The Town of Walkerton has received a Community Focus Fund Grant in the amount of $160,800 from the Department of Commerce of the State of Indiana. The grant award will be used for the "Walkerton Downtown Renovation Project". which will include new curbs and sidewalks, new street lights, trees, planters, benches and brick walkways along the 600 and 700 blocks of Roosevelt Road. In addition, a new sidewalk will be constructed along the west side of Michigan Street to connect Roosevelt Road with the Five Star/Ist Source Shopping Center. “These

public improvements are the same that were first identified by the downtown development plan of Bonar and Associates of Ft. Wavne". said Daivd Behr. Executive Director of the Walkerton Industrial Fund and the author of the grant applicaiton. "The Bonar Report was the backbone of this gram application, and it gave the technical support to our request for funding." The Bonar Report, published in 1988, was paid for by the original WIN Campaign by the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce. In addition to the public improvements paid bv the State, the Town
of Walkerton will contribute up to $36,000 of labor to demolish and remove the deteriorated sidewalks and make wav for the improvements. The Chamber of Commerce will contribute up to SS4,(XX) for Facade Improvement Grants as part of this program. The Chamber has already started on this program with the improvement of Budd’s Bargain Barn. Preferred Auto. Ray & Kenny's and Pavey Insurance. Additional buildings will be included vet this fall and next spring. It is expected after bids are sought and awarded that the actual reconstruction of the downtown sidewalks will begin next spring. The Walkerton Redevelopment Commission, who is already guiding this fall's facade renovations, will be the main agenev coordinating the grant dispersement next spring. “The cwperation between the Town Board. Redevelopment, the Chamber and the Downtown merchants has been excellent." said Behr. “Greg Williams, of the Town Board, used his knowledge of state gran’s and town finances to make this program both workable and a"rac’ivc to the State. We are all confident that this grant will result in a beautiful and strengthened downtown that all of Walkerton can be proud of. It will be in keeping with our new entrance signs that we will keep our "touch of the pas’" while being "in touch with •he future." OUTLET SHOPPING BUS TRIP The bus will be leaving at 8:00 a m. on Tuesday. November 13. from the Presbyterian Church parking lot. We will visit the following stores: Sara lee. November 3. from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds. Members arc required to bring their animals for weighing and identification.
