FALCONS LOSE OPENER TO CLAY 88-76 The John Glenn Falcons opened the 1990-91 basketball season Friday night at South Bend Clay and fell to the Colonials by an Bft-7b score. The Colonials had won their opening game a couple of days earlier and were ready and able from the start. Clay jumped to a first quarter lead of 26-15 behind some hot shooting and a balanced attack as seven different Colonials shared in the first period. They still led by five, 43-38 by the main intermission. However. Gordon Mosson's crew were not out of this game and a big 24 point quarter cut into the Gay lead to the point of catching up only to fall behind by two, 64-62 at the end of the quarter. Seven baskets and 10 free throws got the Falcons back in the game as they were definately in charge of play at this point. However, after the two big quarters. Mike Wolff spearheaded the Colonial charge in the final period with 12 points, including two three-pointers as the Colonials pulled away for the win. Wolff ended the night with 31 points on 14 baskets and one free throw, including the three-point-ers. Damon Hairston, Damani Woods and Chad Johnston each reached double figures with 13, 12 and 10 respectively. Glenn was led by Kevin Stedman with 21, Rick O’Connor 17, Kevin Winger lb and B. J. Walls 11. Phy Twice Thia Weekend The Falcons will play on the road twice this weekend with a trip to Culver on Friday night for their first NSC game and Saturday will visit Oregon-Davis. Every community, regardless of size, has in its make up a number of organizations, each sponsoring various projects for the betterment of the immediate community. Some of these groups go one step further and do their bit toward state wide projects and a few even contribute to nation wide projects. When it comes to local activities, these groups with the same goals join forces and all do their share toward making the event a huge success which is a wonderful thing for any community. Each group was organized to perform specific functions for the betterment of all, and with this in mind, it would be financially impossible for all groups to contribute toward every project that comes along as much as they would desire to do so. That is one of the main reasons one finds so many organizations in one community, so more fields can be covered. Since Epsilon Chi Giapter of Tri Kappa was incorporated in Walkerton thirty years ago, many have asked. “What is Tri Kappa?” Some have also been of the opinion that any Greek Letter group is strictly a social organization Tri Kappa is far from that. It was founded in 1901 in Indianapolis and incorporated eight years later. The object of Tri Kappa is to “bring women into close, unselfish relationship for the promotion of Giarity, Culture and Education.” All three of these are included in each Chaper's program in order to achieve perfect balance. Tri Kappa is a state-wide organization which has grown steadily and there are now over ten thousand members in the state. In the field of Charity, the needs of each community dictate the services given locally. This group spends thousands of dollars annually to build and maintain hospital rooms, provide dental clinics, and given needed therapeautic equipment. On the state level, Riley Hospital at Indianapolis, is one of the sorority’s chief interests. Tri Kappa is also active in the Mental Health Program. Combined funds from the chapters have been used as an outright grant for research; to purchase a bus for children’s excursions at Laßue Carter Hospital; and for scholarships to students in this field. Through the years, support has also been given to the Northern Indiana Hospital for Crippled Children and to the Rockville Sanatorium, to enumerate all of Tri Kappa's gifts would be a monumental assignment, let us just say that in service, we have found many rewards. In the field of Culture, the Indiana State Symphony Association is supported both by state and individual chapters. State funds are used to purchased tickets, given to college music students, hospital patients, welfare agencies and youth groups. Money is also given for symphony maintenance. Most of the chapters support either the Indianapolis or local community concerts. Tri Kappas are proud of their own art collection housed in Brown County and frequently on view at art shows throughout the state. Nearly 85 per cent of the chapters hold patron memberships in the Salon, while chapters in the northwest section of the state are very active in the Northern Art Patrons Association. Epsilon Chi contributes annually to the John Glenn Area Fine Arts Committee, John Glenn Aerial, Hoosier Art Salon. Community Arts A Crafts and the Friends of
the 4th. to name a few. "As charity reflects the pioneer Hoosier percept of caring for our own and as culture reflects our aesthetic appreciation, so education represents our hope and belief in the future.” Since the very beginning, scholarships have played a vital role in Tri Kappa. Combined chapter and state scholarship is our single biggest (in terms of dollars spent) and most important (in terms of scope) work in Tri Kappa. There are three kinds of chaptersponsored awards available each year: General, Special, and Fine Arts. General scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors only and Special scholarships are given to students who have completed at least one year of college. The Fine Arts awards alternate each year between the fields of art and music. Additionally, a Nurse’s Award and the T. Fleming Memorial Scholarship are given annually and are rotated among several Indiana colleges. The Wilson Award is awarded annually to the State Tri Kappa Scholarship student who has achieved the highest grade index after the completion of the spring term. The Beryl Showers Holland Fellowship of SISOO and the Journalism Award of SIOOO are annual awards given. Also, Tri Kappa established a Memorial Fund which gives emergency aid to women students in 17 accredited colleges in Indiana. As it is impossible for state awards to reach every city and town, most chapters provide at least one annual scholarship award in their own community . Epsilon Chi presents three awards at the high school level and two $50.00 bonds for eighth grade students. A total of SI6OO is given at the high school level. Since its organization, our local Tri Kappa Giapter has financially contributed to the Northern Indiana Art Salon, Norman Beatty Beauty Shop, state-wide mental health program. Miller’s Merry Manor, John Glenn Area Fine Arts Committee, Hoosier Art Salon, John Glenn Aerial, Community Arts & Crafts, Friends of the 4th, as well as contributing funds for needed dental care, hearing aid, clothing, canned goods, musical instruments, industrial park, town Christmas decorations, Walkerton Ambulance Fund, Marshall-Starke Development Center, etc. Tri Kappas are a hard working group and every cent each chapter earns must be accounted for to the purpose for which it is designated and used for no other purpose. As each group grows, more can be done locally and state-wide for Culture, Charity and Education. What is Tri Kappa? There is no single answer! CREATING ANCIENT ART North Liberty's upper elementary students are traveling the globe, the artistic globe, that is. Art students in grades 4. 5, and 6 are creating various drawings, paintings, and sculptures reflective of acient culture’s art. The students’ most recent trek is to Rome. Fourth graders recreated a 2’x3’ wall mosaic of an original Roman design. The Romans employed the art of mosaic, assembling tiny tiles into a large picture or scene. Our mosiac features a Roman street musician playing his tambourine. This project and its predecessors have given North Liberty students a world class ticket to art appreciation.
