Aluminum for the donation and recommended acceptance of the materials. The Falcon 500 Coub donated SI,OOO to North Liberty Elementary School for the purchase of fifth grade boys basketball uniforms. The current uniforms were purchased in 1978 and are now beyond service. Without their help, it would not have been possible to purchase the uniforms even after the school's fundraiser. Mr. Kaufman said the school appreciates this donation, realizes club monies are limited and recognizes their continual desire to assist the schools. Mr. Kaufman recommended acceptance of this donation. The NLES third nine weeks honor roll for grades 4-6 w as just released with 31% of the students listed. OLD BUSINESS 1. Per Diem Dr. Murray reported that she had no further information pertaining to this matter and would discuss it when she obtains further information. 2. Middle School Project Dr. Murray opened this item by saying that the purpose of tonight's presentation was to answer questions that were received from patrons and board members during the meeting in November. Dr. Murray introduced Jack Swindell and Doug Wickstrom from Fanning Howey to give that information. Article 111, Schoolhouse Planning and Instruction Financing. was reviewed in regard to Indiana requirements for middle schools. It was stated that the minimum size for a middle school within the State of Indiana is 12 acres for 300 students, plus one acre for each additional 100 students. With a projected enrollment of 500 students, that would mean that the middle school site would have to consist of a minimum of 14 acres. It was noted that the current Urey Middle School site consists of 4.95 acres. The adjacent park was taken into consideration at 6.25 acres. With the inclusion of the park, the site does not meet state requirements. Other items discussed under the Indiana Code included middle school facilities in terms of class-
room instructional spaces. It was stated that Indiana required for general classroom purposes a minimum of 900 square feet. This is for general classroom purposes, not to include areas such as laboratories, media centers, physical education, and industrial and practical arts areas Those areas require additional space. The current analysis of the current middle school in comparison to the program designed by the school corporation during the initial stages of the feasibility study resulted in a square footage shortage of approximately 62.4b4. Therefore, in order to provide a minimum, but typical program for middle school children in today’s educational setting within the State | of Indiana, it would be necessary to increase the square footage within the current middle school program to 62.464 feet. Other areas discussed included plumbing. Reports given to the board indicated that some areas of Urey Middle School were not up to code, such areas as shower systems, kitchen, toilet fixtures and science areas. In addition, heating systems and ventilation system were stated as 27 SOFFIT & FACIA H 4 VANDERHEYDEN H EAVESTROUGH SERVICE J Call 288-7719 L THREE D CAMPGROUND 750 E., Grovertown (219) 867-8432 Pavilion Vioec Games Elec Water. being inefficient in terms of cost and utilization. The boiler was evaluated as being in poor condition with a recommendation to consider replacement with a more efficient unit. Exhaust systems in the art area were considered undersized and not proper for ventilation space. Ventilation areas in industrial arts and the kitchen were aIsAT under standards. Additional information indicated that in order to renovate the present Urey Middle School to get all facilities up to standards with addtiional square footing, an estimated cost for such would be a little over $10,006,000 and that would also be only in the event that the state would approve

the location which does not meet state minimum standards in terms of size. It was noted that the renovation cost of slightly over $10,000,00 was very close to the same cost as projected in earlier feasibility reports for a new building. Other information indicated that the approzimate geographic center of the school district was northeast of Walkerton at the intersection of approximately north Thom Road and the Marchall County line The student population center is south of that area approximately half way between Ist Road and the Marshall County line.
