Allow 8 weeks for delivery. YOU AND YOURPET Dear Dr. Wist: We have just adopted the cutest little bundle of energv. a 10-week-dd puppy we’ve named Jake. He'll be indoors most of the time so he needs to be house trained. Can you give us some help, some suggestions on house training him? Answer: Congratulations! A new puppy is a big responsibility. bu» it's also a lot of fun. House training is the first major obstacle to overcome. In fact, it is essential. Pa'ience is the key because it will take a while to get Jake to realize that he is suppose tn go to the ba'hroom outside. Unlike cats, who will instinctively eliminate in a drv loose substance such as kitty litter, dogs must be taught where they're suppose to go to the ba'hroom. Your puppy does not care where it eliminates when it gets the urge. It just knows it need to go. Dogs are known as man's best friend because they are always trving to please us. You can take advantage of this characteristic. Take Jake outside on a leash frequently and walk him long enough that he goes to the bathroom. When he performs, praise him and perhaps give him a treat, that is give positive reinforcement. Walk him after each meal and nap and many times in between and repeat this reinforcement. At

first, it is just by chance that he goes outside, but in time, he will perform outside because he wants the rewards. Jake wants to please you. He needs much more praising than reprimanding. But when he d»H?s eliminate in the house and you catch him in the act. let him know wi’h a g<tod. stern “no” that vou arc no' pleased. If the "accident” happened some time earlier, he will not understand the reprimand because he won’t remember elimia'tng. I' also win do no good to rub his nose in 'he unng or use physical punishment. You can sec. it takes a long time to train a puppy. The job can be complicated if everyone works because a puppv cannot hold its urine and stool for eight hours. You mav need help from a relative. If no help is available, you can confine Jake in a small space during the initial phase of training. Instinc’ will tell him not to soil the area where he is plaving. You should realize that there is nothing wrong with using a cage between plavimes. during short trips or even a’ night. I hope this information helps and that vou and Jake are beginning wha* will be a long, happv relationship. If you have a question about your pet. write to Dr. Wise. D.H., Bowling Green. Kentucky. Answer: This "weeping” can be prevented bv adding slightly cooled scalded milk to egg mixture which will reduce baking time. The waterv laver is caused when protein in milk and eggs shrinks and •he liquid portion seperates. Be sure not to overbake the custard.
