NORTH LIBERTY NEWS By Gladys Sheneman Congratulations goes to Al Killian, of Tyner, who was very pleasantly surprised last Saturday when about one hundred friends and relatives arrived at the Tyner Odd Fellows Lodge Hall to help him celebrate his 80th birthday. The surprise party was hosted by his wife, Gladys, his children and step-daughter. Ruth Dipert. Happy birthday. Al, from all who know you. Gladys Sheneman was very pleasantly surprised when she went to the post office Tuesday and received a letter addressed to Mrs. Santa Gaus, 602 W. Center St., North Liberty, from Eric Shields in Saudi Arabia. I would like to share the thank you note he sent me. He said. "Thank you for the special letter and clippings. You people at the tree farm are all very special to me. I just want to thank you and everyone there for the Christmas tree. It will be an unforgettable experience. If everyone was like you, we wouldn’t have such terrible things going on in the world. Take care and I'll be extra careful just so I can thank you all in person when its over. Best wishes and God bless. ’ ’ Eric is the son of Gary and Sue Sheilds, Walkerton. Eric’s address is CPL Shields, Eric W. 309-86-9206 Rad. Evelyn, and their five sons, Lynn, Dean, Gail, Kenneth and Devon and their families all arrived to help them celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They had a day of feasting, visiting and telling tales of the good times they had enjoyed together down through the years. Some relatives and friends also dropped by to wish them a happy anniversary and they received a lot of beautiful cards from all of their many friends. So sorry to report that John Schaust. Naturalist at Potato Creek State Park, will be leaving soon to take a job at a park in Geveland, Ohio. We sure hate to see him leave as he has worked so hard on making the history and movie possible for all to see and enjoy. They are having an open house for him at the nature center on Thursday, March 7th, so please drop by and wish him well. A large crowd attended the fellowship dinner in the family center at the Church of Christ, Sunday noon, in honor of the 44 new members who have joined the church this past year. Many of you readers remember Daisy and Kenneth Doan when they lived here in North Liberty. I received word from Daisy that Kenneth had a heart attack and is in intensive care in the Rochester Hospital. Daisy said they miss their friends in North liberty. If you send him a card, send it to Rochester Hospital, Rochester, IN 46975. So please remember them at this time. Our sympathy this week goes to Pauline Knowlton in the loss of her husband, Harold and to my neighbor, Jerry, in the loss of his father.
Also to Evelyn Folk, of South Bend, in the loss of her mother, Dortha Miller. 97, who died Tuesday at Miller's Merry Manor. Also remember Martha Clark in the loss of her sister, Dorothy Barr. Dorothy Ruff, formerly of North Liberty and now a resident of Miller's Merry Manor in Plymouth, was very pleasantly surprised last Sunday afternoon when her relatives and friends arrived to help her celebrate her 95th birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Kane and daughter, Marlyn Pugsley, of Walkerton, also attended and all enjoyed birthday cake and ice cream before departing. A cherry baking contest was held Thursday afternoon at the nursing home. Music was furnished by Helen Gundiach at the organ. Judges were Jim Thibodeaux, Dave Behr, of the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce and Gail Suter, of the Walkerton Public Library and guess what, I won first place with my cherry pie. Marie Kerchaert won second place with her cherry cream puffs and Cathy Gilliland won third place with her Washington cherry pie. All present had a little sample of the goodies and got a recipe which was enjoyed by all. Many of you readers know Roy Fenimore, of Tyner. He is now a resident at Miller’s Merry Manor at Walkerton. Sunday callers of Gladys Sheneman were Theda Carlson, of South Bend and Ray and Evelyn Stoneburner, of Plymouth. Many of you readers who attended school at Tyner and had Mable Heim (Cuthbert) for your teacher, will be glad to learn that she is much improved and has written to Evelyn. Her husband had a heart attack 17 years ago. I’m sure she would be so happy to hear from her friends as she was a wonderful friend and teacher. Her address is, Mable Cuthbert, Gilbert Residency, 203 S. Huron St., Upsilanti, Mich. 48197. GLENN AND PLYMOUTH TO PLAY FRIDAY AT 6too P.M. The John Glenn and Plymouth Sectional Tourney game on Friday night will begin at 6:00 p.m., instead of the 6:30 starting time listed here and in other newspapers since the drawing. The Saturday championship game will still be at 7:30 p.m. as previously announced. Glenn, 17-4, enters the tourney as the favorite as they have recorded six victories and no defeats over the other tourney teams, not having played Culver Military. An 8-11 record by the host Plymouth Pilgrims marks a stronger finish after a very shaky start this season. Glenn defeated the Pilgrims on
