WNDU anchor Mike Collins will be on hand to greet the audience and tell them what’s in store. From 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., children will be able to visit with performers and try out a variety of activities. At 5:00 p.m., the audience will be invited to come take a seat to enjoy a performance by the magical illustrated Theater Touring
Company from Evanston, Illinois. Kidfest” chairman Rosamond Byrd and her committee of volunteers have planned a bigger-than-ever variety of hillside activities. Children will be able to make prints, masks, musical instruments; blow bubbles; and learn mime from members of the Illustrated Theatre troupe. They will also have a chance to listen to the wonderful tales of story-teller Orlando Johnson. Johnson caught the story-telling bug more than twenty years ago. and has performed throughout the United Slates for young and old in conjunction with Afro-American Heritage Month. Juggler Alan Eisenberg will be on hand to dazzle with his sleight-of-hand. and members of the Notre Dame football team will be at Kidfest to visit and lend a hand as families move from one activity to another. At 5:00 p.m.. The Illustrated Theatre Company will take the stage to present four stories. Using a minimum of costumes and masks, and a technique called "transformational mime.” the company acts out not only the characters in ’he stories, but the props and scenery, as well. One actor might be a person waking up. and another the alarm clock. The three actors dance, clown, bounce, and tumble their way through favorite fairy tales and original stories told from a child’s point of view. At Kidfest, they’ll perform the Grimm Brothers’ "Cinderella” and "The Fisherman and His Wife.” as well as two comtemporary tales. “Gertie Goes to the Mall.” and "Basketball George Goes Boom." Spell-bind-ing and inventive, the company delights audiences of all ages. Over the past six years, the troupe has performed for over half a million children and adults, from California to Florida to Massachusetts. They have appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and will take part in the International Children’s Festival at Wolf Trap latef this summer. At Kidfest, everyone has an opportunity to meet the artists, learn about the arts, and enjoy the world of the imagination. According to Firefly’s president of the board. Helen Hepler. "We like to think that by bringing live performing arts to young people, outdoors, in a casual, welcoming setting, we are helping to create the audiences of tomarrow.” She also notes that generous grants from The Chase Manhattan Corporation and Target Stores have helped to underwrite the 1990 Kidfest. "Grants like this help us meet our goal of keeping ticket prices low so that the arts are affordable and accessible to all.” Tickets to Kidfest are $3 for anyone over the age of two. Box offices: Century Center. South Bend. 219-284-9111; Templin’s. Elkhart, 219-293-0343; Majerek’s Hall of Cards and Books, Niles, 616-683-1689; and LaFortune Center. University of Notre Dame. 219-239-8128. The Firefly Festival is held at St. Patrick’s County Park. 50651 Laurel Road. South Bend. Parking is free, and assistance for disabled persons is available. If the performance is moved indoors due to bad weather, an announcement will be made on City Line at 674-0900 (in Niles or New Carlisle. 239-2640) and on local radio stations. The Firefly Festival’s goal of bringing quality and diversity in the performing arts to the broadest possible audience is assisted by generous community and foundation assistance and support from The Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Alligators can dose their ears just as camels can close their noses. The Amazon is too wide at many points for a person on one bank to see the opposite shore.
