NORTH LIBERTY BY GLADYS SHENEMAN The 1940 graduating class of North Liberty met Saturday afternoon at the Community Building for their 50th class reunion, with 19 members attending out of 32 graduating in 1940. They came from California. North Carolina. Texas. Montana. Kansas. Michigan. Illinois and 10 were present from the local area. The class sponsor. Carmen (Parker) Fitters, from Jacksonville, Florida, surprised them with a phone call and each class member said hello to her. A good time was enjoyed by all reminiscing about the good old days they had together while attending North Liberty High. Lovely refreshments were served. POMPEIAN BEEF KEBOBS I'A pounds beef round steak 4 small onions, 1 % inches in cut into 1 *4 inch cubes diameter and parboiled 5 H cup Pompeian extra Virgin minutes Olive Oil 8 ripe firm cherry tomatoes 1 cup red wine 8 large mushrooms 'A cup finely chopped onion 1 green bell pepper cut into 8 2 cloves garlic, minced squares 2 teaspoons Pompeian Red 1 red bell pepper cut into 8 Wine Vinegar (optional) squares 1 teaspoon salt 1 zucchini, sliced into 1 inch ‘A teaspoon freshly ground pieces black pepper 4 cups cooked white or 1 teaspoon dried thyme saffron rice ‘4 cup minced fresh parsley (optional) Marinate beef cubes overnight in first eight ingredients. Preheat broiler. String the meat alternating with vegetables onto skewers. Brush with marinade and broil about 4 inches beneath heat for 5 minutes on each side. Brush marinade at least 3 times while cooking. Serve on a bed of rice if desired. Sorinkle with minced parsley. Makes 4 servings. St. Joseph Hospital. Mishawaka. Gladys Sheneman entertained the following friends Monday afternoon and also helped Francis Slattery celebrate her 94th birthday. Those present were Aletha Croy, Mae McDaniel, Pearl Newcomb. Martha McCrosky, and Iva Pommert. Birthday cake and dessert was served before they departed. Frank and Mary Rauen. of Monett, Missouri, are here visiting his mother, Ethel Rauen and on Monday evening his sister, Joan Holmes, gave a dinner in honor of Frank’s birthday. They attended the alumni banquet on Saturday evening and attended his 40th year class get together at Enid Liggett’s on Saturday afternoon. They will return home Wednesday. Remember back when Charles Williams and his wife, Anette, were owners of the restaurant in downtown North Liberty. His mother. Dorothy Cook, was seen in the restaurant a lot. Well, re-

member her and her family at this time as she is seriously ill, after undergoing heart surgery in Saginaw, Michigan. Sunday. June 10. the Olive Branch United Brethren church, with Don Dennie, pastor, will hold the 8:30 sunday morning service out at Potato Creek, at the Peppermint Hill picnic shelter. Everyone is welcome. Over 100 attended the Memorial Day service on May 27. by the St. John’s Lutheran church. Last Thursday, Gladys Sheneman accompanied Clell and Marian Fouts and their house guest, Harold Rust, of Greenfield, on a sightseeing trip to Michigan. They enjoyed breakfast at Glenda’s Restaurant, in Edwardsburg and then called on Earl King, at Painter’s Lake, who operates a marina with his son. He was a former neighbor of Harold’s when he lived on Road 6. near Walkerton. They also called on Gell's sister. Helen, who lives a Saguany Lake. On the way home they
called on Marion and Dorothy Wolff, at Hamilton Grove, near New Carlisle, and by that time it was time for Clell to get home and feed his chickens. The North Liberty Fourth of July Committee is planning the annual parade, so please help them out by singing up to be in the parade. Their theme this year is "Remember When.’’ Well. I will remember those good old days when Claude and I would decorate a float and be in the parade. Remember when Claude shot a chicken to the moon and when we barbequed chicken and even had a big golden egg once. Our sympathy this week goes to Pa' Mortakis and her family, who’s mother. Bernice Farrar, passed away on Thursday morning at Pat’s home. She lived to be 92 and was loved by all w ho knew her. Garv and Madelyn Nelson attended their alumni banquet, on Saturday evening at the Shipshewana School. Madclvn’s class of 45 was honored and all are still living, which is a record. Mr. and Mrs. Gail McDaniel spent the weekend with their daughter, Cathy Wiyrick and family, in Bryon. Ohio, and attended their granddaughter's graduation exercises on Sunday afternoon. The Greene Twp. Lions Club are gening ready for their annual Strawberry Festival this Saturday. June 9. from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Plan now to attend as they do a great job in the community. There will also be a flea market. Proceeds will go to Camp Millhouse. Martha McCrosky and Francis Slatterv spent from Thursday till Sa’urdav at the home of Roseland McCain, in Delphi. On Friday 15 relatives arrived to help Francis celebrate her 94th birthday and all enjoved a wonderful day together. The North Liberty-Greene Alumni Banquet was held on Saturday evening. June 2. at the Holy Family Social Rmm with 530 amending from many different states. The oldest graduating class honored was the class of 1915 and those present were Ruth Cullar, Francis Slattery and M. D. Whitmer. They all received a lovely plant. There were 17 in the class 75 years ago and there are s'ill five alive. 12 are deceased. Vive Wilcox is in a nursing home, in El Paso. Illinois and Lura Pommert is in Miller’s Merry Manor, in Walkerton. Many other classes were given recognition. A delicious dinner was enjoved followed by a program and then dancing. Did you know that North Liberty School's first high school was s'art cd in 1898 in the upstairs of the North Liberty Grade School, which was located where 5 Star s'ore is located today? JUNE 23 The North Liberty United Methodist Church will be having a fish fry. in the social hall of the church, on Saturday. June 23. from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. The fish will be fried by the Tyner 1.0.0. F. Lodge and the dinner will be an all you can eat event. Prices are $5.00 for adults, $2.50 for children 10 years and under and children under five, free. NORTH LIBERTY READING PROGRAM The North Liberty library will conduct a summer reading program entitled "Wild About Reading" from June 4 thru July 31. Both readers and pre-rcaders may participate. "What To Make For Summer Fun" is open to all school-age children. For a listing of the library’s summer programs, please visit or call 656-3664. graduates Jennifer Price graduated from Tri State University, in Angola, on May 19, with academic honors, with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and biology. Jennifer is the daughter of Eugene and Nancv Price, of North Liberty. JOHN GLENN TENNIS CAMP The 1990 John Glenn summer tennis camp will be held July 9-13 where campers will be instructed in the basic fundamentals of tennis. A tournament will be held the last day of camp with trophies being presented to the winners in each age group. All participants will received a participation ribbon. Each camper is to furnish their own racquet, shoes and clothing. A $3.00 fee is required to cover awards and tennis balls and this is payable the first day of attendance. To register call 586-3148 before June 15. Late registrations will only be considered if openings are available. Grades four to six will meet from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. and tenth to 12th grade will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The last day the tournament times will be posted with the awards presentation to follow. Moss only grows on the North side of trees in open, dry country, not in the forest or on lowlands.
