Benefit For Burned Out Family April 28 On Saturday morning. April 7. at 12:09 am.. a fire raged through the home of Sam Pointon and his family, completely destroying the home and its contents estimated at 80-90,000 dollars. The family got out of the burning house without injury, but Sam was rushed to Memorial Hospital. South Bend, bv Walkerton Volunteer Ambulance with severe chest pain and difficuliv breathing. Walkerton Vol. Fire Department acted swiftly and expert Iv but was unable to save his home. In their efforts two firemen were overcome bv smoke inhalation. and one hv carbon monoxide poisoning. They were also taken to Memorial Hospital b\ the Walkerton Vol. Ambulance. Other Walkerton Ambulance personnel remained on the scene with hxal police, with oxygen. blankets and first aid supplies until the fire was brought under control. As if the loss of their home and belongings were not enough, the Pointons had absolutely no insurance to help cover the things that can be replaced. So in an effort to help the familv recover part of their loss, the area churches. local police. Walkerton Vol. Fire Dept., and Vol. Ambulance Service, along with the help of Town Board members, and town employees arc working together to put on a benefit on April 28. The benefit will consist of Port-A-Pit chicken from 10a.m. until 2 p.m. at the fire station on Washington Street in Walkerton. A rummage and bake sale will be held at the Youth Building, (next d<M>r to the fire station), starting at 8 a m. until 4 p.m. if you have household items or clothing, that you would like to donate to this worths cause, they can be dropped off at the Water Treatment Plant, on Adams St., behind Mahones s Chevrolet, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. If you have something vou would like to donate but do not have a was to move it. call the Walkerton Police Station at 586-3511 or the Water Treatment plant at 586-3613, leave vour name, address, and phone number and sou will be contacted and arrangements will be made to pick up vour donations. Iva Kring, REAL Services Site Director, Retires FJ Isa Kring, director at the Walkerton Nutrition Site REAL Sers ices, has retired. In a program Fridas in which Mrs. Kring was honored with a "This Is Your Life." numerous volunteers lauded this vivacious woman as kind, con sideraic. and always dedicated to her goals. It cannot be said she was surprised, because when Marts Malsiaff. mistress of ceremonies, said, "and This Is Your Live, Isa Knng.' Isa said, "I knew it, I knew it." She explained later that one volunteer had told her earlier in the week she'd hase to think of something nice to sav about her Endas. And then when there were some 5” reservations to call in the das before, "she knew something ssas going to happen." Mans had begun the program sasing she'd like to tell a story before thes began the usual group singing and began to unveil a character who alwavs had a smile and was so good and kind to her neighbor. That she had lived the past 45 scars just cast of town on Spruce Road and had three daughters. 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. So with a big grin Is a greeted her famils who rushed out to greet her including a daughter. Janet Lauderback, three granddaughters. Mars Htxwcr. Kristin Kuhan and Danns Moslcs After Marts pinned a corsage from the croup on Isa’s shoulder, it was a s'ring of accolades from all the mans volunteers at the nutri tion site. Ruth Ellers brought forward a beautifully decorated cake embellished with. "This Is Your life. Iva" and later cut and served the cake for all the crowd. Marie Kerchacrt spoke as one of the three women with Jane Chap man and Iris who instigated the RF Al Nutrition Site tn Walkerton through Dr Larrs VanderVeldc at the Walkerton Medical Clinic. Bill Essex To Speak On Drug Prevention s -N jjk \ V. mb WB On April 11th and 12th, Bill Essex will speak to all students in the John Glenn School Corporation on drug prevention Bill will begin his tour at North Liberty Elementary on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. That afternoon. Bill will meet with students from Walkerton Elementary from 12:50 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. On Thursday at 9:00 a.m.. Bill will be at Urey Middle School, the high school at 1:00 p m., and complete his lour that evening at TOO p.m in the high school auditorium when Bill will have a special presentation for all parents. Our speaker is a retired undercover narcotics agent. During his career in law enforcement, he saw manv tragedies caused bv the use of drugs. He began to realize toward the end of his career that the enforcement of drug law violations is very important, but not the solution to curbing the use of drugs. Quality prevention education is. Upon his retirement, he founded a not-for-profit organization and began traveling throughout the nation with the drug prevention programs he developed. These programs have received wide acclaim. the future of our youth is his primary concern. Stahlv. Hazel and Harold Schweder for Mondays. Jim Thibodeaux was not present because of an emergency. Wednesday hostesses include Marx Hahn and Vervl Wathen, and on Thursday. Fred and Opal Bullinger and on Fridav. Verice Walz. Fred was lauded for bringing in his homemade raisin bread each week and Verice with two other registered nurses to give free blood pressure testing for the seniors. Also present was Joe Grzegonek. S'. Joseph Counts Coordinator, who spoke to the group, adding his praise for Iva's work and congratulated Betts Clapper as she begins her career as site director Betts was thanked for making the beautiful Faster decorations on each of the tables. In conclusion, the group sang. Happs Retirement To You. Isa" and Mars Hahn offered praver A beef stew dinner with salad and cake was served each guest. Mars ( able presented the honor cd guest a gift of money and a potpourri basket from the group. Flowers were given from the famils members.

Registration At St. Patrick’S Wed., April 11 Registration for fall kindergarten classes at St. Patrick Schixvl will take place on Wednesday, April 11. between 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.. in the kindergarten building on Tvlcr Street. Children coming to kindergarten in fall must be 5 years old before July 1. Parents should present a birth certificate at the time of registration. Parents max pick up health forms and pax the book fee of $45.00 at the time of registration. Registration for new children in grades 1 -6 will take place April 11. from 1:00 to 3:00 p in., in the schixd office. Uniforms can be ordered at this same time. The bix>k fee of $60.00 can be paid at the time of registration. Registration of children presentl\ attending St. Patrick School will take place April 2-6. Uniforms can be ordered this week between 12:30 and 3:00 p.m. ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING There will be a communitv meeting on Monday, April 16, at ’ (X) p.m , for persons interested in supporting the reinstatement of Richard Kickbush, as a teacher in the John Glenn Schtxd Corporation. This meeting will be held at Stuntz A H<xhstetler Pines. The purpose of this meeting is an organizational meeting. A discussion will be held and committees will be set up at this time. Mark vour calendar now and plan to attend this important meeting. The bake sale held this past Saturday netted s4’’B.oo. The "Kicker Can Campaign" collected $223.00 the past two weeks We would like to thank all the persons in the community who supported these efforts and helped to make them a success. Marsha's Petals, Plants and Potpourri donated a beautiful silk floral arrangement and chances were sold at the bake sale. A drawing was held at the close of the bake sale and Carol Aitken won the arrangement. MAUNDY THURSDAY SERVICE A special drama commemorating the Disciple's last supper with Jesus and the institution of Holx Communion will be presented at the "30 p.m Maundx Thursdav Service on April 12. at the Walker ton Presbyterian Church. EASTER EGG HUNT SET IN WALKERTON The annual Faster Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Walkerton Vol. Fire Dept., will be held on Saturday. Kicker's Drive-In will be sponsor ing a non profit communitv recycling project in cooperation with a hxal recycling center and Walker ton Ambulance Service. We are urging all business, organizations and individuals to assist us in this timely and worthwhile cause bv dropping off all recyclable materials in the proper containers behind Kicker's Drive-In. during the davlight hours only, please. Material to be collected must be clean and includes aluminum cans and scrap glass, separated bv color and unbroken (caps removed); newsprint; computer print; cardboard; gnxerv bags (paper only); blown plastic containers; two liter bottles; milk jugs (caps removed); grass clippings and leaves (bagged please).
