when the upset the Warsaw Tigers 68-62 in the opening game of the 1991 Regional Tourney. This was Glenn’s second appearance in the Regionals in three years and the first time they had advanced past the opening game, dropping a first round game to Elkhart Memorial in 1989. The victory upset a lot of anticipation of a Warsaw-Concord rematch as these two teams had met early in February with the Tigers winning a one-point decision on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take the Northern Lakes Conference crown and also advance Warsaw on their way to a 20-1 season record going into Saturday’s play. But the Falcons have been playing very well for most of the past two months and had lost only once since an early January upset to Triton. They also matched up very favorably with Warsaw, who had lost all five starters from last year’s team and actually were one of the real surprises in Northern Indiana this season. The game was close throughout with Glenn holding a slight advantage at all the stops. A crucial point in the game came in the late third quarter when the Tigers coach, Ai Rhodes, opted to give his husky 6’2” center, Ttm Taylor, a rest. Taylor had been doing a consistent number on the Falcons the whole game, drawing fouls and making an occasional basket inside. However, with the score tied at 40-40, Taylor’s replacement. Gay Johnson was in the game, the Falcons really took advantage of the absence of the husky Taylor and pushed the bail inside for three fouls on Johnson and five quick points. Dan Huizenga hit a pair of free throws to break the tie for the final time and Rick O’Connor followed with a lay-in on which he was fouled, converting the three-point play. Rhodes quickly got Taylor back in the game, but the brief time he was out provided the catalyst the Falcons needed to take charge of the game. They went on from here to lead 49-43 after three periods as John Johnson and O’Connor each hit dose in shots to end the quarter scoring after Taylor had put in a three-point play on a lay-in and foul. From here on out, free throws were a big part of the game as both Warsaw and Glenn had reputations of good free throw shooting teams and teams that usually out shot their opponents in the number of attempts at the line. The two teams traded two free throws each as Todd Szymanski and Damon Groves traded points and Jason McKenzie came back with two more for the Tigers. B J. Walls hit a 17 footer and the team continued to trade two points as Taylor got another lay-in. Huizenga put two more free shots home and Taylor then made a three-point play on lay-in and foul shot, cutting the lead to SS-S2, but Kevin Stedman hit a short jumper for the Falcons. PASSING MEN HELP SAVE THE LIVES OF THREE Four men passing-by where the high water is on Indiana 23, north of North Liberty, were the lifesavers for Lora Hansen, of 2401 Michigan Road, Plymouth and her twin one-year-old daughters when their vehicle hit an icy spot on 23 and went into the swampy area. The four men are Dave Blackbum, of Walkerton; Lew Janicki, of Walkerton; Tim Wright, of Mishawaka and D.C. Martin, of Koontz Lake. The incident happened about 10:45 a.m. and the Hansen vehicle was traveling north and crossed the center line into the swamp. The four men waded through the water to the car to pull the victims to safety. They easily extracted Mrs. Hansen and one of the infants from the front scat but had a little trouble with the second twin in the back seat. Water filled the car almost to the top but a one-foot air pocket enabled them to keep the child breathing until they safely removed her. The three were taken to Dr. F A. Engel’s office and xe-paxted uUsx reported there were no injuries, just cold and wet. According to county police a similar incident in which a vehicle slid off Ind. 23 into the swamp in the same general area occured. No injuries were reported in that accident either.
