FALCONS SCORE IMPRESSIVE WIN OVER MARIAN The John Glenn Falcons recorded one of their most impressive wins of the season Friday night as they came from behind to defeat a big and competitive Marian team 72-67. The Falcons raised their season record to 14-3 with the victory while Marian slipped to 9-6 playing a strong schedule. The game was close all the way as neither team could pull away from the other. A 10 point total on five baskets by Kevin Stedman in the first quarter kept the visiting Falcons in range as the hosts moved to a 17-15 first period lead. Marian continued to hold the lead at the main intermission as they again outscored the Falcons by two, making it 33-29 at halftime. Rick O’Connor had seven points in the second quarter to top the Falcons effort. Marian came out strong in the third as in the first two and a half minutes moved to a 41-34 lead, giving the appearance of possibly pulling away. However, the Falcons then combined a drive of their own with some turnovers and less intense play by the Knights to move to a 47-43 lead by the end of the quarter. The string actually reached a 15-2 margin in the opening minute of the fourth quarter as Glenn scored first and led 49-43. Then it was a case of both teams scoring well, but Marian forced to foul later in the game in an effort to catch up and sending a Gordon Mosson coached team to the free throw line usually is bad news for an opponent. This was no exception. The Falcons outscored their hosts 25-24 in this quarter with 10 of the points coming from the free throw line. They attempted 13 in this final quarter and freshman guard Jason Groves led the way from the charity line with a perfect six of six in the final stanza. Stedman had nine big points in the quarter as did Goralski for Manan, but the Falcons managed to hold their lead for the victory. Stedman took game scoring honors with 24 points on 11 baskets and two of two from the line. O’Connor added 21 on eight baskets, three of them 3-pointers, with two free throws and Walls reached double figures with 10. Marian got all their points from five players as Goralski ended with 18, M. Kloska 15. Hobik 14 and White 12. 2 Big Game* Thia Weekend This weekend the Falcons will have two important games. Friday night LaVilie will visit for a key Northern State Conference game. A victory by Glenn will assure them of at least a tie for the conference crown while a loss would leave La Ville and Triton with only one loss each in confernce play. Tipoff for the B-Team is 6:30 with homecoming activities also on the schedule for this evening. On Saturday night the Falcons will visit the Plymouth Pilgrims for a game that will give a little indication of what to expect in a few weeks in the sectional tourney. Plymouth, with another losing season this year, is improving and last Friday night pushed the talented Warsaw Tigers to overtime before (Continued on Page 12)
