WALKERTON TOWN BOARD MINUTES The Walkerton Town Council met in a special meeting on October 24, 1990 with the following members present: Maggie Gaddis, Gregory Williams, Walter Heil and Leonard Jaske. Superintendent Back, Jeff Zehner and clerktreasurer Judy Hiler were also present. No member of the press or the public attended the meeting. Williams reported to the Council that the County won’t loan or rent out their leaf vacuum equipment. Williams also said that Zehner had given him some literature on a leaf vacuum system that attaches to a truck. The main unit of this vacuum system would cost approximately $6,500 and the box of the dump truck would have to be enclosed or we would have to purchase some sort of trailer. It was felt that there

isn’t enough time this year, to purchase a vacuum system and make the truck enclosure. A leaf vacuum system will be researched for use in future years. State law strictly prohibits most outdoor burning. Council members stressed the fact that leaf burning is not allowed in Walkerton and offenders may be ticketed. Bagged leaves, that are set by the curb, are picked up the the Street Department. If anyone wants leaves for garden mulch, the Street Department will deliver them within a three mile radius of town. The Council acknowledged the problems that the elederly, who are on fixed incomes, have when it comes to raking and bagging leaves. A distribution of free bags to senior citizens was discussed. Williams pointed out that this expenditure from the Motor Vehicle Highway Fund will mean that a cut will probably have to be made in the purchase of sand or some other supply for the Street Department. The Council decided to purchase 2,000 lawn and leaf bags to be distributed to residents who are age 60 or older. Len Jaske made the motion to allow the purchase. Seconded by Maggie Gaddis. Carried. The bags are to be paid for out of the Motor Vehicle High-
