STUDENTS ATTEND RUBE GOLDBERG COMPETITION A visit to Purdue to attend the Rube Goldberg competition, Saturday. February 17, was taken by students Kelly Tingle, Robby Stahly. Ryan Schmeltz and teachers Tim Davis and Kevin Russell from the North Liberty Elementary G/T program, and Tisha Jacobson, Das id Guscilla and teacher Judy New from the Walkerton Elementary G/T program. Ihe Rube Goldberg Machine Contest is open to all students attending Purdue University. Their task was to create a working machine, of Rube Goldberg type contraptions, that places a lid on a regular Ball canning jar so that it will hold water. No human intervention is allowed without penalty. The machine must run one complete cycle, and be completely reset in five minutes. Only two contestants may reset the machine. Each machine is allowed two judged runs. Two former John Glenn students. Todd Henry and David Hille, were involved in the event.

Jhe winning team was “Having a Ball Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Todd Henry is a member and spokesperson for this team and we enjoyed seeing them win the competition. David Hille, a member of Theta Tau Fraternity, welcomed us and is providing our corporation a video of prior conpetitions. Ihe Rube Goldberg Machine Contest originated in 1949, as a competition between Theta Tau Fraternity and Triangle Fraternity. It was held annually until 1956. In 1983. Theta Tau restarted the contest and opened the competition to all Purdue University students. That year the task was to pour water into a drinking cup. Since then the machines have opened cans of cola, placed toothpaste on a toothbrush, cracked open eggs, and placed stamps on envelopes among various other tasks. In its eighth year as an open contest, the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest has seen the w inners of the contest appear on Late Night with David Letterman. The Tonight Show. Purdue and is now being sponsored by other Theta Tau chapters across the country. Purdue will host the national competition in March Everyone enjoyed the variety, and creative approaches employed in accomplishing the task of placing the lid on the Ball jar and they may be trying out some of these methods at home. UREY GIRLS LOSE The Urey Middle School girls eighth grade basketball team suffered its second loss in four outings, falling 34-23 to LaPorte Kesling. on Tuesday. Feb 27. on the local hardwood. The Falcons out hustled and out rebounded the visitors but could not find the mark on their shots as they trailed 8-7 at the end of the first quarter. After jumping to a quick 13-10 advantage in the second quarter the locals went ice cold from the field and were on the short end of the 19-13 halftime score. The Falcons cold shooting continued as they were down 24-16 at the end of three quarters. Joanna Johnson and Christy Werner paced the Falcons with 7 and 6 points, respectively. Dara

Cisney added five followed by Trisha Rough with four and Julie Pashen with one. Heniott, King and Meyers led the winners with 10 points apiece. The reserve Falcons also dropped a hard fought game to Kesling. 29-23. The Falcons led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter and 16-12 at the half. The visitors edged ahead 20-19 at the third quarter and going on to post the victory. Scoring for the Falcons was as follows: Jody Stahly, 6; Dawn Rhodes. 4; Kelly Stedman, 4; Emily Craft, 2; Sadie Pairitz, 2; Beth Claywell. 2; Kelly Jackson, 2 and Laura Bostwich, I. Phelps led the visitors and all scorers with 19. NURSERY SCHOOL REGISTRATION The Walkerton Nursery School is now registering pre-school children for next year. Classes are available for 3 year olds on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. till 11 :30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. till 3:00 p.m. The 3 year old must be 3 bv July I.
