COMMUNITY SCREENING A community screening program for breast cancer in women will begin October 1. during National Breast Cancer Awareness month bv the Cancer Society of St. Joseph County. “The Gift of Caring,” a cooperative project cosponsored and underwritten by the Cancer Society of St. Joseph County and area radiology groups, will offer women 35 or older the opportunity to have a mammogram, or breast imaging

done at reduced rates. For 525.00 anyone can purchase a “Gift of Caring” certificate entitling the purchaser (if a woman over 35). a friend or relative, to a mammogram screening check at any participating radiology center. The primary purpose of the screening project is two-fold: education and early detection. Any woman who is a resident of Si. Joseph County, is 35 years or older and has exhibited no signs or symptoms of disease, is eligible to purchase and/or use the certificate. The Cancer Society of St. Joseph County expects to offer the program through the month of October.

Anvone interested in purchasing a "Gift of Caring" certificate should contact the Cancer Society. A volunteer will work with each purchaser to assure that the woman has an attending physician. Women who do not have a physician will be referred to one of the area’s referral agencies for a physician.
