JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES Regular Session CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL. The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on Tuesday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at Urey School. Board members present included President Nilas Miller, Mary Kay Stedman. Don Ludwig, Gene Knowlton. Dan Patrick and Jean Ann Beem. Dave Hostetler entered the meeting at 8:30 p.m. after attending the Middle School Spell Bowl contest. The board and 36 observers opened the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Following discussion and corrections. a motion was made by Gene Knowlton and seconded by Jean Ann Beem to approve the minutes of the October 2 regular and executive sessions. The vote was six to zero. PATRON RESPONSE: 1. V.F.W. representative Randy Verkier petitioned the board to replace a plaque recognizing members of the John Glenn community who served in World War 11. They responded that Mr. Verkier should see Dr. Murray for information needed to pursue the plaque. RECOGNITIONS: Marilyn Lightfoot, principal of Walkerton Elementary School, recognized her PT A for their efforts in serving the Walkerton Elementary School. In addition. Mrs, Lightfoot indicated that there was a record number of parents who signed up for the PTA this year.

She also thanked those parents helping with the Book Fair that occurred this week. Mrs. Lightfoot also stated that the Chapter One Take Home Computer program has started off successfully and that parents and students receiving the program were enthusiastic. Brent Kaufman, principal at North Liberty Elementary School, recognized that North LibertyElementary School hosted Grandparents Day. He indicated that a record number of 295 grandparents attended that day out of 331 students. Superintendent Barb Murray, speaking on behalf on Dick Reese, principal at Urey Middle School, said that the Urey Spell Bowl team was competing in the District Spell Bowl Contest in Triton. In addition. the Urey PTA Citizens of the Month for September were AmyPaul and Bill Emerick. Amy is an eighth grade student and daughter of Harold and Linda Paul of North Liberty. Bill is also an eighth grade student, son of William and Diane Emerick of Plymouth. In addition. Dr. Murray reported that Urey Middle School wanted to recognize three gentlemen for giving their time and energy to the students at Urey Middle School. Roger Dittmar was recognized for volunteering as cross country coach to determine whether an interest was strong enough to recommend a cross country program for the next school year. One final recognition included the seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams at Urey Middle School who played in a volleyball tournament at Knox on October 13. Both teams were "runner-ups” to South Central. Principal Mike Shuler reported that the John Glenn High School Spell Bowl Team placed first in their division again this year and they are waiting for results to see if they will attend state competition. In addition, Mr. Shuler congratulated the band for their division first place at Elkhart at the ISSMA State Marching Band contest. OLD BUSINESS: 1. Job description, athletic director. A motion was made by Mary Kay Stedman and seconded by Jean Ann Beem to accept the revised job description submitted for the position of assistant to the principal in charge of athletics. The vote was six to zero. 2. Feasibility study. Architect Lee Brockway of Fanning/Howey Associates gave an overview of the findings and recommendations of the feasibility study conducted by Dr. Ted Kowalski of Ball State University. At that point the Board of School Tustees opened the floor for discussion from patrons, administrators and board members.
