FALCONS TO HOST RENSSELAER IN SECTIONAL FRIDAY The John Glenn High School football team will host Rensselaer Central High School in the second round of the IHSAA Football Sectional. The game will be played on Friday, Oct. 26, starting at 7:30 p.m. The gates will open at 6:30 p.m., and admission is $3.00 for both students and adults. Girl Scout Cookie Sale To Begin Soon there will be a Girl Scout at your door! From Nov. 9 through Nov. 25, all Walkerton Girl Scouts will be taking orders for cookies. This year they offer seven varieties. The classic favorites - shortbreads, chocolate mint and peanut butter sandwich cremes - will be joined by some newer, more exotic confections. For many of the girls, the cookie sales are their first experience in business. They learn responsibility, sales technique and money-management. They gam self-respect as they learn the importance of “following through” on a project. And they develop pride in helping to fund their own activities. The nationwide “Right To Read” service project is funded by this sale. Local activities rely heavily on the cookie funds, bringing the girls career education, scholarships for summer camp and field trip fees for needy troop members. The new cookie varieties are: Forget-Me-Nots: tender vanilla cookies, topped with caramel and pecans, in a rich chocolate coating. Dutchess: tender vanilla cookie, topped with caramel and toasted coconut and chocolatey stripes. I’m A Natural: a seven-grain cookie sweetened with fruit juice and honey and livened with walnuts, raisins, apple bits and spices. A soft cookie with no refined sugar. Dutch Apple Bars: smooth cookie batter surrounds a moist, chewey cinnamony apple and raisin fruit filling. Individually wrapped in packets of two. The Girl Scouts are a nonprofit, community-minded program. They deserve the support of the public. When a girl Scout knocks at your door in a few weeks, please realize that your cookie order is helping a very worthwhile organization. NOTICE Jim’s Barber Shop. FALCONS WIN; RENSSELAER NEXT THIS FRIDAY HERE The John Glenn Falcons advanced to the second round play in the 1990 Football Sectional on Friday night as they defeated the Marian Knights 14-0. The Falcons scored on the first play of the game from scrimmage and their defense took over from that point, holding Marian to a total of only 17 yards for the game. The win raised the record to 7-2 for the year as the Falcons will host Rensselaer on Friday night in the second round of sectional play. Marian bowed out for the season with an 0-8 record, the second straight year this once football power has gone winless. G Statistics M 18 First Downs 4 276 Rushing 17 134 Passing 0 17 Passes Attempted 12 11 Passes Completed 0 1 Had Intercepted 1 2 Punts 36 Average Yards 40 3 Fumbles 0 0 Fumbles Lost 0 110 Yards Penalized 50 It just took seconds for the Falcons to get on the board. On the first play from scrimmage after receiving the opening kickoff, Dennis Kaiser broke one right up the middle for 75 yards and a touchdown. Rick O’Connor ran the extra point try and the Falcons had an 8-0 lead. The rest of the first half featured the Falcon defense who time and time again shut down the Knights in whatever they attemped. For the game Marian never completed a pass in 12 attempts and they stiffled any running attempts, holding the ground game to just 17 yards. In the meantime, the offense of Glenn was able to move the ball in the middle of the field, three times in the first half penetrating inside the Marian 30, but were unable to captalize on these opportunities, partially due to their own mistakes as the Falcons were flagged for a total of 110 yards in penalties in this game. The second and final score of the night came in the third quarter on Glenn’s second possession of the half. Rick O’Connor got in the end zone on the end of a drive thanks to a 41 yard pass and run play from quarterback John Johnson. A run for two more points was no good but the 14-0 lead was safe with the Falcon defense still dominating play. For the game Glenn gained over 400 yards but were their own worst enemies with the penalties that often stopped a drive. Kaiser ended with 96 yards in six carries thanks to the big play at the start of the game, and a fine night by O’Connor ended up with 125 yards in 23 carries, 3 pass receptions for 49 yards and one TD. Host Rensselaer Friday In the second round of sectional play, Glenn will host Rensselaer. Last year the Falcons defeated Marian in the opening round game and lost to Rensselaer on the second round. The same match-up awaits this year as the Rensselaer team defeated la Ville 28-14 Friday night after La Ville had taken an early 14-0
