SYMPHONY POPS AT FIREFLY SAT., AUGUST 4 The Firefly Festival and the South Bend Symphony Pops Orchestra will celebrate their tenth anniversary of concerts at St. Patrick’s County Park on Saturday, August 4. at 8:00 p.m. The park will be festooned in birthday party fashion, and free birthday cake (frosted with firefly designs, of course) will be served. Conductor Newton Wayland has programmed an “Anniversary Extravaganza” that will highlight favorites from Pops performances throughout Firefly’s first decade, including Tchaikovsky’s sure-fire crowd pleaser, the “1812 Overture,” complete with pomp and ryIn Houston, Texas, Wayland’s “1812 Overture” is an annual tradition performed for thousands and televised to many more. Houston Symphony Orchestra stage manager Don Jackson built the cannons used there, and will be bringing them to South Bend this summer for the. Firefly Festival concert. Area volunteers will be the costumed “cannoneers” who pantomime lighting the cannons with their torches. (The actual charges are set off by electrical signals triggered by a musician following the score.) Wayland’s musical talents are as varied as his inventive programming. The Santa Barbara. California native is a conductor, composer. arranger, and pianist. He began his career with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, attended Harvard and the New England Conservatory of Music, and became an arranger and pianist for Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, where, in recent years, he has returned as a guest conductor. He has also written music for television, including PBS’s Emmy Award-winning children’s show “Zoom!" and the respected “Nova" series. His talents are in demand throughout North America, and he made his European conducting debut this spring with the Orchestra National de Lyon. Some of the maestro’s programs have been immortalized in recordings which include arrangements written and premiered in South Bend, for Wayland has a special relationship with musicians in the area. Throughout his decade of commuting to Michiana, he has recognized and encouraged the talented composers, arrangers, and soloists in the area, often using South Bend as an incubator for original musical creations that are later performed across the country. The August 4 concert will include arrangements by Pops trombonist Larry Dwyer and tubist Jerry Lackey, as well as a surprise piece commissioned by Firefly in honor of the tenth anniversary, composed by Wayland. Dwyer. Lackey, and violist Zeal Fisher. In addition to the" 1812 Overture.” the program will include Gould’s “American Salute.’ Mangione’s “Feels So Good, Berlins “Alexander's Ragtime Band. Morrow’s “Night Train," Layton s “After You’ve Gone." and a Beatles medley, along with other pops favorites and a few musica surprises. An engaging entertainer who
