IVY TECH OFFERS HOST OF SEMINARS August 24 is the registration deadline for a variety of business and industry seminars Indiana Vocational Technical College will offer this fall at several locations throughout the northcentral region. “Math Skills for Electronics I” will be offered 11 Thursdays. August 30 through November 8. 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the South Bend ivy Tech campus. 1534 W. Sample St. This basic math course is tied closely to solving electronics problems, introduced as soon as related mathematical principles are presented. Among the topics covered will be the decimal system, exponents, powers of ten. scientific notation, roots and powers, fractions. linear equations, factoring. DC circuit analysis. KirchofTs laws and Ohm’s law. The instructor will be Jerry Soleta. The course is limited to 25 participants. “Travel and Tourism I” will begin August 28. 6:00 to 9:50 p.m. at Ivy Tech’s South Bend campus. The 16-week course will also be offered from 5:45 to 9:45 p.m. at Travelmore. 3300 East Center St.. Warsaw. The two-course, twosemester program introduces students to the functions of a travel agency. Students will learn how’ to reserve domestic and international airlines, cruises, car rentals, hotel accommodations, charters and tours and will learn effective sales and customer service skills through role play. "Industrial Blueprint Reading with Math Review" begins August 28 from 6:00 to 9:50 p.m. at John Glenn High School, Walkerton. The 8 week class, limited to 25 participants, is a basic course for those who want to become more familiar with reading and interpreting industrial blueprints. Students will review and apply math appropriate for print interpretation and learn to read engineering symbols and drawings in regard to shape, perspective, dimension and fabrication. "National Electrical Code” will prepare students to take the city or county electrician's licensing exam. Special attention will be given in the course to recent revisions made to the Code and will place an emphasis on calculations for the exam. The course will be offered 15 Mondays beginning August 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. in Room 156 at Mishawaka High School. 1202 Lincolnway E.. Mishawaka. The course will also be offered at Ivy Tech’s Elkhart campus. 2521 Industrial Parkway 16 Tuesdays. 6:30t09:30p.m. beginning August 28 and at Ivy Tech Warsaw - Lakeview Middle School. 850 E. The instructor for the Elkhart and Warsaw classes will be Bud Swathwood. “Power Engineers Test Review" will prepare up to 25 participants to take the Indiana Association of
Power Engineers exam. Topics include styles of boiler, combustion of fuels, boiler installation and operation, pumps and valves, steam turbines and auxiliaries and DC electricity. Ed Keve will instruct the class held 32 Mondays and Thursdays 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. beginning August 27 at the Ivy Tech South Bend campus. "Basic Statistical Process Control" is a program for top/middle management and supervisory personnel. engineers, quality control personnel, salespeople, those in customer service, accounting, purchasing and production. It will be held four Mondays beginning August 27. 6:00 to 9:50 p.m. Students will gain a basic understanding of statistical tools for long and short production runs and the management philosophy necessary for the successful SPC program. A base for basic implementation of an SPC program in-plant, the program will be led by Gary Murray at Ivy Tech’s South Bend campus. "Fluid Power Basics," covering the basic concepts, principles and applications of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, will begin August 30. 6:00 to 9:50 p.m. at Culver Community High School. Culver. The 16 week program is limited to 25 participants. Instructor Ron Gcik will focus on the utilization of air and hydraulic cylinders, valves, pumps, hoses, accumulators and filtering systems as used in industry. "Emergency Medical Technican Basic" will begin August 28. 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Ivy Tech in South Bend. The 40 session program will be taught Tuesdays and Wednesdays by Mike Hargreaves. The program prepares participants to take the state certification test for FMT-A and is limited to 25. It involves textbook study, lecture and practical experience in the care and transportation of the seriously injured and ill. The course will also be offered at Ivy Tech Warsaw . Lakeville Middle School Mondays and Thursdays beginning August 27 for 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. Sue Bechtold will teach the program offered in Warsaw. RELEASE 0-D BOOK RENTAL CHARGES The Oregon-Davis Schools book rental charges will be: Kindergar’en - $21.68. Grade 1- $50.00. Grade 2 - $49.62. Grade 3 • $46.10, Grade 4 - $36.16. Grade 5 - $34.76. Grade 6 • $42.23 and Grades 7 through 12 • $45.00. Book rental assistance forms will be available for those who may have needs in this area at registration. In compliance with state law. any student enrolled in school for the first time is to furnish the school with a written immunization history accompanied by a physician’s certificate or other documentation. No child by law is to be permitted to attend school for more than 30 davs beyond the date of enrollment unless this information is on file with the school. If accident insurance is desired, the cost of students in grades K-6 will be $5.50. The cost for students in grades 7-12 will be $12.00. Coverage for the entire vear (24 hours per day for 365 davs) may be obtained at a cost of $52.00 for students in grades K-12. Due to change in IHSAA coverage, athletes will be required to have student accident insurance or a notice of family coverage. The school cafeteria will serve lunches beginning August 21. Lunch tickets for the coming year will be $.85 per day for students in K-6 and $.90 per day for students in grades 7-12. Extra milk will cost $.25 each. gram will be available at registration. In addition to lunch, the elementary will be serving break fast. The cost per day is $.75. Those students qualifying for free or reduced lunch will retain that status for breakfast. The reduced cost is $.25. Orientation for teachers new to the Oregon-Davis Schools will be at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, August 17th. All teachers should report to the High School Cafetorium on Monday. August 20ih. at 8:00 a m. Classes for all students will begin on Tuesday. August 21st. Classes will be from 8:00 a.m. until 3:10 p.m. Kindergarten classes will meet from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. for the morning class and 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. for the afternoon class. A child must be five years of age on or before August 1. 1990, to be eligible for Kindergarten and six years of age on or before August 1. 1990. to be eligible for first grade. All elementary children will receive notification of classroom assignment at registration. All new children to the school corporation will be screened in reading during registration time. If your child is a Kindergarten student that has not been screened he or she will be screened at this time also. Sixth grade students will be attending Camp Tecumseh (near Delphi. IN) on September 6 & 7. More information will follow.

ENJOY PICNIC The Oregon Township Club of the Starke County Extension Homemaker Program had a picnic at the Koontz Lake home of Josephine Ivancevich on July 10. ( o-hostess w as Geraldine Cobb. The 18 members present answered the roll call with “How did you spend the 4th of July?" Vee Shogren gave devotions and a short business meeting was led by President Doris Vasil. At the Starke County Fair, Geraldine Cobb gave a demonstration on china painting; Mary Omiecinski exhibited a flower arrangement and Doris Vasil, Helen Cowood and Josephine Ivancevich w ere w atchers. The next monthly meeting will be at Stuntz & Hochstetler Pines, on August 14. Members will meet at 12:30 at the parking lot of the Koontz Lake Conservation Gub and car pool, bringing a sack lunch with them. New members are welcome. The majority of cats weigh between seven and twelve pounds. Pierre Biancnard and his paying passenger, Dr. John Jeffries, completed the first crossing of the English Channel by balloon on Janu•ry 7. 1785
