Tied at 66 al! on a three-pointer from the corner by Plymouth’s Seth Gilmer, the Falcons had juat four seconds showing on the clock after a timeout and the ball the entire length of the court away from the basket. However, four seconds is plenty of time to move downcourt if composure isn't replaced by anxiety and that is just what happened. The inbounds pass to O’Connor found him passing the ball in the forecourt to Dan Huizenga who then returned the ball to O’Connor racing down floor
and he let fly from about two good strides from the 3-point line to win the game. The exdting finish advanced the Falcons to the championship game and sidetracked Plymouth for the year with an 8-12 record. Glenn boosted their record to 18-4 with the victory. This certainly was a game that had two different contests in it. The favored Falcons jumped to a 6-0 and 10-1 lead in the first quarter before the Big Red could get anthing to drop. Glenn meanwhile was playing an almost perfect game hitting their first 10 shots to take a 22-11 lead after one. Kevin Stedman had 10 of these points on four baskets and two free throws. The Falcons continued to dominate early in the second period as Plymouth coach Jack Edison used three timeouts to try and stem the tide. Glenn hit the first six points of the second period and with a three basket run in the middle of the quarter, increased their lead to 38-17 with just 2:26 left in the half. The Pilgrims went to work in the final 1:28 as they trailed 40-19 when two three-pointers by Gilmer plus one free throw and another pair of one-pointers by Dave Roahrig cut the lead to 42-28 at halftime as Glenn could only answer with a pair of Stedman free throws. It was very obvious in the second half that the Pilgrims had been told to attack the basket more and to be more agressive. They came right out and went to work on the 14 point deficit. A Ken Mack back door lay-in opened the scoring and after Huizenga got a short one for Glenn, Mike Large put in another lay-in and Roahrig hit another pair of freebees. Toby Gardner hit from short range making it 46-34, but Plymouth came right back with four baskets in a row, two by Mack and two by Roahrig as they were pressing the ball inside frequently. O’Connor got an out-of-bounds play basket on a short jumper but Roahrig came right back with a three-point play on a fast break lay-in and foul. John Johnson matched this for Glenn and O’Connor hit two more free throws and Glenn again was up by eight. A three-point play by Eric Dumil and a basket by Large just before the gun were sandwiched around a Huizenga lay-in and it was Glenn 55, Plymouth 50 with one quarter left. The Falcons struck first in the final quarter as Stedman hit from in close. This was to be the Falcons last basket until the O'Connor desperation shot at the buzzer, getting only free throws the rest of the way. The Pilgrims kept clawing away at the lead as the Falcons only contributed offensively from the foul line. Finally, the second of a two shot foul situation by Roahrig knotted the score at 63 all with 1:10 left in the game. Walls was fouled with :39 showing on the clock and hit the first of a one and one. With just 15 seconds left after Plymouth had failed to take the lead on their possession, Huizenga was fouled and hit both ends of a one and one, making it 66-63 and setting up the heroics of first Gilmer and then O’Connor. Roahrig, a sturdy but very mechanical 6’2’’ center for Plymouth, led all scorers with 27 points on seven baskets and 13 of 18 from the line. He had double figure held from Mack with 14 and Gilmer with 12. The Falcons were led by Stedman with a fine 20 point performance, 16 of which came in the first half. Huizenga had 15 and O’Connor 14 for the other double figure efforts for the winners. The Pilgrims missed the front end of five ene and ones in this game and only hit 17 out of 29 free throws while the Falcons were hitting 21 of 26 and missing the front end of a one and one only once. Free throws very often make the difference. especially going down the stretch. Plymouth started five juniors in this game and have only four seniors on their roster, two of whom got in this game. Glenn meanwhile listed six seniors on
their roster, three starting and three coming off the bench. However, Glenn also has two freshmen who see a lot of service so both of these teams have a lot to look forward to next year.
