GIRL SCOUTS ENJOY CHRISTMAS PARTY The generosity of many people helped the Walkerton Girl Scouts carry holiday spirit beyond their own Christmas party. On Monday evening, 60 girls and Girl Scout leaders amassed a van load of food and gifts for a less fortunate family. Girls in all local troops have been saving money earned by extra chores all autumn. Last week they learned the ages and genders of the family's children so they could buy appropriate gifts. Part of Monday's party time was spent wrapping these gifts. Leaders had a gift for the mother. As the girls arrived for the party, they filled grocery bags with food items brought from home. To this they added "a turkey with all the fixin’s,” bought with $47.00 raised at the Fall Festival hot dog sale, underwritten by Ray & Kenny’s SuperValu. A half barrelful of non perishables was donated by Ray & Kenny's customers; one anonymous giver enclosed cash in an envelope addressed to "Girl Scouts.” Ray & Kenny’s also provided a gift certificate. In the end, so much food was collected that four grocery bags full were sent to the Community Pantry, in hopes that other needy people can have a nicer holiday. To protect the family’s privacy, their identity was known only to a local minister and the Girl Scout Service Unit Manager. During the party, the Service Unit Manager delivered the food and presents. Later she was able to tell the Girl Scouts, back at the party, that the family was pleased with their gifts. Special guests at the party included Singing Sands Council president, Barbara Dodson and, of course, Santa Claus. Some area merchants provided goodies for Santa to distribute: Five Star (40 apples, 40 bananas), Kroger of Plymouth (hot chocolate, candy, apples and oranges), Ames of Plymouth (candy canes) and Ray
& Kenny’s SuperValu (hot dogs). The Walkerton Girl Scouts are deeply grateful to all "Santa Gaus Helpers” who helped make their Christmas party enjoyable, memorable and meaningful.
