J.G. Volleyball Tourney Sot For Saturday, Oct. 6 The John Glenn Volleyball Invitational tournament will be held on Saturday. October 6. beginning at 9:00 am. This will be a round robin tourney with Jimtown, Knox, Oregon-Davis and the host Glenn team competing. The order of matches will begin at 9:00 a.m. between Jimtown and Glenn; 10:15 a.m., Knox versus Oregon-Davis; 11:30 a m.. Jimtown versus Knox: 12:45 p.m., Glenn versus Oregon-Davis; 2:00 p.m., Jimtown versus OregonDavis and at 3:15 p.m., Glenn versus Knox. (Starting times may varv due to length of matches.) Concessions will be available as follows: pop, coffee, hot dogs, candy, snacks and chili available in the cafeteria. No drinks in the gym. Admission for the tourney is $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students, for all day or any part of the day. The championship team will receive a trophy determined by the most wins. In case of a tie. the team allowing the least number of points will be the winner. COOKIE SALE SATURDAY Walkerton Business & Professional Women’s Club will be sponsoring a “Cookie Sale.” on Saturday. October 6. during the Pumpkin Festival. The booth will be at DeJoss Pharmacy, downtown Walkerton. Each member is to bake 3 dozen cookies for the sale. If members do not bake, a monetary donation is expected. BOOK SALE There will be no story hour this Saturday at the Walkerton Library. The library wilt be having its book sale for Fall Festival Days. There will be many books on sale including quite a few children’s nonfiction books. Hard back books are 10 cents and paperbacks. 5 cents. The sale will be Friday October Sth. 9:30-5:30 and Saturday. October 6th. 9:30-12:30. Children's books go fast so come early for a good selection, plus many adult books too. GIRL SCOUT HOT DOG BOOTH For the Great Pumpkin Festival. Ray & Kenny’s SuperValu is again sponsoring a hot dog booth in the store to benefit local girls. The Girl Scouts Walkerton Service Unit will use the profits in various ways. This fund raiser will cover field trip fees for needy troop members and help reimburse troop leaders for postage, long-distance calls and similar operating expenses. Girls, leaders and parents will operate the booth from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. As the Service Unit benefits all Walkerton troops. Rose Eby asks all Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts, and their parents, to help “mind the store.” Call Rose at 586-2645 to volunteer an hour of your time. Team captain Lori Clark helps Christopher Grimmer and Melanie Children in Mrs. Houston’s reading class recently baked “wonderful" little gingerbread boys. They invited Mrs. Caus’ morning kindergarten class for gingerbread cookies and a puppet show which was presented by limothy Applegate. Christopher Grimmer. Melanie Schmeltz, Dustin DeMan and Eric Fisher. Everyone had a wonderful time. DINNER MEETING The Koontz Lake Conservation Club will hold a dinner meeting on Saturday, at the clubhouse, with Margacet and Ed Moravek as hosts. TWO MORE MEETS Urev cross-country team has two more meets. Thursday. October 4. • hev will travel to New Prairie and on Tuesday. October 9 at LaVille. Both meets will begin at 4:30 p.m. NOTICE The October meeting of the Oregon Township Club of the Starke County Extension Homemaker program will be held at the Koontz Lake Conservation Cub. on Tuesdav. Schmeltz make wonderful gingerbread boys. PUBLIC MEETING ON WOMEN’S ISSUES On Wednesday. October 17. the S’. Joseph County Commission on the Status of Women will hold a public meeting to receive public comment on social and economic issues confronting women and their families, at the Walkerton Presbyterian Church. 512 Georgia St. St. Joseph County Citizens arc invited to attend and share their concerns with Commission members. Free child care will be provided. The Commission was created in August 1987 by the County Council and County Commissioners to monitor and enhance the status of women. Its specific responsibilities are to develop recommendations to eliminate sex discrimination in all spheres of community life: develop programs which will facilitate this process; develop recommendations for service which will enhance the role of women and assist them in making maxium contributions to the world around them and monitor the implementation of these programs and recommendations. Five thousand dollars of Local Road & Street money has been set aside for the installation of new sidewalks, on a matching funds basis. The Town will pay half the cost, and the individual must pay the other half. The matching funds program is strictly for residential sidewalks. New sidewalks, where there are none, and applications with the earliest date will be given first priority. Applications can be filled out at the Clerk-Treasurer's office from now until next March All applications will be reviewed by. and acted on by the Town Council. The Tow n Council also reserves the right to make all final decisions in choosing those sidewalks to be done. 2t04 BAKE SALE Bov Scout Troop 293 and Cub Pack 293 will be having a bake sale on October 6. from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Ist Source Bank, by 5 Star and at Farmers State Bank, across from Ray & Kenny’s The money will be used to help fund up coming scouting activities.

Jr. Miss Tea Set For Oct. 4 In Walkerton The Walkerton JC's will hold a tea for anv senior girls from John Glenn. LaVille and Oregon Davis who are interested in participating in the 1990 Walkerton Area Young Woman of the Year (Jr. Miss) scholarship program. This informational meeting will be held at John Glenn High School in the Home Ec. room at 7:30 p.m. on October 4. Parents are encouraged to attend. Anyone who plans to be in the program but cannot attend should contact Gene Knowlton at 586-3086 or Tom Coffey at 586-7731 before October 4th. Polk Township 4-H Awards Night October 11 Polk Township 4-H awards night will be held October 11, at 6:30 p.m. A traditional pot luck supper is planned at the Community Building, in Tyner. All families of 4-H members are invited to attend. Meat and drink are provided with families bringing table service and a covered dish. After the meal an awards program is scheduled to include awards for clean pen from the fair, county achievement awards, ten year awards, eight year aw ards and yearly pins to all members. After the awards are presented there will be a slide show with slides from the fair this year. All members and their families are encouraged to attend. NORTH LIBERTY' PT A October is "North Liberty PTA Literacy Awareness Month.” At our October 18th meeting, at 7:00 p.m.. we will have a guest speaker from the St. Joseph County Literacy Council. The topic is learning to help others with reading. Our Fall Book Fair will be October 18 to October 24. It will be in the school cafeteria from 9:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:00-3:00 p.m. each day. The class that buys the most books will win free books for their classroom. PTA will hold it’s annual Fun Fair on Saturday, October 20, from 5-8 p.m. in the school gym. New this year at the Fun Fair you can arrest your friends at the Jail game. Also last years favorite Wet Sponge Toss game where students had fun trying to wet the face of good sported teachers. There will be a variety of many other games to be plaved with lots of new prizes to be won Hot dogs, chips and pop or coffee will be available in the cafeteria for families wishing to have their dinner at the Fun Fair. The winner of PTA's drawing will be announced, first place is SIOO.OO, second place is $50.00, and third is $25.00. Also for the child that sells the most tickets a $50.00 gift certificate from Child ren’s Palace. Please come out October 20 to the school and play some games, win some fun prizes and support vour North Liberty PTA You may still join PTA. dues are $3.00. Grandparents mav join October 16th on Grandparents Day at school.
