WALKERTON TOWN BOARD MINUTES The Walkerton Town Council met at 7:00 p.m. on November 5, with the following members present: Cheryl Rizek, Maggie Gaddis, Walter Heil and Leonard Jaske. Cheryl Rizek, vice president, called the meeting to order. The minutes for the regular Town Council meeting, held Oct. 15 were approved as read. The minutes for the special Town Council meeting, held October 24 were approved as read. There was no citizen’s input. Ambulance: Rizek told the council that she had been contacted by the ambulance service in regard to the training school that begins November 13. There have to be fifteen participants in order to hold the class, and only twelve people have enrolled. The cost per person is $225.00 and the ambulance service is asking if the Town will pay the tuition for the three remaining openings in the class. Ten of the new trainees are from Walkerton, and Rizek feels that we need as many trained EMTs as we can possibly get, to counteract any personnel turn-over. Normally trainees are reimbursed for tuition, after working for our service for six months. There was some discussion of funds remaining in the school catagory of the ambulance budget, and the council felt that some of the tuitions could be divided between 1990 and 1991’s budgets. Walt Heil made the motion to pay a total of $675.00 for the three openings in the class. Seconded by Len Jaske. Carried. Rizek complimented the ambulance personnel for the good job they did in cleaning and fixing up the ambulance bay. A letter from Century 21 offering the Town first rights to purchase a strip of property was read and discussed. This vacant lot is currently being used for EMT parking, and is leased for one dollar a year for that purpose. In addition, the Town maintains this property and clears the snow from behind Harvey's Dime Store for the use of this lot. The Council thought that the asking price was too high, and decided not to purchase. Police Chief Gassensmith gave the Council his monthly report. Gassensmith said that he had seen an article in the paper about a new junk car ordinance in Osceola, that has stood up in court. He asked the Council if they would consider this same ordinance, with a few modifications, for Walkerton. Attorney Holmes is going to review Osceola’s ordinance and make a recommendation to the Council. Gassensmith also reported that people have been very co-operative about not burning their leaves, and there haven’t been any recent complaints. Attorney Holmes again told the Council that they are not at fault by prohibiting leaf burning. State law prohibits burning, and no town has the authority to give people the right to bum. The students learned about how the Pilgrims and the Indians rejoiced and celebrated after a good harvest. They held religious services with prayers and worship. Each child made their own teepee and decorated it with the Indian symbols that they learned in class. Melanie Schmeltz brought in a teepee and an Indian girl for our Indian reservation display. Whitney Borton brought in a beautiful, very soft, rabbit hide. The children all felt the hide and talked about how it was used for bedding and clothing.
