TOWN BOARD NEWS (continued from Page 1) assessment. The town’s budget order from the State Board of Tax Commissioners, recently arrived, was reviewed by the Council. In July of 1989 our assessed valuation was $8,990,337. and after reassessment is now $10,061,000. The amount of money budgeted in each fund remains the same as was approved at our budget hearing last fall, but our rate has been reduced in each catagory. Genera! Fund, Budgeted amount $472,013.00, rate was $2.9433. rate is now $2.66500. Cumulative Sinking Fund, budgeted amount $15,222.00. I.«K?al Road & Street Fund, budgeted amount $40.681.00. Motor Vehicle Highway Fund, budgeted amount $61,870.00. rate was $.0446. rate is now $.03980. Park & Recreation Fund, budpeted amount $24,511.00. rate was $.1769. rate is now $.15780. Cumulative Capita! Improvement Fund, budgeted amount $20,777.00. Cumulative Capital Development Fund, budgeted amount $9,244.00. rate was S.OBOO. rate is now $.07140. Federal Revenue Sharing Fund, budgeted amount $3,424.00. Totals: rate was $3.2448. rate is now $2.93400. NEW BUSINESS: Superintendent Back told the Council that the 2 college students, who work for us as summer help have started work. Back asked the Council if their wages can be increased from $5.00 and hour to $6.00 an hour and also asked if he can hire a temporary man to fill in for Kent Van Dyne. It was decided to keep the pay for part time temporary employees at $5.00 an hour. An increase for 1991 will be considered at budget time. Back asked if he should start getting some prices for paving streets this summer. After some discussion on replacing and installing sidewalks, it was decided that Back should solicit three quotes on a price per foot basis for cement for sidewalks. Back is also going to determine which streets need repairing the most. Once it is determined how much money should be set aside for sidewalks, we will advertise for street paving. Resolution No. 1990-B was read. Walt Heil made the motion to accept. Seconded by Cheryl Rizek. Carried. RESOLUTION NO. 1990-B Be it resolved by the Town Council of the Town of Walkerton. St. Joseph County, State of Indiana. that it is desired and deemed necessary for the Water Operating Fund to transfer a total of $8,037.26 to the Water Cash Reserve Fund, in monthly installments. These monthly transfers are to clear up a deficit balance in the Water Cash Reserve Fund, and are to end in December. 1990. Adopted this 7th dav of Mav. 1990. Gregory A. Williams, President Cheryl A. Hiler, ClerkTreasurer The Council also agreed to allow a monthly transfer of $2,218.01 from Water Operating to Water Bond & Interest to offset water bond and coupon payments which arc due in July, 1990 and January, 1991. A total of $17,744.09 is to be
transferred. A sizable increase in workman’s comp insurance premiums was reviewed by the Council. Len Jaske is to contact our insurance agent about the increase and report back at the next meeting. The Clerk is to solicit quotes for workman’s comp insurance to see if we can get lower rates. The Clerk had received a complaint from a woman who said that people are continually blocking her driveway. Attorney Holmes advised that a ticket can be issued to cars parked in a driveway, or to cars that arc blocking a drivewav. OLD BUSINESS: Williams said that the Town has received an application to join the Chamber of Commerce, and membership dues would be $120.00. Walt Heil made the motion to join the Chamber of Commerce. Seconded by Maggie Gaddis. Carried. Williams suggested that a committee, of Council members, meet with Ruth DeSimone to discuss the financial details of the property that’s being considered for a new well site. The engineering firm that is doing the working on the water project consider this to be a g(M>d well site, but further studies and tests will have to be done. Williams signed a grant application for improvements to the Adams Street/CSX Railroad crossing. Williams said that a newspaper article made it sound like the town had paid the $50,000 settlement in the Eddinger suit. In fact the Town’s insurance carrier agreed to the settlement and paid the $50,000.00. Town Court activity and losses were reviewed and discussed. Cheryl Rizek told the Council that someone has volunteered to donate paneling for the ambulance bav. and someone else has volunteered to install it. Len Jaske made the motion to accept these donations of paneling and labor. Seconded by Walt Heil. Carried. Attorney Holmes stressed the importance of not burning anything in Town. He said the EPA is really cracking down on offenders. Another notice is 10 be put in the paper, reminding residents that they can not burn leaves or anything else. SUSAN URBIN NAMED WOMAN OF THE YEAR Walkerton Business and Professional W'omen gathered at the Walkerton 1.0.0. F. Hall for the season finale meeting. The Evening Star Rebekah ladies served a delicious chicken and noodle dinner to over 40 ladies. One of the highlights of the evening was the announcement of the Woman of the Year award by Iva Cark to Susan Urbin. Judy Scott was a guest. Vericc Walz read the treasurer and secretary reports along with a thank you note. At awards night at John Glenn High School it was announced that Angie Rohrer was a scholarship winner. The birthday bank was donated to by Ann Daley. Mvrl Dixon. Barb Osowski. Patty Kcnnedv. Carolvn Kellv. Verda Karn. Darlene Pontius. Vylet Baker and Vada Stull. Mrs. Stull received the birihdav prize. Mrs. Clark then made the announcement of Susan Urbin being named the Woman of the Year and the two other candidates. Linda Rclos and Karen Johnson, each received a long stemmed red rose. A “show and tell" time was enjoyed with everything from clothing to a picture of an American Mountain lion being shown. Special door prizes of handmade pot holders and crocheted hangers, made by Martha Mull, were presented to Barb Osowski. Darlene Pontius. Vickie Clay and Sue Shields.
