LONG RUN AND DEFENSE PACES FALCON VICTORY A thrilling 90 yard kickoff return hv Rick O'Connor on the opening kick of the second half, broke a scoreless tie and along with a defense that forced a lot of Jim town fumbles, led the John Glenn Faicons to an 8-6 victory over the Jimmies in the opening game of the 1990 season Friday night. Plaved on the Jimtown field, the Falcons lost the battle of statistics but made the big play and recovered five Jimtown fumbles to hold off the always strong Jimmies in a Northern State Conference game. The first half ended in a scoreless tie. The big kickoff return bv O’Connor stirred things up earlv in the second half and after a two point conversion on a pass from John Johnson to Rvan Peterson, the Falcons had an 8-0 lead with just 11 seconds off the clock. Jimtown came right back to score. Thev drove 50 vards in five plays with Carl Battice capping the drive with a 17 vard scoring run. The Jimmies w ent for two points on a run but fullback Bruce Helbling was stopped inches short of the goal line and Glenn maintained their lead 8-6 with 9:24 left to plav in the third quarter. Despite the fact that neither team scored again, the thrills were certainlv there as Jimtown time and time again moved well into Falcon territory onlv to turn the ball over on fumbles. The Falcons covered five in all. stopping drives time and time again, the final time in the shadow of the Glenn goal posts in the dying minutes of the game after Jimtown had gained a first and goal from the one. A five vard penalty and then a fumble ended this late threat and preserved the victors for Dennis Rippy and his Falcons. Visit Knox Friday The Falcons will visit the Knox Redskins on Friday night. The Redskins edged Glenn and Bremen out for the conference crown last vear and a g»x>d game is expected on the Knox field with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The Scoring GLENN: Rick O'Connor. 90 vard kickoff return; PAT: Ryan Peterson, pass from John Johnson JIMTOWN: Carl Battice, 17 yard run; PAT: run failed Score By Quarters Glenn 0 0 8 0 — 8 Jimtown 0 0 6 0 — 6 ing as a hobby began after the Chicago World's Fair of 1933-34.
