If Disaster Struck Today Are You Prepared? If a disaster struck today, would you be prepared? Would you have enough supplies to last for several days? Would you know how to get your family to safety? Would you know how to administer first aid if your child were hurt? If you're unsure of the answers to any of these questions, please call your local Red Cross chapter today. We'll give you all the information you need to prepare for the worst fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, you name it. it could be the most important five minutes you spend in your life. Not to mention your child’s. For more information call the Red Cross 234-0191. Get ready for anything . . . anytime . . .anywhere. ARE YOU READY FOR AN EARTHQUAKE? Here's what you can do to prepare for such an emergency: PREPARE A HOME EARTHQUAKE PLAN Select a place everyone would meet following an earthquake. Designate an out-of-town familymember or friend to be your family contact person . . so that each of you can call him or her to say you’re safe or to relay messages. Conduct periodic earthquake drills . . . and review your Home Earthquake Plan now and then. Make these simple improvements around your home — Strap the water heater to a wall. Bolt bookcases and other tall, heavy furniture to the wall. Put bolts or latches on cabinet doors. Learn first-aid and CPR. PREPARE AN EARTHQUAKE SAFETY KIT Assemble an Earthquake Safety Kit by including first aid kit, fire extinguisher, canned food and a can opener, bottled water, sturdy shoes and work gloves, extra blankets and trash bags, essential medications, battery-powered radio, a flashlight and extra batteries - don’t use candles, douse all fires. Also include in the kit written instructions on how to turn off your home utilities. WHEN THE SHAKING BEGINS If you are inside, go only a few steps to a safety spot you have already picked. It could be a heavy desk or table you could crouch under (and hold on to) to be safe from falling objects ... or just an inside corner of a room. Pick a spot away from windows, bookcases, or tall, heavy furniture that could fall on you. If you live in a high-rise building, don’t be surprised if the fire alarms and sprinklers go off during a quake. If you are outside, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees and power lines. If you are in a car. drive to a clear spot (as above) and stay in the car until the shaking stops AFTER THE SHAKING STOPS Be prepared for aftershocks. Check people for injuries. Give first aid. Inspect your home for damage. Listen to the radio for instructions. Go to a Red Cross shelter if your home is unsafe

On Wednesday, November 21. the North Libedrty sixth graders enjoyed the annual Thanksgiving feast. The students brought in all the refreshments themselves and the teachers provided a fabulous beef stew. Everyone had the opportunity to share a few Thanksgiving traditions, as well as. what Thanksgiving means to them. As part of the festivities, the sixth graders donated their lunch money to Hope Rescue Mission, which is located in South Bend. On Tuesday, the 20th, they had the opportunity to tour the Mission along with learning what the purpose of the Mission is. It was an eye opening experience for all. Hope Rescue Mission has many needs, we encourage the people of our community to contribute generously to this worthy organization. Check utility lines and appliances for damage. If you smell gas. open windows and shut off the main gas valve. Then leave the building and report gas leakage to authorities. Don’t re-enter the building until a utility official says it is safe. If water pipes are damaged, shut off the supply at the main valve. Emergency water may be obtained from such sources as hot water tanks, toilet tanks and melted ice cubes Check to see that sewage lines are intact before flushing toilets. If electrical wiring is shorting out, shut off current at the main box. Check chimneys for cracks and damage. Unnoticed damage could lead to a fire. The initial check should be made from a distance. Approach chimneys with great caution. Stay out of severely damaged buildings. Aftershocks can shake them down. Stay off the telephone, except to report an emergency. Turn on your radio or television to get the latest emergency information. Don't go sightseeing Respond to requests for assistance from police, fire fighting and relief organizations, but do not go into damaged areas unless your assistance has been requested
