JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD (continued from Page 1) scheduled for March 12 and 15. It was finally agreed that it would he appropriate to have an opportunity for the public to express any views they have about the middle school project at this point in time. Jack Jackson spoke to the Board about the loss of the K-6 program at Walkerton Elementary and that it was not in the best interest to bus all of the elementary students. Mr. Jackson commented upon the good job that is done by the teachers and staff of the John Glenn School Corporation. He pointed out the numerous awards and honors that have been achieved during this year, such as the music program at the high school, the Spell Bowl Team, the Geography Bee at the middle school, art awards achieved at the high school level and the general excellence of the program in the school corporation. He concluded by challenging the school corporation to continue the excellence of the programs and to make progress toward new ones. Paul Larsen delivered a letter to the Board from Vicki Larsen concerning the maintaining of an elementary school at North Liberty and Walkerton. In his own comments. Mr. Larsen stated that he does not want to use Urey beyond the next few years since it is not an adequate facility. He expressed concern about the amount of time that children spend on school buses and that this is not constructive time; if the rides are too long, children will be tired before they reach school. He stated that it is clear that our communities are demanding that the elementaries be maintained at North Liberty and Walkerton. He concluded by stating that supported the construction of a middle school to be phased in at the time that the indebtedness of John Glenn High School is paid off. RECOGNITIONS Mrs. Lightfoot of Walkerton Elementary School congratulated Citizens so the Month Crystal Briggs, grade 3; Craig RoggeHulse. grade 6; and Kay Hostetler, grade 6. V.I.P. awards went to Mrs. Campbell, grade 3 teacher and instructional aides Mrs. Haney Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Zartman. She also stated that the P.T.A. had paid $300.00 registration for Jan Hayes to attend the Irlen Clinic in Chicago for training on scotopic sensitivity: $200.00 to the Bowen Center for an excellent in-service provided to all students on how to prevent abuse: paid fees to Madison Center in South Bend for a drug prevention program. "Sonny’s Story", and purchased table games for rainy day recesses. Mrs. Lightfoot stated appreciation to Jim Swan for organizing and coordinating the Science Fair and to Ron Westafer. Jenny Fisher and Laurie Simmons from Ancilla College who served as judges. Science Fair winners are: Billy Joe Stull, Nicholas Robertson. Katie Hostetler. Jason Coffman. Jamie Bolze, Lauren Heemer, Duke Krocker. Stewart Swan, Luke Krocker. Jamie Dolph, Kimberly Vail. Mackenzie Smith. Michelle Dyniewski, Brian Snell, Shawn Newell, Shawn Shepherd. Mike Mitchell, Steven Goss, Jina Robbins. Steve Savoie. Courtney Sellers. David Guseilla and B. J. Morgan. A total of 126 students participated in the Science Fair. Mrs. Lightfoot recognized the students, parents, teachers and P.T.A. for encouraging the use of scientific methods and entrance into the eompetiton. Mrs. Lightfoot also congratulated Scott Hostetler and the Sth Grade Girls Basketball Team for winning the championship at the LaVille Tour-
ney and the 6th grade for going into the championship game in a double overtime win against North Liberty. Mr. Kaufman from North Liberty Elementary School said that at the last meeting the following students who received recognition in the P.T.A. Reflections Program were not reported: Joshua Snyder. Rachel Ling, Rachel Lung, Tracy Limerick and Kelly Tringlc. The judges for the contest were Steve Larson and Susan Groves. The P.T.A. Reflections chairperson is Mrs. Maria Kammerer and special thanks are also in order for Lynette Meet, North Liberty Elementary School art teacher, for her work in this project. P.T.A. Citizenship Contest. "Our Flag", winners are Kara Holmes, Amanda Grenert, Lisa Clingenpeel and Gail Ferency. Thanks went to Darlene Bell for her help and to Vai Clauss as chairpersons for P.T.A. Young People’s Art Contest hosted by the Women's Committee of the Indiana State Symhony Society has selected art work by third grade student Ben Dodge to be among the 100 pictures chosen from the 3,000 entries for the Indianapolis Museum Art Exhibit. These works will be on display in the Gowes Pavilion from March 27 through April 15. ISTEP testing is currently going on. Scores have just been received from the writing portion of this testing which was administered earlier this year and the North Liberty mean scores were in a slightly above to above average range. The World’s Largest Concert will take place on March 8. This is a program televised on Channel 34 each year whereby schools throughout the nation join in singing and music in the schools is promoted. Additionally. Mrs. Van Dyne has prepared tapes containing information about music which are played each morning to all students. This involves a great deal of work and her efforts arc appreciated. The P.T.A. will be hosting the K-3 Talent Show on March 13 and grades 4-6 Talent Show on March 15. Mrs. Hadden is coordinating that program and is to be thanked for her efforts. Also on March 15. Mr. Charles Ray will be the principal at North Liberty Elementary School. Mr. Ray is the Indiana Principal of the Year for 1989. Additionally, the school where he is principal has been recognized as one of the Nation’s Best Schools. Mr. Kaufman reported that he will be going to Mr. Ray's School, Washington Elementary School in Plymouth, on that day. This activity is encouraged by the Indiana Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals. District 111. The North Liberty School Kindergarten Roundup is scheduled for Monday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Students must be five years old by July 1 in order to qualify for the program. At that meeting, parents will pre-enroll their children and the developmental program will be explained in a short meeting. Parents need to bring the child’s birth certificate with them. They also will sign up for a development testing time for their child. North Liberty testing days will be Thursday. April 19 and Friday. April 20. Mr. Reese from Urey Middle School stated that the Science Fair was held on Monday. February 26 with 51 students participating. First place winners were Brent Hostrawser and Steve Snell, both receiving a Minolta 35mm camera. Second place winner was Michelle Rozycki who received a $25.00 gift certificate. The Urey 7thy and Bth Grade Giris Basketball Teams participated in the Urey Tourney. The Bth grade lost in the opening round of play. The 7th grade team won their first game
against Jimtown by scoring 22-21. In the second game against New Prairie, the Urey Lady Falcons lost in overtime. The Urey Middle School Wrestling team has participated in two invitational tourneys recently. On February 24 Urey traveled to Plymouth where Frank Hahn. Gayton Marks and Jeremy Smith received first place rankings. Matt Counts received a third and Chris Sherman. Eryk Bilski and David Wright place fourth. On March 3, the wrestlers were in the LaVille Tourney. Receiving first were Frank Hahn and Chris Sherman. Second place winners were Matt Counts, Gayton Marks and Jeremy Smith. Dan Mark place fourth. The Urey wrestlers now stand 3-2 in dual competition. Mr. Shuler from John Glenn High School reported that the John Glenn High School 1989 Aerial received a superior rating from the Indiana Council on English Teachers. The other three schools being honored were South Bend Adams. Elkhart Memorial and Indianapolis North Central. The John Glenn Jazz Band received a first place rating at Crown Point High School on March 3. 1990 Girls State representative from John Glenn High School will be Gwen Davey. Alternate will be Deanna Ross. The 4th Annual Falcon Follies will be on March 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Judges will be Mark Durocher from U 93. Donna Terrell of WSBT-TV and Rick Florian. John Glenn graduate and member of Whiteheart. NEW BUSINESS 1. Personnel Report: c. Consideration of the Cancellation of the Teaching Contract of Richard A. Kickbush. Mr. Hostetler moved that the Board of School Trustees adopt and make part of the official minutes the attached Findings of Fact. Conclusions of Law and Order which cancel Richard Kickbush’s teaching contract effective immediately. The motion was seconded by Jean Ann Beem and approved by a vote of six to zero. Nilas Miller did not vote because he had not attended the public hearing. After approval of this motion, the Board secretary, Mary Kay Stedman, was directed to read the Findings of Fact, Conclusions of Law and Order. At the conclusion of the reading of the Findings of Fact. Conclusions of Law and Order. Pam Craft moved approval of the minutes of the action to consider the cancellation of the permanent teaching contract of Richard A. Kickbush. This motion was seconded by William Millar and approved by a vote of six to zero. a. Appointments (1) Darwin Davis. Head Custodian. John Glenn High School, effective April 2, 1990. (2) Ryan Minnich. Boys Track. Urey Middle School. Mary Kay Stedman approved the appointment of Darwin Davis as the Head Custodian at John Glenn High School and Ryan Minnich as the Boys Track Coach at UreyMiddle School. This motion was seconded by Pam Craft and approved by a vote of seven to zero. b. Leave Reuest (1) Pam Smereka, Maternity Leave, effective March 26. 1990. Pam Craft moved approval of this leave request which was seconded by William Millar and approved by a vote of seven to zero. 2. John Glenn High School Gym Bleacher Specifications and Bid Advertisement Authorization. Mr. Harvey indicated that an engineer from Interkal had inspected the bleachers at the high school and advised that they should not be used for the remainder of the year. recommenation that a total replacement of the bleachers be undertake. Cost estimates range up to $135,000. He pointed out that only $15,000 existed in an emergency account in the Capital Projects Dund and that the remaining monies would have to be taken from the General Fund. Mr. Barnes had suggested that we take the remaining amount from the buildings and grounds equipment budget and if an additional appropriation is required to support this expenditure that this be done at same time as the Tax Hearings on the 1991 Budget. In response to questions from Board members, Mr. Harvey stated that the recommendation was to develop specifications and to advertise bids for the bleachers. Mr. Harvey stated that he would work with Fanning/ Howey Associates to develop the bid specifications since they were well aware of these state codes and fire requirements. A motion to approve the reaimmendation was made by William Millar and seconded by Donald Ludwig. It was then approved by a vote of seven to zero. 3. Chapter 2 Allocation Application. Mr. Harvey explained that the school corporation had received an allocation from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in the amount of $11,895 for Chapter 2. Shirley Ross headed a committee to determine how this money would be spent. Some of the money will be allocated for materials and equipment and some of it will be used for in-service training programs. Mr. Harvey thanked Shirley for her excellent work in the preparation of the application. Jean Ann Beem moved approval of the application which was seconded by Pam Craft and approved bv a vote of seven to zero. INFORMATION REPORTS 1. Conference and Travel. a. Marilyn Gordon. Cathy VanDuyne, "Indiana Computer Educators Conference." The Board received the information reports on conference and travel. 2. Superintendent's Report. a. Make-up Day. Mr. Harvey stated that it is necessary for the school corporation to make up the school day which was missed on February 15 because of bad weather. A suggestion from the Discussion Committee was that the make-up day be scheduled for Friday. April 27. which had been originally scheduled as an In-Service day. Since most of the staff has aimpleted their in service requirements, it was agreed that the In-Service day would be rescheduled for Tuesday, May 29, for those people who had not aimpleted their requirement.
Mr. Harvey further explained that if additional days are missed and have to be made up, then the recommendation will be to revert to the original calender. This will have the In-Service day on April 27 and the make-up days scheduled after Memorial Day. A motion to approve the scheduling of the make-up day on April 27 was made by Dave Hostetler and seconded by William Millar. The motion was approved bv a vote of seven to zero. NEXT MEETING DATES The March 13, 1990 special session had been cancelled. The next regular meeting of the Board will be on March 27. 1990 at 7:30 p.m. at Urey Middle School. After ainsiderable discussion, the Board indicated that they will attend the PT A meetings scheduled for March 12 at Urey and March 15 at North Liberty to provide an opportunity for some discussion of the middle school project as warranted. The Textbook Adoption Committee. Middle School English, will meet on March 12. 1990 at 4:00 p.m. at Urey Middle School. The Foreign Language Committee will meet on March 14. 1990 at 3:15 p.m. at John Glenn High School. ADJOURNMENT With no further action to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 9:05 p.m. on a motion by Pam Craft, seconded by Jean Ann Beem and approved by a vote of seven to zero. TRI KAPPA NEWS At 7:30 p.m. on March I. 18 members of Epsilon Chi met at the Walkerton United Methodist Church. Joining the group was Province Office. Mrs. Sherill Fujimura. and guest Lynn Overmyer. After the opening song and verse, the minutes were read and treasurer's report was given. Individual committees reported. Coming events for Epsilon Chi are: Fine Arts and Crafts Festival. April 8. 11:00 a m. - 4:00 p.m.. geranium sales, now through May 3: and bake sale, date to be announced. Inspection was then held by Mrs. Fujimura giving her report, asking questions of the group, and leaving all with a special reading of Erma Bom beck. Voting of new members was held after the meeting. Staying with the March/St. Patrick's Day theme, refreshments of pistachio dessert, green mints and green punch were served. Valerie Wade. Ellen Miller and Josie Snell were hostesses for the evening. The next meeting of Epsilon Chi will be Thursday. April 5, with pledging and officer nominations taking place.
