In the hills of Western North Carolina is an unlikely place to find an expert on kangaroos, but this turned out not to be true for Hal and Betty Hevel, local residents of St. Pete and part-time residents of Western North Carolina. Betty and Hal received a gift of a can of soup as a joke from their friends, John and JoAnn Hughes. They unearthed a native tarheel, Ms. L. Wheeler, who had conducted a study on kangaroos while visiting her son in Australia. She assured the Hevels that the contents of the soup can belonged to a rare species of kangaroo known as the suque’re’. The suque’re’ inhabits a small area of Australia that is part of the out back region. They are almost extinct, with only two documented sightings. To think that one of these rare and lovely animals would be reduced to soup, is not only horrifying, but incomprehensible, so says our native expert. Although the can itself seems fairly common, there is reason to believe that it is a forgery produced solely to disguise its rare contents.
