A WARNING OR A SCARE? Well, December 3 has come and gone and we are still sitting on solid ground. Os course the predicition of a major earthquake along the New Madrid fault, was for or around December 3. 1 guess time still exists for this to happen. However, we look at such predictions as this as almost foolhearty. There has never been any scientific proof of anyone having a formula to predict any kind of a natural disaster to a specific time. Yes, they say it will happen probably within 100 years, but setting aside December 3, 1990 as the date was what we consider just a wild guess. Iben Browning, of New Mexico, predicted the major earthquake due to atmospheric conditions that were due that hadn’t appeared to this degree since 1812, a year that did have severe earthquakes. His thoughts were not backed by those of the business of studying and monitoring earthquakes however, and this left him pretty much alone in his convictions. The sad part of it is, the gullible public who can easily grab hold of any such thing as this. This is the bad news of the recent predictions. The good news is that the predicition did make the public, gullible or not, more aware of a situation that could and someday surely will appear. If a bit of serious prevention and caution can come of this, it has served some good purpose. However, the near panic and actions in many areas that resulted, have a very negative attitude. In some areas schools were closed Monday. In many others attendance was way down as parents evidently kept students at home. There were cases cited of young children behaving very oddly, fearing the worst may happen to them and their families. And of course, there are those who are always available to take advantage of given situations, as insurance people made fast plays to sell earthquake insurance, one as far away as in Michigan doing a lot of business with this predicition as the incentive. it appears that for the present it is all over. It is something that can and will happen sometime, but as far as one individual calling the shots . . . just don’t believe it. There hasn’t been one yet on this earth who could do that.

THE FIRST SNOWFALL It’s the first snowfall of the season and as I look out the window at the fluffy flakes coming down, I am both happy and unhappy. On the down side, I am reminded of all the jobs that I have put off that need to be done, and Christmas shopping is not one of them. I always wait until two days before Christmas to shop. The plastic needs to be put on the windows (I usually wait until the wind is really blowing up a storm). I promised the cats 1 would make them a cat house, so that they don’t have to come in our house. They will probably get a house made of hay bales. My office needs cleaning out so that I can donate my samples to the Church Pantry. I always give a few hat samples to the nursing home. There are many things that can be done to make it a bit nicer for other people at this time. I have final paperwork to be done and a few cards to be mailed. I should make cinnamon rolls and cookies. With all of this work to do, what do 1 do? I do best, looking out the window watching the snow come down! We have a new weather forcaster in our home, Fred the wooly worm (so named by granddaughter, Catherine), and after eating his home of cabbage, Roy wanted to keep it to find out what it turns into. I supply it daily with water and a new leaf of cabbage. All that I can see it doing is eating and sleeping. As for its ability to predict the weather, it does as good as the meteorologists on television, always changing! With the decorations going up in town and the stores it is starting to look like the holiday season. I'm sure that 1 can do almost all of my shopping in the area. There are gift certificates to be purchased at the local restaurants. I'm seriously thinking of buying a generator for Roy. I enjoy the furnace working in the winter.

The Band Boosters are doing a great job selling food out at Stuntz and Hochstetler Pines, even with putting up with me in the kitchen. With this snow coming down, it will be an even more enjoyable time to go out and look around at the goodies. Remember before you rush out to the malls to shop, stop and look locally and buy locally. You’ll save gas and you will be helping out our local businesses. Well the snow is coming down harder and 1 had better get this into the paper. Sincerely Nedra Williams

GIVE A GIFT OF LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING At this moment, hundreds of foreign exchange students worldwide will never be granted the opportunity to follow their dream of studying in the United States, unless you help. What is deterring these 15-18 year old high school students from realizing their dream is quite simple; they need a host family to provide a caring and loving home, a home just like yours, for 5 months (second semester), or 9 months (school year). Please take a minute to consider your family as a host to one of these well deserving youngsters. These young ambassadors, presented by the Youth Exchange Service, are eager to share their hopes and dreams, as well as trading their cultural knowledge with your family. YES students provide their own spending money and are covered by exceptional accidental/ medical insurance. No value can be placed on the educational prosperity of intercultural understanding that evolves between host family and student.
